Quote from Philip Spector on May 1, 2018, 10:55 amQuote from fenn68 on April 30, 2018, 3:40 pmI understand (from multiple reports) that Austin Allen is not a good defensive catcher ... but from a scouting perspective just how dysfunctional is that from the ML prospect perspective. Gary Sanchez had a bad defensive catcher rap and he is the #1 for the NYY because of his bat and the NYY seem happy (and winning). Is Allen's defense projected to be serviceable at the ML level since his bat appears to really be developing?
As I recall Allen was drafted because of his bat from a smaller college and mid-2017 his hitting really took-off in LE and he has apparently (but only about 100 PA) made the tough jump to AA in SA.
2017 (2nd half) in LE: just under 300 PA with a slash line 309/362/574 (.936 OPS)
2018 (April) in SA: just under 100 PA with a slash line of 364/423/773 (1.195 OPS) and low K%
Might be an interesting debate in about a year or so between Hedges (loved for his defense) vs. Allen and his bat. At some point Hedges will have to sustain hitting above the Mendoza line (probably at least .230-.240) to hold his starting slot. A NL team without much hitting #1-7 can do much winning with #8-9 below .200. Would hate to bat #7 ahead of those two ... never see a good pitch to hit.
Gary Sanchez is a great framing catcher.

Quote from Philip Spector on May 1, 2018, 10:58 amNot a expert by any stretch but with David on Buddy Reed's start, this reminds me of the start Getty's had couple years ago and people started going crazy for him. I'm much more excited for Olivares.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 1, 2018, 11:31 amI don't remember what was said about him when Gettys was drafted but I do know that Reed was only drafted where he was due to his athleticism.Basically everything "except" his hit tool.
For him to have had this kind of start after his prior production pretty much living up to that evaluation is extremely hopeful IMO.
Plus I'm very surprised by his power to this point...not sure where that is coming from.5 HR's in 22 games is unreal for him.
I'm thinking if Gettys could cut his K's to 1 per game and a .385 OBP everyone would be ecstatic.
BTW I saw him play at Florida a few times and was really surprised when we took him so high for these very reasons.
I guess that's why I'm so excited in his start to the season.

Gary Sanchez is a great framing catcher.
And he has an outstanding throwing arm. The main criticism as he was coming up in the minors (at still by many in the ML) is that he "lazy" (their words not mine) behind the plate with bad footwork (really does not block balls well) and does not call a good game / handle the pitching staff well. He may have some plus attributes but he has some minus attributes ... not sure how one balances the two to call anyone a good or bad defensive catcher (by comparison to the norm).

Just a reminder that two of them have been inside-the-park. And that neither of those, even with his speed, should have been.

And yesterdays was a 460+' at the top of the scoreboard that the announcer wouldn't shut up about for the next 3 innings.

Quote from WindsorUK on May 3, 2018, 1:48 pmWasn't it this time last year that people were suggesting that Guerra be released?
The kid appears to have found his game in El Paso.

Quote from Commie on May 3, 2018, 5:57 pmNot calling for Guerra to be released (depth behind Galvis is nil), but after a good start he has been awful at the plate except for running into an occasional one. Starting to look a lot like he could have a career like Dusty Coleman: predicated solely on fielding ability and very occasional pop. AAAA at best.
Hope I am way off base here of course.

Quote from imakewaves on May 4, 2018, 6:47 amPulled this from the Eric Longenhagen chat on fangraphs. Thought it was interesting enough to share.MR: Luis Almanzar still hasn’t been assigned – is there something to worry about?Eric A Longenhagen: Yeah, it’s a weird situation. He looks much thinner than he did before he signed, just can’t add weight/strength. Have seen him here in extended and he’s not impacting the baseball the way he was as an amateur and I don’t know why.
