Minor League Discussion

All Star break apparently affected the pitching of all the top Fort Wayne arms, as all of them struggled out of the gate.  You're going to have these blips in performance from pitchers, especially when they may be reaching an innings pitched limit after not pitching much at all in the last couple of years - Haynes and Nett (and also Lowe) would be at the top of that list.

As for Salas, he needs to re-gain his confidence in his swing and not be so passive at the plate.  Takes way too many strikes and that gets him in the hole; I like the fact that he draws walks but he's also striking out a lot more.  Most of his hits are bloops to the OF rather than hard contact like he had last year.  A learning year for him but you can tell the talent is there; I expect a better finish than he's showed so far but it won't push his overall stats to an exciting slash line.  Likewise, Pauley needs to regain his rhythm and swing path; tried to hit HRs early in his demotion and that screwed up his disciplined approach.  He also should improve by the end of the year but not be brought up.

The problem with Mazur is location within the zone.  He's leaving too much ball in hittable areas of the plate.  He has the stuff but need to make his FB location better to make his other pitches better.  Of course El Paso is not the place to evolve as a SP, so its going to be a challenge for him to get better and solidify a place in the big league rotation.  Even though Mazur has better long range potential, Brito has more experience and can probably handle the mental aspect of being a SP in the bigs at this point in time better than Mazur.  So, I also see Brito rounding out the rotation until Musgrove or Darvish comes back.

Looks like some post draft and ACL movement has started. Lamar King is in the Storm lineup at DH. Jared Kollar was promoted to AAA. Henry Baez is headed to AA. Alain Camou was released.

Baez is a legitimate prospect, isn’t he?

Seems to be in the back half of the top 30 on most lists. The thinking seems to be that he'll end up being more of a depth starter or long reliever type. He seems like he's making steady progress. He's definitely got a chance to make it.

Has shown enough with variety of good pitches, command and velocity to protect him on the roster from Rule 5 draft.  Only others I see added to the 40 man are switch hitting C Brandon Valenzuela and LH RP/SP Omar Cruz, both of whom would potentially be free agents after the 2024 season ends.  Padres should have no problem finding 3 open slots for these guys.

Might add Jagger Haynes to protect him from Rule 5  … still only 21 and a LHP with upside.

Could be a lot of 40 man roster room with a number of players who are unlikely to make the 2025 26 man roster and are out of minor league options … or just not real prospects. Do agree the Padres don’t have that many they need to protect.

Haynes injury history and lack of time on the mound made me take him off my list although I agree he has upside.  Better safe than sorry?

That is the way I see it. Don’t expect they will have to worry about a 40 man crunch so space should be available. Actually don’t see a 40 man issue for a few years (and only if some of the better prospects really develop) so should not be an issue to carry Haynes for development … if no development just DFA.

Side note on Haynes … last 10 starts he has carried a 3.17 ERA in 54 innings … 5-6 innings per start average is showing some health with a good ERA. Still some control issues but the BAA is good. If protected … sit in AA next season … actually could be a useful piece late in 2025 and likely 2026 … so not an extreme time to see what they have in Haynes.

Baez with a nice first start in AA.

Ornelas played CF last night.

Salas with a 3-5 day including an opposite field HR and a double.

With all the trades of potential SP over the last few days, who rises to the top of the prospect list?  From the right side, you can look at:  Henry Baez, Isaiah Lowe and Braden Nett as the top 3 in any order, followed by Lizarraga and Bergert with guys like Sam Whiting, Enmanuel Pinales and Miguel Mendez at the next tier.  For dart throws, we could add Humberto Cruz, Manuel Davila and Luis Maracara way down in the rookie leagues and injured pitchers Carson Montgomery, Kannon Kemp and Garrett Hawkins.

From the left side:  Jagger Haynes and then a long way down to Jackson Smeltz (might be RP) and Fernando Sanchez with Zimo Qin, Ibrahyn Jimenez and Pedro Martinez way down in the rookie leagues.  From there, you have recent signees Kash Mayfield and Boston Bateman.   Darkhorse is a guy that's been around awhile, Omar Cruz!

Padres really have some good young RP prospects, headed by Bradgley Rodriguez and Francis Pena.  Since RPs are so volatile, we'll just leave it at that for now.
