Minor League Discussion

MLBPipeline now has officially removed Marcano (#5) from the Top 30 and added:

Ethan Elliott (LHP) directly to #12 after not being on the list. Recognizing a good 2021 coming out of nowhere ... that is good. If you are a pessimistic ... what does that say about the prospects at #13 and down getting bypassed by Elliott.

Brett Kennedy has been activated off the IL and assigned to AA. Scheduled to start.

With the recent trades of 3 prospects off the MLBPipeline Top 30 … they have added

#10 Ethan Elliott … LHP … (dominated A+ and now in AA) in first full season ball and an older college type (small school)

#11 Euribiel Angeles … INF … (dominating low A as a 19 year old and, I think, the youngest in the league).

#30 Esteury Ruiz … OF … (return to the list now in AA and converted to the OF … was a poor defensive INF but speed and a quick bat .. so OF may be some hope).

Where does Allen Cordoba in our ranking of prospects? Must be in the top 20?

Can anyone figure out moving on from Espinoza, after all he's gone through? And for a two month rental on a back up OF?

How is Marisnick better( or different?) from O'Grady?

Preller once again trading just to trade.

We moved on from 3 "prospects" for 2 two month rentals. If they were 2 guys that put us ahead of the Duds, then great. But does anyone feel Hudson and Marisnick(sp?) get us past the Duds?

Just don't see the value of either move.

Technically not a prospect since he spent a year in the ML as a Rule 5.

Always have liked his potential and unfortunately hampered by serious injuries. Still only 25 and doing well in AA … still has upside.

Have to admit I was scratching my head on this one too. All I can guess:

1. Marisnick is a RHH with plus defense in all three OF slots and most likely in and Mateo out. Think O’Grady is out as a LHH, less defense, and less LHH need after adding Frazier.

2. Espinosa is harder (except that is who the Cubs wanted) … he seems to be rebounding in limited innings back in high A … but on the 40 man and only one more minor league option plus always worry about any pitcher with multiple elbow procedures to ultimately survive a full ML workload.

3. Maybe in deciding which prospect goes … using a 40 man roster player that they don’t see has helpful in 2022 works as they look at what may be some difficult 40 man roster calls this winter with a the 60 day IL players coming back and new Rule 5 eligible prospects they may like more. Thompson and Espinosa were on the 40 while Miliano and Suwinski were going to be Rule 5 eligible.

I certainly enjoy seeing new guys brought in, especially if they replace guys who we think are replaceable.

But these huge trades-4 for 1, 5 for 1- just really don't make sense. They deplete your system overnight.

Is it still true that our best prospects are at AA?

Looks like there are quite a few arms( Henry, Hernandez, Bachar) thar are destined for SD.

Who is Adrian Martinez? His numbers look really good . 25 in December. Will he be in big league camp next year? We need all the young controlled starters we can get.

I guess it sort of depends on the reshuffle of “best prospects” after 2021 performance … but I think more potential sits in low A (Valenzuela, Angeles, Hassell, Mears … along with a couple of arms) and in Rookie ball with the new draft class and some new international adds.

AA still has some … like the bat of Rosario as an INF only 21. Martinez had injury issues as I recall but maybe can be a back of the rotation type. Never know on RP and Cordoba is there. Padres promoted Elliott (LHP) recently and he has some potential for the ML. (I am excluding Abrams since he is injured). Basically may be some useful pieces but not seeing a major prospect.

AAA sort of begins and ends with Campusano as a major prospect and High A (FW) really does not have too much (maybe a few arms).

Would expect to begin to see the reloaded farm system from the lower levels impact in 2024-25 with maybe a few arms (RP types) jumping up for 2023.

Hopefully earlier we see the successful returns of Morejon, Baez, and Castillo to support the pitching. However, Padres will need hitters by 2023 and I only see Abrams, Campusano, and Rosario on that track. Outside chance with Hassell. That would be hitting on all … always tough to do.
