Melvin a few days ago said it may take Myers a bit longer to get his timing down and test his knee maybe in the field … basically they will go slow.
Since the All-Star break is also down time in the minors …not sure the plan except maybe for “extra work” in SD.
I would guess right after the All-Star break … also buys some time to shuffle the 26 man / 40 man roster to make room.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 15, 2022, 9:10 pmSo Kervin Pichardo at 3b in AAA.
He’s only 20 years old and was just in Low A hitting .182/.292/.304?
Why not the 27 year old Hollis who is raking in AA?
Any idea what that’s all about?

Usually it is because the vacancy is viewed as a short term fill in and prefer to disrupt a “non-prospect” by moving him rather than a better prospect. Letting the better prospect stay on his development path.

Quote from fenn68 on July 16, 2022, 4:03 amWith the draft SUN-TUE and I think all the minors in break MON-THUR … might this be the time some of the better prospects get promoted?
Padres over the next couple of weeks will have to absorb the new adds (draft / NDFA) within the minor league player limit … players will be released … so a shuffle of rosters (to a small degree) seems inevitable and next week offers a window to get a player moved and settled prior to the final two months.
No idea where the organization sees the better prospects in their development plan but should we expect movement with Hassell? Gasser? Hollis? Ornelas? Others?
Don’t expect wholesale movement but a few should be at least considered.

Quote from fenn68 on July 16, 2022, 5:24 pmDon’t know much about him but maybe a prospect to watch is Albert Fabian currently in LE.
He is only 20, LHH OF. He has had 205 AB with a slash line of 288/368/517 (885 OPS) with 10 HR. Plus his Jun/Jul has been better than his May … over .300 BA.
Not bad for a 20 year old without much professional work before 2022 although signed in 2018. Maybe an illusion in low A … but worth keeping tab on.

Alek Jacob. The right-handed reliever drafted out of Gonzaga in the 16th round of 2021 is the first player from that draft to reach Triple-A. He began the season at Ft. Wayne where he allowed only four baserunners in 9 innings, striking out 16. He moved on to San Antonio, where he pitched in 17 games and posted a 1.40 ERA with 32Ks in 25.2 innings. Then on to El Paso two weeks ago, where he's been unscored upon in four games, striking out 3.
His cumulative season: 5-0 0.92 ERA 38.1IP 25H 5R 4ER 2BB 51Ks. That's right. Two walks, 51 strikeouts.
Average fastball velocity: 85 mph (more or less). Sometimes a little less. Jacob's slinging, deceptive delivery and dead-fish changeup that dives in two directions make his fastball appear supercharged. This confounds hitters, who often look embarrassingly bad, like trying to swat flies.
Remember that every time you see someone barrel up on one of Luis Garcia's 99-mph straight arrows

Quote from fenn68 on July 20, 2022, 4:00 pmPadres drafted 21 and so far have signed 7 NDFA (that have been reported) … so potentially +28 adds under a domestic limit of 180.
Some of the existing will get released … some maybe back to the DSL
However, not really clear on the ins and outs but for some of the draftees can be signed to a “futures contract” for 2023 and not get counted (and not play) in 2022. However, they can still participate in winter instructs. That could save some of the existing players and give them a couple more months to earn a 2023 return.
For the draftees, some may have minor injuries … some may just be not ready to play much as some may not have played for months … so maybe for those 1 1/2 months just get oriented to the organization, work on some development objectives, get ready for fall instructs. Probably a player by player decision.
Plus they do need to field an ACL team in the heat of AZ and don’t want to destroy the limited players on hand … so some will be activated on the ACL roster.

Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2022, 5:30 pmPadres made an interesting minor league signing out of independent ball … Wyatt Ulrich a 25 year old LHH OF … signed him yesterday and starting him today in San Antonio. First taste of minor league ball.
He is from International Falls, MN (usually the coldest spot in the US during the winter) … originally went to St John’s … not the big one but the small one in MN .. graduated and went on to Richmond for one season as a grad student. Then off to Indy Ball for a couple of years.
Yes, a real long shot but he has hit everywhere (albeit against minimal competition) and plays all three OF slots … not a power guy … not a big guy.
No illusion that he will become a top prospect … but if nothing else a good story to follow.
