You think if Renfroe had stayed in Elsinore for 231 more plate appearances, he would have hit 11 more doubles and not homered at all? Because he and Franmil both had 16 HRs for the Storm.
And what scouts (and we) saw in Renfroe's defense is fantastic athleticism, not elite performance.
Ok.........I chose my words carelessly in my first post when I said Reyes's numbers were better than Renfroe’s.
Still doesn’t change my point that they are a lot closer in production than they have ever been in ranking.
Again....he’s only 22 and tearing up AAA.......but it’s like we can’t talk about it because he was never a highly ranked prospect.
All I did was ask if he keeps this up how high could he move up in the rankings and “tried” to use Renfroe as an example.
Is there a better comp for Reyes over the last 3-5 years in the Padres Org.?

Quote from Cptjack on May 7, 2018, 11:53 pmChad Huffman is probably who you're looking for. Not a toolsy guy, showed some power, could barely crack the top 10. I think we only had 1 top 100 prospect the year he did as well in Headley.
Thing is though we are talking about him. He just hadn't given us much of a reason to prior to the power explosion last year. A .240-.260 20HR guy isn't much to write home about. A .240-.260 30HR guy can make it.

Quote from sportwarrior on May 8, 2018, 1:08 pmThe thing about Franny is that he's only 22. He's always been young for his level and always been one of those "if he can fix this and that, he'd be a good prospect" sort of guys. That begs the question, then, of whether he HAS fixed this and that?
One thing he (and other kids like him) have had issues with is translating his massive raw power into games consistently. That's something he's done pretty well so far. (The only two highlights I've seen of him this year were MASSIVE 430+ foot home runs. In other words, they weren't PCL specials.)
Another has been his patience at the plate and his K%. His strikeouts are shade better, but overall in line with his career norms. His walks are ticking a bit better as well (like 11% compared to 8%), but it's still way too early with way too small a sample size to judge on that. Is there any word on things like his pitches per PA or swing and miss rate? How are his at bats checking out in the general eye test?
I guess my bottom line is that this ISN'T a Dean Anna/John Knott type situation, where ho-hum prospects with marginal athleticism and tools put together solid seasons at older ages. Franny is young for his league and still capable of making the changes needed to get back on the prospect radar. So I ask again... Has he made those changes?

Didn't mean to knock down the question-asking, but I got stuck on the language. Thanks for helping me step back from that to the broader question.
Again, as a guy who consistently was high man on Franmil and had him in my Top 20 going into 2015, 2016 and 2017, I certainly think he's an interesting player - much more than a Chad Huffman type.
In terms of comps, it's a really hard profile to match. One who kinda sorta almost looks like his profile is Carlos Lee. While he came stateside a year older, he was in the category of big body, lots of raw power, took a while to make it come together. Obviously, that outcome would be the VERY optimistic version. Other guys who had solid careers who sort of kinda look generally like Franmil - came stateside young, always young and interesting, but it took a while before production really jumped - might include someone like Jorge Cantu or, more depressingly, Wladimir Balentien.
When you ask "if he keeps this up..." Well, I mean, obviously he's not going to keep averaging three hits and more than a homer a game. If you think he could conceivably carry a .60 slugging percentage through he end of July, there's kind of a mix of guys over the last decade ranging from top prospects to Carlos Peguero types...

Which is why you don't give up 98mph starters for 1 year rentals. Quite honestly it's stupid to give up anyone that can throw that hard (Matt Bush, De Los Santos, Tayron Guerrero, Luis Castillo). I'd rather they succeed with us or they fail entirely than to trade them away and have them become a Kluber.

Quote from fenn68 on May 10, 2018, 8:56 amIntersting discussion on Reyes.
I could see why he was not considered a MAJOR prospect ... he future will rely on hitting with power (a lot of power) since the rest of his game defensively, base running will not ... plus in this era everyone has HR hitters making him less unique. Add that early in his career he did not show the hitting or power. Apparently the FO did see something since they kept promoting him (now in AAA at a only 22) and he ... in the short run ... is excelling.
I guess at this point he has "improved" his ML prospect status but not all that sure he has shown enough (over an extended time) to warrant getting excited about. His calling card will have to be elite power at the ML level with a legit BA ... TBD. We should see next season ... but a good chance with another organization be it via a piece in a trade package or lost via RULE 5 if not protected (he was not last winter and was not selected).
Renfroe got the love of a Top 100 prospect because he was the 13th pick in the 1st round and was (at that time) considered a potential 5 tool talent (if he could make better contact). Scouts / projection can have their failures.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 10, 2018, 11:15 amI really do try to temper my enthusiasm for these guys as they get closer to the major leagues.
Remembering so many before them who we thought would be solid big leaguers......and weren't.
Many though were derailed by injury.
I guess I am just hoping, considering the scarcity of homegrown position players we've developed, that this guy was/is a late bloomer and is going to continue to hit.His age/level gives me hope.
Along with the high number of HR hitters these days is an even higher number of Strikeouts.
If this is the new norm I guess Reyes may fit right in!
Lol
BTW,I would be just fine with .250-.320-.480 with 40 HR.
Maybe a poor mans Jose Abreu?
Or Joey Gallo?

Quote from David Jay on May 10, 2018, 4:57 pmLooks like we have our first set of significant org moves. Scholtens up to El Paso and Lake Bachar up to San Antonio. We're expecting Luis Patino out to Fort Wayne very soon so it would certainly make sense to see Margevicius move up to Elsinore as well, but that's pure speculation. We'll keep you updated as we hear more.

Quote from Ryan Payne on May 10, 2018, 6:57 pmLuis Almanzar to Fort Wayne as well...
For those who didn't see the announcement on Twitter. Good to see him on a full season team. Logan Allen shoved it tonight. Kid continues to impress.
