With those trades we have the starting rotation of Darvish-Musgrove-Manaea-Snell-Clevinger which has got to be one of the best quality and depth-wise in the majors.  We have our closer, one of the best in the majors in Hader.

We have an all-star 2b, a gold glove CF, a 1b/dh and an ultra-utility guy who are both having possibly their best overall years in the majors and a generational talent in Soto.

66 players are a lot to give up but you don't know what other teams were offering.  There were many times we thought trades were imminent only to have other teams, like the Dodgers, pull the rug  out from under us.  The only other glitch was the failed trade with Miami in which we had Luis Castillo but lost him due to Miami's whining.  That, plus Hosmer agreeing to the trade, would have saved us a free prospects over the course of time.

My only true regret in all those trades was the Nola trade with Seattle BUT you have to realize we were desperate for a C and some experienced RP to get us to the playoffs.  Seattle, however, really has a GREAT GM, so kudos to him for pulling off those trades and besting Preller in all of them.  Certainly, I like many of the prospects given but for small revenue teams that window to win the World Series is only open for a small period of time before another down cycle begins.  Hopefully, we'll still be very competitive from 2024 and beyond.

💯

A point no one mentions when referring to the Seattle trade for Nola.

A Catcher isn’t  just about his offense or his defense. He’s also valued for his calling of the game.

Am I the only one that saw the Musgrove interview when he was asked about the reasons he loves playing for the Padres?

Obviously he mentions the hometown childhood fan part….then he mentioned the current coaching staff and Austin Nola.

He credits Nola with his improvements over the last two seasons.Nola always catches his starts.

That matters too.

Also, sometimes it’s better to trade a player too soon rather than too late.Or in Frances’ case,to give him an opportunity. He wouldn’t have gotten any playing time for us in 2021 and would have only been the DH if still here this year.

Plus real GM’s don’t get to use hindsight….I bet if AJ knew Nola would only be a below average offensive player he wouldn’t have done it.

Something that we now know.

Not saying it was not a good deal at the time.  In fact, Nola was hitting very well when we acquired him.  I much prefer him to Hedges or Mejia or Torres and today's 3 for 3 shows he is a much better hitter than he has shown this year.

So far Doersching is 2 for 2 - a single to CF in the 1st and a single to RF in the 3rd.

Where is he playing?

You can't put any stock into what teammates say about catchers. The stats tell a more complete story. The last time the Padres listened to teammates about a catcher we traded away a young future All Star catcher whose framing was great and ERA2 was a run lower than the other guys.

Nola was involved in talks at this deadline (Passan, Onley, Kurkijan post deadline pod)  He's extremely bad defensively. His framing is 57/60. His arm is one of the worst in the league. We acquired a 3rd catcher.

Real GM's have to consider all factors. There was already a really solid case against Nola at the time of his acquisition. Manfred balls weren't an unknown, we got him a year and a half into them.  You have to calculate the potential drop in output for a return to normalcy. He was old at 29 when catchers decline post 30 and a first year catcher completely untested for the wear and tear over a full season. To call those red flags isn't fair to typical red flags, those are fireworks.

Doersching in the Arizona Complex League.  He struck out in his other AB.

Also,  to comment on the 66 players traded, BA erroneously listed Franmil Reyes as traded after the Luis Urias trade on November 27, 2019.  That is inaccurate.  Franmil was actually traded on July 31, 2019 with LHP Logan Allen, 3b Victor Nova for arguably the #1 rated CF prospect at the time, Taylor Trammell, who unfortunately was very over-rated.    Franmil was recently sent down to the minors by the Guardians and may be non-tendered for a cheaper, more consistent and more flexible offensive player.  Strictly a DH - similar to Voit but lower OBP.

I'm not saying you don't trade him if you can improve or what the players think means more than stats, just that what the pitchers think of them in calling a game matters.

No one prompted Musgrove to mention Nola....yet he did anyway.

He must legitimately feel he's been a part of his success.
