Quote from WindsorUK on August 1, 2021, 2:43 pmCan't wait to see Morejon, Baez, and Castillo back. All 3 are legitimate big league roster guys( with Morejon possibly mid rotation?)
And even if Martinez is a back of the rotation piece, we just need guys who can take the ball every 5th day and keep us in the game until the 5th or 6th.
As for the bats, we have plenty of O at the big league level for now( they just need to pull their fingers out their backsides!) and for the next 3 or 4 years( Tatis, Machado, Cronenworth, Grisham.....)
Maybe Preller will surprise us with another big spend on the international market soon?

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 4, 2021, 3:48 amEuribiel Angeles now has 97 hits in 68 games…..and he just turned 17 a couple months ago!
.406 OBP with 15 steals.
Does he finish the season in High A?
Oops....I mean 19 yrs old obviously

Quote from WindsorUK on August 4, 2021, 8:23 pmJoshua Mears is really coming on!
Is he athletic enough to play in the OF or is it time he finds himself a new home at 1B?
Are there currently ANY 1B prospects in our system? If Josh is it, he'll be ready to take over when Hosmer is at the end of his deal, right?

Quote from Randy Manese on August 5, 2021, 11:34 amDearth of prospects at 1b for the Padres in the minors. Best options are already on the roster with Cronenworth and Nola possibly sharing the position post Hosmer. Regarding Mears, don't think he has ever played 1b and Padres probably want him to concentrate on pitch recognition to get his K rate below 30%. If he can do that, becomes a huge prospect given his awesome power when he connects. Not everyone can make that switch to 1b, digging out balls and making stretches from errant INF throws, hard hit balls at him and down the line, and the required accurate throws from the position. Mears has a good arm and takes decent routes in RF, so I'd probably keep him there and try to maximize his offensive production. Doing well at Lake Elsinore to raise his batting average to the 260-270 range given OPS of over 900.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 5, 2021, 12:01 pmEncourage Padres' fans in San Diego and nearby locations to take that short drive to Lake Elsinore to see some of their best lower level prospects in the minors. Hassell, Angeles, Mears and Valenzuela are all in line for promotions and Solarte and Dale have shown growth this season. Unfortunately, the pitching at LE is nowhere as good, but enjoy the offense!

Quote from fenn68 on August 7, 2021, 3:59 pmJust a one off comment on the projected value of Campusano going up … because he can hit and some of his defensive shortcomings will be lessened by the coming electronic strike zone.
Never considered that.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 7, 2021, 4:51 pmGood point with the electronic strike zone. Definitely take away some of his receiving inabilities.
I'm happy with Nola and Caratini at the moment. They'll be here next year as well so Luis has plenty of time to work on his D, and let it catch up with his O.

Quote from fenn68 on August 7, 2021, 5:11 pmWith Caratini back for 2022 and 2023 …. Nola around for 4-5 more years … and it appears that the Padres really like them both for their catching first abilities …going to be interesting the handling of Campusano.
If the DH arrives … he might be on the 26 man as a back-up C, part time DH based on his bat plus, as needed, allows Nola to get some 1B time to spell Hosmer (if still around).
Padres may actually need Campusano’s bat in 2022 given the alternatives in house.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 8, 2021, 11:51 amWood put on the golden sombrero in the ACL last night striking out 4 times in a 7 inning game. Was off to a solid start but this game shows he still has a long way to go before he becomes relevant. Former Padres are carrying the Cubs ACL team and I think we all knew they would. Again, a long way to the majors for those at the lowest level of minor league play outside of the Dominican.
