Prospect Watch: Stop me if you have heard this before — Jase Bowen homered. The toosly 25-year-old outfielder clubbed his team-leading fifth home run of the season to lead off the resumption of Saturday’s game with the blast leaving his bat at 108.2 mph. In game two, he went 1-for-3 with a double. Bowen has done two things a lot this season– hit the ball hard and swing and miss. The former 11th-round selection owns a 45.5% hard hit rate, 11.3% barrel rate, and 112.6 max exit velocity, all of which rank in the 84th or percentile or better of Triple-A hitters. At the same time, he’s punched out 27.8% of the time with a 29.5% whiff rate and 34.6% chase rate, all in the bottom third of Triple-A batters. He’s now batting .278/.350/.653 through 80 plate appearances. … The only guy who had a bigger day in game one than Bowen was Jose Miranda, who went 3-for-3 with a homer, double and three RBIs. Miranda owns just a 36.4% Hard Hit rate and 3.0% barrel rate in his first month in the Padres system. He hasn’t played in more than two straight games as he’s gotten off to a slow start. … Yuki Matsui made a relief appearance with the lead in game one. He allowed one run on two hits, walked none, and struck out two. His four-seamer sat in the low-90s and averaged 19.1″ inches of induced vertical break. It was without question his most effective pitch of the night, generating a 75% chase rate and a 28.6% whiff rate. He made three appearances in the series as he ramps up his workload. Expect to see him go in back-to-back games this week. He can remain on his rehab assignment for up to two more weeks. … After an 0-for in game one, Sung-Moon Song rebounded nicely in game two, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Neither single was hit very hard, with exit velocities of 74.9 and 82.1 mph. The organization’s decision to keep Song in Triple-A feels like a smart one. So far this season, he’s yet to log a barrel, has only a 30.8% hard-hit rate, and a well below-average 77.3% in-zone contact rate. … After Alek Jacob delivered a pair of scoreless innings for the Padres, the 27-year-old got sent down to make room for Matt Waldron on the big league roster. In his first appearance after the demotion on Sunday, he allowed his first earned runs of the season, yielding one run on one hit, three walks, and punching out none. Even with the mishaps, his numbers with El Paso have been excellent, as he owns a 47.1% whiff rate, a 45.5% chase rate, and a 1.13 ERA.

Prospect Watch: The Missions struggled to figure out Midland starter Wei-En Lin en route to being shutout 7-0. The loss marked the fourth time in the series that San Antonio failed to score three runs. … Starter Jagger Haynes looked solid early, holding a strong Midland offense to only one run through the first four innings. However, he ran into trouble in the fifth, and was ultimately charged with three more runs to bring his final line four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings, while punching out only one. Haynes generated seven whiffs and a 16.6% whiff rate on the day. … Braedon Karpathios went 1-for-4 with a double in Sunday’s loss. The Missions outfielder has come out of the gates very slowly this season, posting just a 20 wRC+, .197 wOBA, and logging three extra-base hits while striking out a whopping 41.8% of the time. His current 59.1% contact rate is a career low. It’s worth noting that Karpathios had slow starts in both 2024 and 2025, then made good in-season adjustments. Nonetheless, the start to the season has been rough for the former undrafted free agent. … Perhaps the bright spot for the Missions on the afternoon was yet another strong showing from reliever Francis Peña. The right-hander worked a scoreless inning and a third, allowing one walk against two strikeouts. Peña generated two whiffs on nine swings. After a brutal second appearance of the season, Peña has settled back in, working now 4.1 scoreless innings in his last three appearances.

Lamar King Jr. has had more reasons to celebrate this week. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)
Key Stats: RHP Abraham Parra 5 IP, 1 R (0 ER), BB, 3 K; RHP Tucker Musgrove (W, 1-0) IP, 2 ER, 2 H, BB, 2 K; LF Alex McCoy 2-for-5, 2B, R; DH Lamar King Jr. 3-for-5, 2B, RBI, R; RF Kavares Tears 1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI,1 R, 2 BB; CF Jake Cunningham 3-for-5, HR, 2B, RBI, 2 R; 2B Rosman Verdugo 2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R
Prospect Watch: Another day and Alex McCoy turned in another multi-hit performance. The 24-year-old went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored on Sunday, with both knocks logging exit velocities of 110.0 mph. The early numbers are staggering for the Hofstra product, who is posting a 150 wRC+, .443 wOBA, and a .991 OPS in 13 games. Still, it’s fair to ask whether McCoy can sustain his results in the long term with his current approach. The outfielder is very swing happy, posting a 56% swing rate and ,while he’s made a lot of loud contact, he is still posting a 30% whiff rate and walking at just a 4% clip. If he continues to look this comfortable against High-A arms, a much bigger test may arrive sooner rather than later in San Antonio. … Kavares Tears went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two walks in Sunday’s win. Tears’ average through 14 games is a very disappointing .184. However, he’s also posted a .859 OPS and .362 wOBA thanks to a 23.1% walk rate and six of his seven hits going for extra-base hits. While he’s still punching out at a nearly 30% rate, Tears has cut his swinging strike rate by about 4% this season. His .238 BABIP also suggests he’s due for some positive regression. … Lamar King Jr. put together his second three-hit game in his last four starts, going 3-for-5 with a double, RBI, and run scored. After a dreadful first two series of the year, King put forth a much-needed bounce-back series, going 9-for-21 against Lake County that featured his first High-A home run and four total extra base hits. … Abraham Parra gave Fort Wayne a quality start going five innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits, walking one, and striking out three. Parra , 20, generated five whiffs and a 18.5% whiff rate, and now owns a 2.13 ERA through three starts for the TinCaps. … Tucker Musgrove made his second appearance of the week in relief and allowed two runs on a pair of hits and a walk, without striking out a batter. Musgrove only got two whiffs and allowed a homer on a two-strike pitch to Jace LaViolette.

Prospect Watch: Kale Fountain was the only member of the Storm lineup to reach base three times, going 1-for-2 with a single and two walks. Despite some quality contact, it’s been an overall slow start for the Padres’ 2024 fifth-round selection, who is hitting .192 with a .646 OPS and .281 wOBA. While he limited the punch-outs on Sunday, he has 17 of them in his first 13 games played. … Jorge Quintana went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Like Fountain, Quintana has stumbled out of the blocks this season, hitting .170 with just a .242 wOBA, but his two extra base hits this season have come in the last two games. … Ryan Wideman went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored against the Ports to finish a slower overall week for the Padres 2025 2nd round selection as he went 4-for-24 on the week. While it’s early, and a small sample size, Wideman has done a better job of limiting the strikeouts and the swing and miss in his game so far, posting a 10.8% swinging-strike rate and 18.5% K% in 14 games. … Holding a lead in the eighth inning, the Storm handed the ball to righty Sean Barnett. The lively, yet extremely inconsistent arm, put forth one of the better outings of his career, working two thirds of an inning, he allowed a run, yielded one hit, and punched out two. Barnett’s stuff looked good as he recorded four whiffs on eight swings, ending the day with back-to-back swinging strikeouts.
