Here's a stat you won't see often - 7 walks and 7 wild pitches by DSL Padres Brown pitcher Angel Sanchez in 2+ innings of work - the + is because he couldn't get any outs in the 3rd inning.  Lot of these Padres vs. Padres matches on the schedule on the DSL.  By the way, he gave up no hits and struck out 3 during his time on the mound.

Nice pitching by Mazur and Kollar at Ft. Wayne, each throwing over 68% of their pitches for strikes; however, Wolf was even better, throwing over 75% of his pitches for strikes.  Jagger Haynes off to a good start in Lake Elsinore game - we'll see how the night goes.  What about El Paso?  It is El Paso, right?  Turned out Haynes did very well.  El Paso lost in extras.  Do you move Wolf up to El Paso?

Front office has to be debating the plus/minus of moving Wolf up toe EP … and when.

What will help his development more … continuing to refine his stuff under the SA coaching while having success or move to EP and learn by facing the adversity of the PCL?

Just can’t tell where the Padres see him in his development … stats may not tell the entire story. I guess I would keep him in SA since as a pitcher the ability to jump from AA to the ML is “easier” if they have the stuff and they control the game as hitters have to react to them. Might do a late season move up (August?) as a test but a strong season in SA still could put him in the ML mix for 2024.

I watched his game in San Antonio when he recorded his most K's in a game (10) in only 5 innings.  Wolf doesn't have great velocity, so he needs to have his breaking pitches working and good command of his FB (tops out in the mid-90's).  His delivery makes the FB seem faster because he throws a lot of slower stuff; when he hides the ball well and uncoils towards the plate, he is most effective.  I'm tending to agree to keep him in San Antonio because breaking pitches don't work as well in the elevation of El Paso.  Moreover, I'd like to see him lengthen his stride a little more and see if that has any beneficial effects on his FB and learn to hide the ball equally well against LH batters.  Wolf currently fits the image of the crafty lefty and can be a bottom of the rotation starter if he can keep filling up the zone and not leave too many pitches over the plate because those will get taken a long way, as I witnessed in San Antonio.  I can see a late season move to El Paso unless this overachieving team in San Antonio makes the playoffs and the Padres want to see him pitch in that kind of pressure situation.

I almost prefer for SDP to use AA as the springboard to MLB.. especially for P.. Ala Paddack/Weathers when 1st called up.. EP just silly... but maybe BP arms..and Vet depth like we have at AAA.. SP AA and then SD.. Position players either way ok.. EP could boost a kids confidence on his way to SD.. from the hitting side.. but ok with the AA to SD jump Ala Tatis/CJ..

Wound not be surprised to see Wolf end up as a RP (a la Tim Hill). Lower velocity and funky delivery but decent control might be more effective in short views by hitters rather than multiple times through the order as a SP. However, would not rule out a #5/6 SP if he ends up with command of all his pitches.

My opinion on this is well known....but just to spell it out,if the Padres see a starting prospect as a possible mainstay in the major league rotation he should never see El Paso unless on vacation.

The difference between the ridiculous stats in EP for pitchers versus hitters is that for hitters at least it's a positive.

It could be a confidence builder....it may even help them hook on with another team if let go by the Padres.

The opposite is true for pitchers.

The comments on Robbie Snelling on the other forum made me think about when (if) the Padres sound make some mid-season promotions of some of their top performers … mainly pitchers who have been excelling in A/A+.

The development folks will assess the specific issues with each pitcher beyond their stats (and we fans tend to be too aggressive) but … especially with the college types … are making a case to be exposed to a bigger challenge.

Mazur / Bergert to AA? Korb / Snelling to A+? Would like to see one or two be set up to impact the ML in 2026 (two more MiL seasons) given at that point only Musgrove and Darvish will remain and not expecting much coming out of AAA/AA (maybe Wolf at 5 or 6.

If Chris Young + Tim Hill + Quantrill were spliced (like a hybrid apple tree) they would = WOLF..

Just projecting where he fits in.. down the line if not traded..

#5-#6 SP.. maybe a hybrid role a la Nick Martinez.. he has very good whiff rates so could have a Tim Hill type role as well..

With Joe + Yu here through 27-28... and future arms like Snelling/Mazur/Lesko + what I am assuming will be at least a +1 TOR SP add in the offseason (or trade) there may only be 1 or 2 SP spots open in 24-25-26.. so Wolf's best shot to be a SDP SP might be getting to SD at some point in 2024.. and doing well when called upon to P..

Cosgrove is doing that just now and looks like a fixture in our BP for yrs to come

Wilson did that last yr..

To an extend Honeywell (injuries be damned) is on his rookie yr and at least carving himself a nice BP role as well.. I still think SDP might stretch him for 2024.. or just keep him in the BP..

That's 3 high leverage (getting some of these opportunities early and often now) cheap controllable arms.. add to a healthy Suarez/an Option pick up for Nick and Tim Hill (cheap and arb 3).. and the 2024 BP has very little room (pending health) in it with Morejon and others (Wolf?) pushing for MLB innings.. as we currently stand only guy I can see us sending down in favor of Garcia is Carlton.. Tapia has been super solid and can't see him optioned in favor of Cristmatt or Morejon atm To be 100%..

Sorry I morphed 24 into current state of affairs (2023) to end the post 😆 🤣 😂

I get that the Padres coaches and scouts don't judge a pitcher based on stats at El Paso.

They are watching every pitch of their career and know what to look for.

But that doesn't mean it doesn't get into "the players" head or hurt that players value to other teams when a can O' corn turns in to a 3 run bomb.
