Quote from Brian Connelly on September 18, 2019, 9:34 amHad never heard of the "Tricky League"! SUCH a great baseball only name, concept....
But yeah, Jason & Lynch & anyone else wondering... it's routine for the July 2nd signees, even ultra high profile guys NOT to play in the year they sign (except the Tricky league, obviously).
Most of those signees will play in the Dominican Summer League NEXT season, but the highest profile guys sometimes come stateside to play in Arizona Rookie League Short Season (esp. for Pads & others with two AZL teams). DSL starts earlier, so some guys, especially P's start there & then come to AZL when it starts.
Keep in mind these guys are 16 y.o.; equivalent of U.S. High School Soph/Juniors... but most with limited English, travel outside of their country, etc... Think about that. It's close to a year after they sign before they enter at the very lowest levels of MLB team's system.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 20, 2019, 2:20 pmI am glad that they cannot play too much. They should at least finish high school. It would be a plus if they can learn English as well. Summer leagues with professional coaches still puts them ahead of most high school draftees. Being so young adds to the excitement because they can still grow and add muscle, besides which their games have more room to improve.

Quote from fenn68 on September 25, 2019, 3:19 pmMight be interesting to see how the Padres deal with Jorge Ona this winter.
Big money international signing ... just 22 ... off to an excellent start in AA in 2019 before the season getting derailed with a right shoulder injury that ended up as season ending surgery.
Rule 5 eligible ... to protect or not to protect. Remember with the new 26 player rosters ... teams such as Detroit, Baltimore, Miami could be more inclined to select (and keep) a quality position prospect (think the Padres and Torrens and Cordoba).
Then add that the Padres don’t have a deep pipeline of offensive prone OF in the near term pipeline. Would they expose more pitching (know they have a number of others in the pipeline that don’t need protection).
Easy to say no one will take an injured AA OF but pretty sure STL had a similar view on Cordoba and NYY on Torrens (who was in low A and had injury history).
Of course, Padres may have seen him first hand and don’t think he is a prospect any more ... so?

I see us packaging a few dudes to clear 5+ 40 man roster spots... Something like Ona + Bolanos + Luchessi for something ... Urias + Q + Arias for something else.. Or the like I could also see AJP trading a few rule V dudes perhaps with another lesser piece or 2 for a further away spec.. Sort of bankrolling the lower minors with added talent while managing the 40 man roster and improving the MLB club.. Should be one of the busiest offseasons in Padres History and only going to get busier as that J2 16 class comes due (rule V) in 2021.. Expect some of those dudes to be invluded in deals this off-season and next..as well

Well, the unique issue with Ona is that even though 1 month in AA before injury certainly not "ready" for MLB... you've got almost 14 MM (7 sign + near 100% penalty) invested in him. Can Preller even take the outside risk of losing him for 100K in Rule 5... just looks bad

Probably more about carrying major upside potential (if they still see that) as the 40th man on the roster ... at least in 2020 ... than a concern about being ML ready. Would expect at least 4-8 prospects "not ML ready" to be preserved on the roster. After Headley and Hughes ... don't think Preller worries too much about looking bad for taking a gamble.
Same then goes for teams that really are out of any chance to compete in 2020 and little coming soon ... using the new 26th slot for upside potential is a logical strategy.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 27, 2019, 3:32 pmI have never been a big fan of Ona. Even so, the last thing you want to do is lose a player who has just had a breakthrough. We seem to have several players on our 40 man who are just "space fillers". Just okay or even below average but they are reliable. I would rather lose a few of them than guys like Ona. Space fillers can always be replaced. If young guys are unable to step up to fill the void, there is always one or two to sign who will not be all the much of a drop off. Letting a big upside outfielder go, however, could haunt us for a long time.

FENN, literally every guy but Olivares & Espinoza on 40 (really 50) man roster played for Pads at some point last year. When you only have 14 guys theoretically available for your 26 man roster AND guys are constantly on IL, you CAN'T construct a good team with 3 vets making 20-30 MM each by having "4-8 not ready ML prospects" on the 40-man... what names are you envisioning for these 4-8 guys?
I realize the Pads have done some of this in the past, but I believe with VERY few exceptions that if a guy is on the 40-man the expectation is that he will play in MLB sometime that year. The Pads can't even begin to keep everyone MLB.com has on their top 30 list; how can you 40-man Espinoza and even Avila & block someone else from roster for guys with a 0% chance of playing in MLB in 2020? You hope to be able to outright them & keep them in system. 11-12 guys have to go as previously discussed...
Also, with 1 or 2 possible exceptions, "everyone" is already up; 17 debuts last year!
But Ona is a unique situation b/c SO much $ committed to him; more than double what Mackenzie Gore got. If another team takes him in Rule 5 & hides him all year & he works out to any degree, it looks BAD. Not saying Preller will, or even that he should; just pointing out that the $ given Ona adds a lot of pressure.

Quote from fenn68 on September 28, 2019, 1:51 pmI guess it is how “not ready” is interpreted. “Not ready” for the ML in April does not preclude the player being ML ready in July ... especially AA/AAA bound players. Add that the Padres do have a lot of talent than initially don’t need to be on the 40 man but can bolster the 26 man as needed during the season as players go to the 60 day IL or are released. Munoz, Baez, Margevicius, Bolanos, etc. were among the 2019 call-ups but not rostered last winter.
I would think the last few roster slots will be given to the higher upside prospects at the expense of fringe MLers who would be useful but not locks for the opening day 25 ... replaceable talent as needed mid-season.
Espinosa (very likely to be on the 40 man) and Avila (toss-up) set-up some interesting choices ... Padres could do what they chose not to do in 2019 and put them on the 60 day IL off the ML roster in mid-March ... opening up 2 roster slot for any deserving non-roster player.
Bottom line is that the Padres have a lot of ways to manipulate the roster before and during the season with rostered and non-rostered players to put a good 26 man on the field while preserving upside talent.
The question really is for the front office is how highly to they value Ona, Córdoba, Bachar, Eugy Rosario, Henry Henry for the future vs the player they would DFA / release. Side: if it is a healthy pitcher ... likely would be at some point a 26 man option.
Only the Padres know.
