Quote from MrPadre19 on August 2, 2019, 7:38 amI could see Cordoba as a valuable super utility player in San Diego.
Campusano is looking like our future starting Catcher.
Edwards....well,if AJ can restrain from trading him looks like will be a major league star, just at what position and for who yet to be determined.
Second base for the Padres if Urias doesn't produce?
I'm just as excited about Arias.....hoping he keeps on hitting but he may end up a trade piece.
He certainly doesn't have an everyday spot available in S.D. and if he does keep hitting, with his reputation as a top defender he could have tremendous trade value in a year or two.

Tatis is not elite defensively. Arias could force him off shortstop if he can hit enough which is still up in the air given his A+ level.

He might not be elite right now, but I do believe he is becoming one

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2019, 8:22 amWell don't expect Arias to create a challenge for Tatis for at least 3 years ... so a lot can happened with both sending their trajectories both ways. At this point the reports of Arias being elite defensively still leaves open anyone definition of "elite" and how much is still projection. Too early to debate that.
However, the comments got me to look at Tatis' performance (at age 20 as a rookie). Clearly offensively he is outstanding ... for SS with 300 PA ... he is #1 in MLB in wRC+ .... and in fWAR he sits at #4 (tied with Baez). Going to be hard to bump him off SS.
Cleary his defensive stats are not elite (if you like defensive stats). He does provide the debate generated by the visual where he makes spectacular plays and displays the best (most powerful) arm in MLB for an INF (been seeing that stat on a number of the TV broadcasts) versus the stats that are not that kind to his defense. His DRS is a -4 (19th) and his UZR/150 -2.1 (17th). Bit surprised on the range factor since he looks like he covers a lot of ground. Part of the negative DRS is his error rate no doubt. His 15 errors is 2nd most leading to being 23rd in fielding percentage. 11 of those errors are thowing ... so some hope of improvement.
Stepping back ... having the 4th best SS in MLB WAR (with fewer games than some others) is something to be enjoy and not really be that concerned about defensive stats.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 3, 2019, 8:31 amThe range factor seems off to me as well. The errors will come down as he realizes sometimes its better to not make the throw. Either way, I will enjoy watching this kid play. At least there is some fun to this team this year, and you can see pieces coming together.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 3, 2019, 8:35 amAaron Leasher is quietly having a good season at LE.
Improving in all areas over last season at a lower level.
I don’t know about advanced metrics but less than a hit an ip....more K’s than ip...and 4/1 K/BB ratio.
Any chance he develops into a “real” prospect?

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 3, 2019, 11:04 amSomething I noticed the other day. We have the leader in AVG at the top 3 levels of the minors. Technically it's the top 4, but Edwards got promoted. Abrams is also leading rookie ball. It probably doesn't mean much in the case of France and Castillo, but it's kind of cool to see. I wonder if it has ever happened before.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2019, 12:29 pmIt is good to see the on field production of some legit position player prospects basically after an intense wave of pitching prospects that have arrived (and coming soon) the tide turns to the next wave being offense.
Almost sounds like a plan if you think it takes a bit longer for the pitchers to settle into ML impact than position players. (aside from Paddack / Tatis observations of course).
I love the production is coming from young players (France aside) and not seasoned college veterans with limited ceilings.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2019, 12:39 pmI wonder what the Padres' front office really think of Castillo. 23, switch-hitting middle INF who signed as a minor league FA after a not very impressive minor league career but showed some signs of putting it together last season in A+.
He can walk at the end of the season so to ensure he is retained (if they want to retain him) he will need to be added to the 40 man. Given the apparent bat and the ability to cover SS/2B should be potentially a decent reserve INF and being in AA ... maybe in 2020. Padres do have Miller (not needing to be on the 40 man) covering that role if needed in 2020 so maybe not critical path UNLESS the Padres see some greater upside in Castillo.
Just something in the 40 man roster structure at the end of the season.
