Ryan Wideman is hitting....I repeat,Ryan Wideman is hitting!!

It seems like a few of the college guys from last year's draft class might be ready for a bigger challenge. Ryan Wideman, Bradley Frye, Justin DeCriscio and Conner Westenburg are all off to strong starts in the Cal league.

Frye and DeCriscio are a little old for the league so might get mid-year promotions if continue to hit.  Core of Wideman, Westenburg, Madonna, Harvey, Verdugo, Fountain and Quintana (even though the latter two are not hitting that well yet) should make this team very competitive in the California League if they just get some pitching.

Team also has a lot of speed and causing havoc on the base paths.  Its a good team to watch if you have a chance to visit Lake Elsinore.

Two of the pitchers I wanted to have really good years are now on the 60 day IL.  Kemp hasn't pitched yet this year but Gutierrez was off to a great start and then had a clunker in his last appearance.  Was it because of injury?  Don't know if Gutierrez could actually move forward as a starter but I believe both he and Jagger Haynes could convert to effective LH relief pitchers since they usually get through a line-up once without much trouble.

Opening of the Arizona Complex League is just around the corner - 2 May.  Guy I want to see is Lan-Hong Su, who is supposed to be advanced for a pitcher at his age.  Unless they bring up some of the stars of the 2025 Dominican Summer League Gold championship team, not a whole lot of prospects currently on the roster to be excited about.  Hope I get unexpectedly surprised.

Lake Elsinore showing its explosiveness on offense this series with Visalia, helped by very sloppy play.  Even without Harvey and Fountain in the line-up because of injury, this team can score a lot of runs in a hurry.  Expect some of the older players to see Ft. Wayne before June.  Harvey should be back soon but Fountain might be out for quite awhile with an injured shoulder.

Many of the core players on the Dominican Summer League Gold championship team were promoted to the ACL, including a couple of surprises - Sebastian Vargas, who didn't play last year and LHP Yunny Tovar, who hadn't pitched since he was signed back in January 2024.  It will be interesting to see how these young players acclimate to stateside baseball and how well or poorly their individual skills carryover.

After a super hot (over 103 every day) ST in Peoria, don't know if I'll make the trip to see this team in Summer but if they start out hot might just drive over for a couple of days.
