Minor League Discussion

As those that may have read my previous posts mentioning Campusano, I'm a big fan of him as a future major leaguer.  I don't think his defense is horrible and it has gotten better over the years.  He'll never measure up to Hedges defensively but will be a far better hitter than Hedges ever had the potential to be.  I'm thinking that a catcher who may be average defensively but hit 275-280 with 10-15 HRs is still a valuable member of a major league lineup, provided he doesn't give up as many runs as he accounts for offensively.  I can see him going behind the plate when Nola goes to 1st base or elsewhere, at DH, and being a good option for a PH off the bench.  He does have a pretty good eye and reasonable K rate which probably translates to a decent OBP.  I think he has a very good chance to stick in 2022 despite having only one year of experience above Hi A in the former California league (where he won the batting title as a catcher!).

For those who look really deep into the Padres' minor league system, their most successful team this year is the Dominican Summer League Padres, who are 15-5 at the 1/3 mark of a 60 game season.  Victor Acosta and Daniel Montesino are the offensive leaders but, at 17 years old, not dominating the league.  What has been surprising is the depth of their overall pitching staff, even though it's hard to evaluate and project future success from such small data sample sizes.  Nonetheless, kudos to 1st year manager Luis Mendez and his staff for bringing a group of relatively unheralded kids together and having them be successful for the first part of the season.  Maybe one or two will eventually make a difference at higher levels in the organization or even the major leagues.  Such a long way to go!

Beginning to look as though 2nd round pick is going to be an “interesting” follow for the next few seasons.

Of to a very good rookie ball season … 8 games (357/419/429) with 5 stolen bases which is impressive for a very large man.

Last night he went 3 for 4 with no strikeouts after a clunker of 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts. Has the swing and miss in his game but still is delivering results.

Both Woods( surprisngly!) and Merrill are off to solid starts. And it looks as if Kopps will most definitely be moving up in the next few weeks.

Class of '21 looking good......so far.

Don't forget River Ryan, the drafted pitcher who has yet to pitch!  Off to a great start as a DH and probably not a premium prospect but got to love the name!

Padres have promoted Martinez from AA to AAA … maybe should have gone directly to SD … at least he has been effective as a SP in AA plus will have to be protected from the Rule 5 this winter.

Beginning to worry about the state of Gore. After this long run in the witness protection program with complete radio silence … ample time for the blister to be a non issue … would have expected a token appearance or two in the AZ Complex to test out his game progress in correcting whatever it is they are correcting … unless it really is an injury?

I don't think I've seen the minors in a worse spot than this season. 1 pop up prospect (Angeles). The entirety of the FW team with basically a sub .700 OPS. No real notable pitching performances from guys who could project.

Agree. Traded almost all the full season talent while trying to replenish with very young prospects.

Padres are going to have to be lucky and have the few better prospects develop and deliver at the ML level as the ML roster controlled pieces start to depart. Might work for the position players … not sure they have the horses to cover the SP.

The high minors were gutted by trades but the very low minors are showing well, especially Lake Elsinore hitters.  While Angeles and Hassell are having outstanding seasons, the guy I like is the young catcher Brandon Valenzuela.  Still not as polished defensively as he could be but has the tools to be very good behind the plate; at the plate, sees a lot of pitches and has gotten a lot stronger as evidenced by an increase in extra-base hits and slugging percentage.  Will probably have to be protected from Rule 5 but worth opening a slot for him since he could jump over Hi A to AA next year.  Our best catching prospect not named Campusano.
