Any chance he starts at Lake Elsinore or more likely in Arizona first?
Probably need to see him in the AFL first but he just seems like a guy who could add 20 lbs and 5-6 MPH as he matures.
He turns 19 in a bout 3 weeks.
Are you hoping that Dickerson turns into the next Joey Cantillo? Me too! Cantillo actually used to throw a little slower than Cantillo did when we got him. Now he throws 92-95, topping out at 98 with a plus changeup. Dare to dream, right? It sure would be nice to have Cantillo right now, but I digress.
I am looking forward to seeing what Kolek and Reynolds can do for our bullpen this year. Hopefully one of them or Jacob can turn into a quality relief weapon for us. The Kolek and Reynolds could have the stuff to become setup relievers or closers. I am not so excited about Jacob, but he could be solid. He looks like a cross between Nabil Crismatt and a right-handed Tim Hill, extremely low release point with tremendous movement and below average velocity.
Maybe Jacob is more Cimber or Yardley ... if you remember them.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 19, 2023, 12:05 pmJacob is just plain weird in arm slot and delivery. Kind of guy you put in after throwing out traditional heat to get guys who likely have never seen anything like him. Cimber's had a good career with similar stuff.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 20, 2023, 7:58 amReported that Padres released 10 minor leaguers on 12/18, including Michel Baez and Jorge Ona. Signing very young international players is a lot of swing and miss and those two had many injuries that may or may not have ended their major league hopes. Padres signed a whopping 51 international free agents from January 15 - December 15 2023 to stock their two Dominican Summer League teams - maybe we'll get lucky with one or two of them (of course Salas was the crown jewel of this group and didn't even go to the Dominican).

Quote from Randy Manese on January 15, 2024, 5:59 pmWhat I like about De Vries is not only is he a superior baseball player but he was also a star point guard, albeit not at the highest levels. Nonetheless, point guard skills have some carryover to baseball in that point guards usually have excellent hands and quick feet. They also have good anticipation and awareness to spot potential open shooters or to take the shot themselves. As you may recall, the Padres signed a highly skilled point guard out of San Diego State several years ago - turned out to be a pretty good baseball player!

Quote from Randy Manese on January 17, 2024, 8:37 amPadres tie for most prospects on Baseball America's Top 100 with 6, 3 positional players (Salas, Merrill, DeVries) and 3 pitchers (Snelling, Lesko, Thorpe). Just missed with 3 more, Zavala, Iriarte and Dillon Head and had 3 more on the Top 100 that we traded away (Wood, Caissie, Gasser).
I personally like Zavala better than Caissie and Iriarte better than Gasser on pure overall talent. Zavala finished the Lake Elsinore season very well after a very very slow start; he did not fare well at Ft. Wayne but it was later revealed he had an oblique injury which greatly affects a hitter's swing - so I give him a mulligan at High A. Look for Zavala to show very well again in 2024, remembering that he will only be 19 for the first half of the season. Regarding Iriarte, what holds him back is his lack of consistent control, otherwise, the quality of his pitches are better than Gasser, who is very steady and consistent; to me, Gasser is a slightly more advanced Mazur but has the advantage of being LH. If Niebla can improve Iriarte's control, Padres really have something in Iriarte.

Quote from Randy Manese on January 17, 2024, 7:20 pm3 days into the International Signing period, Baseball America has the Padres already signing 29 players. Haven't seen a massive cut from last years' Dominican Summer League teams but with this new group they are very close to 100 players who either ended the season on one of the 2 Padres DSL rosters or have been signed but yet not assigned to a particular team. I'll do a little more digging.

Quote from fenn68 on January 18, 2024, 12:29 pmMLB Pipeline is running out its Top 10 by position this week … day by day. So far so good for the Padres with the following prospects listed:
RHP: Lesko
LHP: Snelling
C: Salas (#1 prospect)
Top 100 I think comes out next Friday. Until then should be interesting were Merrill, Zavala land for their positions and if they have included DeVries in the rankings. Might not see Zavala as as Top 10 (a lot of OF prospects) but likely on the Top 100 list.
