Quote from Randy Manese on January 12, 2021, 6:54 pmMad Friars recently ranked their top 30 Padres prospects for 2021. Anybody want to name a position player and starting pitcher outside those 30 that may be considered a sleeper?
I'm going with Eguy Rosario as a guy would could make it all the way to AAA this year for my position player and a pitcher recovering from TJ that hasn't pitched in 2 years, Manuel Partida, a LHP from Mexico who will probably start out in the Arizona Rookie League but could advance to Lake Elsinore if healthy. He's still only 20 years old. Eguy had a very good winter league season and turned 21 in August. Let's revisit this site at the end of the 2021 year and see how we did with our guesses.

Quote from fenn68 on January 12, 2021, 8:47 pmI go with four ... two “older” recovering from injury ... two “younger”:
3B Skender ... likely in A+ career hampered by injury but can hit (in early to mid 20s)
C Fernandez ... likely in A+ ... still only 21ish ... can hit
====
LHP Feole ... college type recovering from TJ (in senior season) ... not big velocity but effective (and highly ranked) out of college ... probably a low A (maybe high A based on “smarts”).
LHP Rascon ... out of HS as an over slot late round signing .... good early readings in 2019 .... maybe returns to Rookie but could jump to low A

Quote from fenn68 on January 12, 2021, 8:51 pmGrant Little sighting .... in Australian Baseball League.
Little has been an underperforming (and oft injured) high pick from a few years ago lurking in the A level out of college.
Just was filling time with a look at the Aussie League and there was Little getting a hit.
Padres usually send a couple of players to Australia for winter ball ... no idea who else is there but, frankly, not much comes from that deployment.

Quote from Brian Connelly on January 13, 2021, 8:53 amThis is geeky, but Grant Little is "infamous" for being the 2018 2nd round Comp pick the Padres obtained in a trade from.... Twins?
.... along with Phil Hughes and his 7+ MM salary. Hughes I think was coming off a major injury, so a "turnaround" flyer.
Preller valued the comp pick & its additional $ added to Padres draft pool THAT high. Then spent the full slot amount on Little at the 74th pick. This meant that the entire premise of using the additional $ to either sign someone over slot, or get more than 1 pick under slot didn't occur, so in essence he spent the regular draft bonus plus 7 MM to draft Little and get I think it was a half season of bad RP from Hughes at the very very end of his career.
Adding insult to injury, Little was not ranked by MLB.com in its top 200 draft prospects, and has done nothing so far in minors career. But must have some ability, so maybe he breaks out this year.
I generally am a big Preller fan, and would give him a career A-/B+ as GM, but this move (so far) was an F-. Little would have to make it to MLB or have some trade value to improve that grade

Quote from Randy Manese on January 15, 2021, 2:39 pmIn the Padres' Prospect Chat on Baseball America, Kyle Glaser indicated that Efrain Contreras had TJ surgery after the instructs in November. Too bad, he was hitting 95 and has a good 3 pitch mix. Possibly see him pitch again in 2022, when he will be 22. Ranked #19 by Mad Friars. Pitching arms are so fragile which is why you need a ton of them.

Quote from fenn68 on January 18, 2021, 2:57 pmBA has it new Top 100 ... Padres have seven (most of any team):
10. Gore
11. Abrams
36. Campusano
76. Morejon
78. Kim
84. Weathers
85. Hassell
Not bad considering all the prospect assets dealt this winter.

Quote from Ben Davey on January 18, 2021, 5:54 pmI was slightly surprised by how low Kim and Morejon ranked (BA only looks at # of innings or at bats to determine prospect eligibility so Morejon doesnt count in some places). I figured both would be around #50-60
Abrams at #11 is fantastic and incredible. If he has a good season in High A/Double-A could be a top 10 prospect in baseball next year.
BA and Pipeline both feel a bit obligated to put top 10 overall draft picks in the top 100, Hassell has a high floor, but a lot to prove before most of us think of him as a real top 100 prospect. There were really good reports on him from the alt camp that he probably showed the most improvement from day 1 until the end.

Quote from Brian Connelly on January 18, 2021, 9:18 pmTo have added Joe Musgrove & still have 7 of the top 85 prospects in MLB is pretty phenomenal! I agree first 6 are all definitely top 100, and that Hassell is more on the fence, but the placement is reasonable based on his draft position.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 19, 2021, 3:39 amPreller opens up a 40 man spot and with the Minor Leagues contracting,is trading multiple prospects for major league pieces rather than just having to release lower level prospects for nothing.
AJ playing Chess while everyone else is playing Checkers.

Quote from hoffy51 on January 19, 2021, 4:18 amNot only that. I think he has created a three year window to rebuild the depth in our minor league system.
