Quote from fenn68 on June 19, 2023, 12:15 pmOrnelas could be a candidate for promotion to AAA if he stays hot if you combine that with my other observation of a position player shortage in EP … especially in the OF.
Consider he is Rule 5 eligible again the Padres may want to see him in different environment to make a final call on protection.
Padres would have to work out a lot of backfill strategy … the system does not have a ton of OF (ones that are good and deserving promotion at this time) but may force it for Ornelas’ development.
Mid-July may be the time for a couple of moves across the system as the draft delivers some more bodies for the ACL allowing some bump up opportunities (and probably some releases).

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 19, 2023, 12:27 pmOther than Kohlwey I really don't see anyone at EP in the OF that should keep Tirso out.
IMO he should be there now to see what he can do the rest of the way against AAA pitching.
Of course his stats may,or may not tell us anything....but the scouts can see what he's got

Agree … AAA has some more veteran pitchers with ML experience and in general display a strong array of breaking pitches. The development folks can see how a hitter deals pitch by pitch and determine any real weaknesses.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 19, 2023, 2:49 pmI don't remember if it was from Acee or one of the other writers, but there was a note in the UT a while back about Ornelas. It said that they wanted to see him slug more and that they were going to keep him in AA to ensure that any gains he made were legitimate and not a product of the PCL environment.

Does ring a bell but at some point have to make the leap of faith if he continues to hit ... why I think late July might be it (if he is still hitting). 6-8 weeks in a different environment / different quality of pitchers will tell a lot about his level of development. Of course if he slumps again in AA ... all is moot.

Quote from fenn68 on June 21, 2023, 2:30 amIn 2023 the Automated Ball and Strike system is being used in all AAA ballparks as I understand. Pretty sure that affects individual players differently … be it pitchers or hitters.
No big analysis but only observation / speculation … Weathers went down and struggled with walks (and actually hits) and Groome who was effective in 2022 in AAA has blown up with a soaring walk rate. Wonder if Groome who always had some control issues is the victim of a combination of not getting balls called strikes and hitters adapting better and not chasing balls off the plate?
I like the ABS system … but players have to adapt as with all changes … and for some it may cause better success or the opposite. Just speculating but pitchers without control / command may struggle since it is easier for a hitter not to swing at marginal pitches and take a ball than swing and hit a pitch off the plate. On the other hand, pitchers with good control / command (with good stuff) may be rewarded by not being cheated out of called strikes putting the hitter on the defensive.
Just speculation trying to find a cause for the demise of Groome in 2023.

Quote from fenn68 on June 23, 2023, 8:18 amJust an interesting watch but we are only about half way through the season and a combination of roster design and injuries over all the minor league clubs has the OF options scarce ... we should see quite a few INF/C getting some work as OF. For some, that may be a benefit in creating more value via versatility or even a more suitable position. Thinking Pauley here.
EP (3): Kohlway, Azocar, Liberato
SA (2): Johnson, Ornelas, and already mix and match of others
FW (3): Farmer, Marsee, Mears
LE (3): Murphy, Zavala, Vogt
No hot ACL OF that would allow for bump ups ... even if any are ready for bump ups.
Must be a challenge for the minor league management folks to juggle the needs and player development.

My guess they are targeting him to replace Kim in 2025 but at some point (if they choose to extend Kim) can see him shifted to the OF to replace Soto (or Grisham). Did not take Tatis long to adapt … so no hurry to make move and let him focus on the more challenging SS (and his hitting).
Don’t really know what the Padres think of some of the INF prospects as true ML potential but with Machado - Bogaerts - Cronenworth locking up most of the INF for the foreseeable future, might be the time to make a more permanent development shift for a prospect or two. I think of Pauley (who may or not be a real prospect) but as a 3B has zero future and should be priority as an OF conversion. A couple others are hitting (somewhat) as INF and should get their reps going forward in the OF.
I only see in full season ball Zavala and maybe the resurgent Ornelas as legit OF prospects and clearly LF/CF will have ML needs in the coming years … might get lucky on a long shot but help the odds and shoot for more options if they can.
