The comments on Robbie Snelling on the other forum made me think about when (if) the Padres sound make some mid-season promotions of some of their top performers … mainly pitchers who have been excelling in A/A+.

The development folks will assess the specific issues with each pitcher beyond their stats (and we fans tend to be too aggressive) but … especially with the college types … are making a case to be exposed to a bigger challenge.

Mazur / Bergert to AA? Korb / Snelling to A+? Would like to see one or two be set up to impact the ML in 2026 (two more MiL seasons) given at that point only Musgrove and Darvish will remain and not expecting much coming out of AAA/AA (maybe Wolf at 5 or 6.

I get that the Padres coaches and scouts don't judge a pitcher based on stats at El Paso.

They are watching every pitch of their career and know what to look for.

But that doesn't mean it doesn't get into "the players" head or hurt that players value to other teams when a can O' corn turns in to a 3 run bomb.

Agree sending prospects as they develop to EP does more to retard their development than help it ... at least as a general rule. Danger of pitchers altering  their approach and get away from what made them successful so far.

However, do need pitchers in EP and at some point some of the "prospects" have done their time in SA and need to make room for the next wave of prospects moving up. Other than Wolf ... not a real issue for the Padres in 2023 who really don't have any compelling SP prospects in AA. So, for me, not an issue if they moved up Mazur or Bergert and send a current SA starter to the pen, to AAA, or released. Those two arms have the better upside and take development priority.

Dahl cleared waivers and elected FA.

After an "optimistic" ST ... had nothing going for him in EP ... Kohlway, Tucker, Liberato, and Azocar out played him.

A night to forget for all the minor league team bullpens with the exception of San Antonio.  You expect to win if you score 9 or more runs, but it didn't happen for Fort Wayne, El Paso, Lake Elsinore or the ACL Padres.  Teams also played some shaky defense but some nights, seems like everything you throw gets smacked.  Further, in the ACL game, Lamar King showed that he has a long way to go in becoming a good catcher with 2 PB and 2 throwing errors; in 2 games catching he has a total of 3 PB (Salas has 1 in 3 games) and 4 errors (Salas has zero).  King (probably aided by his pitchers not doing a good job of holding runners on) has 8 SB against him while Salas has thrown out 1 runner and allowed 3 SB.

Dominican teams generally doing okay but lots of growing pains.  Looks like a few interesting hitters are emerging but need longer looks - maybe by 3rd week we'll have a better idea of what's real at this rookie level.

Something has to be done with Groome ... maybe for his own mental well being.

He was bashed again yesterday and is now the worst SP in the PCL ... and that is saying a lot. He has started 13 games (57 innings) ... so no small sample size ... with an ugly 9.43 ERA / 2.21 WHIP, .336 BAA, and 46 BB in the 57 innings.

Only 24 ... reasonably successful in previous seasons ... so should at least try to salvage his career ... but can't see sending him out to get pounded in the PCL being the best plan.

Maybe he needs a break in AZ (phantom IL) to work on his delivery / approach and reemerge in a couple of weeks  in a more favorable environment like SA?

Padres will have some 60 day IL types coming back to the 40 man (Rosario, Suarez, Campusano) ... likely in the next month. Add the potential need to make a non--roster add and/or a trade deadline move will force some DFA of existing 40 man players.

Don't see that as a major issue given the fringe prospects on the 40 man ... but the choices may be interesting. Padres have quite a number of pitchers in the minors who cannot be optioned next season ... Groome, Knehr, Avila, Castillo and considering Crismatt, Tapia, and Honeywell also cannot be optioned in 2024 ... might put Groome at immediate risk of DFA.

Looks at though ... under the new international rules with pool money limits ... Preller is going with identify the kid who they see as the elite of the crop and pay the mega money for the one player then fill around him with volume of longer shot developmental prospects. History does show a lot of "lower cost" international signings developing into quality prospects.

Some teams don't like the "all the eggs in one basket" approach and try to sign multiple "next tier down"  prospects and bet at least one (but hopefully more) blossom into big prospects.

When signing 16-17 year olds ... it is as much luck as it is good scouting.

So confusing in the ACL we have 2 guys with last name Saranbia ... one is Romero(18th rd Drafted) a C the other is Jose an OF (Intl signing)

I'm not sure if Preller has officially changed course and will now throw all his money on a top prospect vice spread it around.  I think it is more like if they have THE top or next to the top player "under contract", then that's the way they'll go.  However, in 2021 and 2022, they spread out the money among multiple players, several of whom are emerging as solid prospects.   Rolling the dice on 16 to 17 year olds is not a bad strategy, however, because post-2016 penalty signings they were able to get Brandon Valenzuela, Jairo Iriarte and Albert Fabian for $300,000 or less.  Good scouting is the key plus a little luck!

Getting close to game action

Wonder if he starts at LE or higher since he was supposedly more advanced than Snelling on draft day
