Minor League Discussion

It probably got mentioned somewhere, but anyone know when the full Minors squads report?

Any releases or retirements at that time.... only 2 I saw somewhere were 2B Luke Becker & RP Anderson Polanco

Pitchers and catchers today, full squad Monday. We'll have the full camp roster posted this weekend.

Your coverage has been great. Thanks.

With the arrival of the minor leaguers we should start seeing some players being released as soon as next week ... especially pitchers in AAA/AA. By my quick and dirty count (taking out 13 for the ML roster) ... I have about 28 vying for AAA and another 15 vying for AA .... so, 43 for 26 slots. Hard to get all them the necessary work even in the next 3 weeks. Injuries will as always eliminate some for early consideration (likely to extended ST) but there are a lot of older "fringe" arms in the mix that will need to be weeded out to allow the younger prospects to showcase.

The specter of injury should keep the release pace somewhat controlled but it has to begin.

Well, Non-roster guys will first get sent to Minors side.  Releases end of Minors ST.  Always ends up being a lot of guys floating around in Extended as Injury depth for both upper & lower levels too.

But, yeah, with the depth of especially the MLB bullpen flowing down into AAA, I would expect of the 8 Minors FA P's signed at AAA/AA levels:  Eickhoff, Frankhoff, Yacabonis, Barraclough, Hu, Chase Johnson (injured), Daniel Camarena, & Hector Hernandez that likely 4 of them will be released.

C & OF seem relatively set (OF competitive to advance, especially to Ft. Wayne), but INF at upper levels is overcrowded too, and of course there are always cuts across the system to accommodate last year's draft picks, many of the P's barely or didn't play at all last year.

Thanks! Feeling good about what we've got in the pipeline too!

Full camp roster is live on the front page. Pete Van Gansen and Jalen Washington have both retired.

There were a few offseason releases: Luke Becker and Anderson Polanco early, Drew Mitchel, and Heriberto Sosa (who was suspended all of last year). Other guys you don't see were minor league free agents who didn't resign (note: Tyler Higgins was initially reported as resigned, but then he got an offer from NPB and was allowed to pursue that). Deivy Mendez was taken in the minor league phase of the Rule 5.

Padres Minor League Camp 2020 Opens

Just for reference, 20 MLFAs signed in the 18-19 offseason and 10 of them got invites to big league camp. Seven, including three big league invitees, didn't make it out of spring training.

This year, there are 11 new MLFAs in big league camp right now and six more on the roster above. I suspect Dozier and one of the two outfielders makes the big league roster, but of the 15 others, I wouldn't be surprised if 10 never suit up for an affiliate.

That said, it would be surprising if any of the NRIs were released outright from big league camp rather than getting sent to minor league camp and then released from there toward the end of camp. If you see someone get released this early, it's because he's found another club that gives him a better chance.

With 72 guys currently in big league camp, if you assume they'll wind up with about 80-85 guys at the complex for Extended/rehab, that means on the order of 42-47 releases before minor league camp breaks.

I guess I did not notice this sooner but the minor league season starts on April 9th (a bit later than in the past) while the ML opening day is a couple of days earlier ... so now a full 2 week lag before the minor league seasons start.

That extra spring training for the players in the minors probably keeps more around (delaying any cuts) to insure against injuries and to provide rosters for games. Given the minor leaguers just arrived ... basically a full month to sort everyone out.

Just seems different ... not good or bad ... just different.

Back in the day ( a decade ago) they would start on a Sunday with most teams starting Monday.  With them starting on a Thursday now it makes sense to start the last Thurs in March.  From the MLB side of things, March is the dead month outside of March Madness, so there is more freedom for viewers (also means season doesnt end in November).

The minor league side always starts roughly the same day as the season has a very specific end date (Labor Day).  Also for teams in the NYP and MWL you dont want to start the season earlier as half the fields are frozen until May

Think on the ML side they are also trying to add some more off days during the season while not delaying the end of the season ... cuts down on some of those brutal stretches without a day off they have had in the past.

Has to be a bit mentally tough for the minor leaguers who were NRI and now sent to the minor league camp. In ST for three weeks and now still in ST for another month ... at least the other minor leaguers have just arrived and they only have to endure a month before playing for real.
