Minor League Discussion

Yeah, the whole "Alternate site" concept just seems more obsolete by the day with where we're at as a country vaccination-wise... it sounds like numerous MLB teams (incl coaches, staff, etc)  are already > 85% vaccinated leading to eased restrictions in clubhouse, etc.

My guess is that they briefly separate / quarantine guys being optioned down b/c they're going from one team of 25 guys to another, so probably have to test negative twice in "x" days or something before mixing with the new group?

Haven't heard a thing about "taxi squad" in a while...  I think there was no need for this when basically the entire AAA team was at the "alternate site" (El Paso).  Pads have been recalling lots of guys, on typically short next day notice.  Maybe the process changes now as the AAA season gets going?  It does seem possible that a small group ("taxi squad") might get held back from the El Paso team when they are on the road; to be the guys available for emergency recalls up?  Maybe even traveling with Pads on road as the "taxi squad".  But you're right that this group would have to rotate, wouldn't want your best players (Campusano) sitting there not playing....

SOMEone must know what's going on... would be nice if it got reported.  Maybe it will in coming days?  The new less travel synched Minors schedules were a good idea & should just continue going forward.

Agree on the new minor league scheduling plan ... 6 game series / 1 travel day.

Good to benefit the minor leaguers to go along with better pay, better food ....

Wonder if MLB might consider some similar construct with longer series ... save a few trips (and therefore some money) ... again better for the players I think. That might allow for more off days and avoid those 17 consecutive game runs. Would be more difficult than in the minors with 15 teams in each league and inter league play plus the current structure of wanting to play everyone in your league and hold to 162 games. Still with some creativity / flexibility could come up with something to benefit the clubs and the players.

Does anyone know when the team(s) in Peoria and the Dominican League will start playing and will there be any box scores available?

Saw something that implied AZ League games would start June 25th (similar to previous years) and DSL a few weeks earlier. At this point not really sure.

Guessing for box scores it will be business as usual on the MiLB website ... they do have an icon (no detail) for the AZ and DS leagues.

The huge change over on the Farm is really evident when scouring the box scores.

So many names missing...so many unfamiliar players.

It doesn't help that we haven't seen any for over a year but what a change over.

I trust AJ will build it back up but that will still take 2-3 years.

It's just now even more important that Gore,Abrams,Campusano and Hassell become solid(or better) major league players.

I would add the development of Marcano and Mears along with Campusano, Abrams, and Hassell for the offense. Might get lucky with someone else developing ... but for now that would be wishful thinking.

Fortunately (assuming they can play to their histories) the current offense will be around for a few years with only Pham on the cusp of departure. So, 2022 still can be development for the kids with 2023 likely the start of a real changeover and more so in 2024.

Pitching is harder to project but has to become more than Gore by 2023-24. Clevinger and Musgrove are FA after 2022 and Darvish, Snell, and Lamet are FA after 2023. So, Weathers and Paddack in 2024 and ???????. However, three minor league seasons can have some arms emerge. One eye on Lawson and Espinosa as rebound from injury candidates with excellent “stuff”. Lange with the big FB. Plus a number of the Latin players that we have yet to see in much (if any) game situations.

I get that we are fine over the next couple seasons...but that assumes health.

Other than Catcher(Campusano) and middle infield(Abrams/Marcano) we're in a bind if anyone else at the major league level gets hurt....and Abrams and Marcano probably aren't ready either.

It's a pretty big drop off to Tanielu,Kivlehan,Florimon and even O'Grady.

I'm just pretty worried considering all the injuries already this year for us....and most other teams as well.

That concern can be held by every team ... a handful of “real” starter prospects and then a bunch of question marks.

Do agree that in 2021 ... none of the prospects would be a desirable replacement for a key injury.

While other teams all have a similar situation we didn't in 2019.

We had so many guys who could have come up and contributed that are now on the Indians,Mariners etc.

Don't take this as complaining....I've always been the one to say trading prospects for proven major leaguers is the way to go,just

pointing out where we are left now.Even I didn't expect Preller to trade as many as he did.

I just hope in a couple years we are back and ready to do it all again with 7 top 100 prospects again.

The only one I really regret is the Franmil trade and he wasn't really a prospect .........man could we use his bat right now.

We all do, but I think it's extremely unlikely.  Not going to be drafting high enough going forward to get "automatic" top 100 types.  Will really have to hit on a guy 15-20 other teams pass on in 1st round.  Better chance with International signings, but only the top 3-4 guys in world each year are going to initially land on top 100 lists.  Would have to spend vast majority of Intl hard cap budget on 1 player to get that "guy"; NOT a great strategy when Intl guys so hard to forecast since they are signed so young.  I do think Preller will try to acquire Intl $ in minor trades since our draft pool $ will be so low this & likely future years, but personally I believe spreading the $ around across more signees is a better strategy.

Kim & Weathers may "graduate" this month, certainly this year.  Morejon "stuck" on the verge of doing so & almost no one will consider him a "prospect" when he returns 2nd 1/2 next year.  Of the remaining 4 guys, only Hassell is 100% certain to still be a prospect next season, & of course he has to prove he deserves the high ranking.  Campusano could graduate depending on performance, but more so injury to top 2 C, Gore is a lock to be added to roster at some point; depends on when, Abrams very likely to "still" be a prospect, but some have speculated he could be a Padre before end of season, so have to think it's possible.

Some of our prospects obviously are going to have good seasons & move up in our system (but also bad or injured = lower), but I'm skeptcial we have any other top 100 MLB prospects lurking in our system even in the next tier of:  Marcano, Lange, Lawson, Mears, etc.

At moment, 3-4 top 100 prospects next season feels most likely, but looks more likely to drop from there (i.e. 2023) than rise.
