LHH OPTIONS FOR 2020
Quote from fenn68 on November 2, 2019, 3:37 amThis is sort of why a priority on adding a longer-term OF that can hit RHP (which is about 75% of the pitching) ... career vs RHP:
253/322/438 ... 2056 PA .... Myers (29 next season)
253/330/452 ... 210 PA .... Cordero (25)
239/314/415 ... 229 PA .... Naylor (22)
236/286/377 ... 1084 PA .... Margot (25)
221/271/459 ... 1006 PA .... Renfroe (28)
Somehow that makes Myers look good v the veterans in Margot and Renfroe. Renfroe looking more like the Austin Hedges of the OF. Can’t survive with 2/3 of the starting OF v RHP about 229/279/418 ... their defense can’t cover that.
We know Margot and Renfroe hit LHP (and Cordero has not shown the ability to hit LHP) so in absence of major adds ... a platoons are likely (if Cordero can stay healthy).
Cordero and Naylor may not be the future ... but are younger with lesser ML time so improvement is possible and, if nothing else, present value in a platoon role. Plus they are league minimum and longer control.
Trammell (if he can develop) should supplant one but near term not much in the system as blue chip LHH OF prospects ... may have to wait a few years for Abrams and the A ball / Rookie ball types.
Makes the quest for a quality LHH ML level OF who they can control for 2-3 years more a priority. Back to Dickerson or gamble on Akiyama.

Quote from fenn68 on November 2, 2019, 3:53 amHolt would be a good add ... more as the super utility guy.
At 32, a role player who plays both OF and INF:
650 games in the OF
837 at 2B
430 at 3B
then throw in some at SS and 1B
v RHP in 1743 PA ...272/338/382.

Quote from fenn68 on November 3, 2019, 4:15 amSaw MLB.com’s list of top 20 (plus 5) FA ... saw a few corner OF (RHH). Did note that Dickerson was not among the 25 players.
Given that in 2017 he was an All-Star ... 2018 GG in LF ... still had quality offensive stats with PITT/PHIL in a limited role in 2019 ... a bit surprised. Maybe since he was never a high profile guy on a contender he performance is under valued.
However, that may be good news .... without a lot of teams having a corner OF a priority ... he may be available at a very reasonable price while actually fitting a team need ... only turning 31. Adding him on a lower end contract leaves money on the table for potentially Akiyama. (Note: despite the commentary on Akiyama have to be cautious about his immediate impact ... and no idea how much he would command as a FA ... apparently only the West Coast teams are in play).

Akiyama. They could be multi-year contributors.
Gordon will be 36 and although he had a strong 2019 his previous 3 seasons were ... well ... suboptimal. More likely you get those 3 seasons than a repeat of 2019 in Gordon’s declining years.
I would like the Padres to give LHH ABs to Cordero and Naylor in 2020 to establish who they really are ... then phase in Trammel as appropriate. Unless they bring in an established full-time high quality starter as a LHH ... not interested in just a platoon filler.
While Naylor may have potential in his bat, he should NEVER set foot in RF again. His defense will cost us more than his bat would provide. If you insist on Naylor in the OF, it has to be in LF to minimize the damage.
The ball will find Naylor where ever you play him....he is just bad like that former Padre star Paul McNulty.
Cordero is not much better and has so many holes in his swing that it won't take long for major league pitchers to find every one of them....kinda of how they figured out Christian Villanueva and now he is playing overseas I think.
Naylor and Cordero are not the long term solution for San Diego and actually I would rather see some of the younger guys that have more upside get the chance than having to watch Naylor and Cordero and read about how bad they are after games next year.
You mentioned upside 3-finger. I hate to say it but Cordero still has more upside than anyone in this organization not named Tatis or Machado. He has a 60-arm, 70-power and 70-80-speed. If he can shorten his swing he can be a plus hitter possibly. It is no stretch at all to see him become an average hitter with plus power. His defense is average At Worst, he has the athletic ability to become a Gold Glover. Yes he hasn't played in a couple of years but he still has infinite potential.
Naylor, we know, has no value outside of his bat. Yes, he is fat and slow and a below average OF. But he has a plus quality bat. Seeing as how we only had 2 above average bats last year, can we really just dump one of the only good ones we have? He is obviously not perfect, but he has true value to our lineup and the only position available to him right now is OF. No need to keep harping on his defense. We know.
Naylor is big yes.. But Naylor is NOT slow.. Dude can motor at least at avg speed if not a tick above.. And he is a very good base runner.. Why I think he can work out as an avg defender with some more experience inbthe OF.. Remember he only played like 6 weeks in the OF as a Pro before having to play at the mlb level.. He has a lot of room to grow

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 3, 2019, 4:51 amI’m hoping we improve the OF enough that Naylor can play LF “everyday” in EP next season.
IMO he needs the defensive reps everyday if he is going to be an everyday corner OF’r for us going forward.

Quote from fenn68 on November 3, 2019, 5:22 amHis is playing OF in winter ball ... so reps are reps as a fielder.
Although I would love his defense to be better .... I could work on that development at the ML level along with his hitting. Sending him to AAA will not help his bat at this point ... and his bat will always be his #1 asset.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 3, 2019, 5:30 amI’m just not that bullish on Naylor.
I’ll rephrase.....I hope we improve our OF enough we don’t have to rely on Naylor to play everyday in S.D.
If he played everyday in EP he would most likely gain value as a trade piece to the AL.
IMO his bat won’t every be good enough to warrant the defense....and I think he can become a “slightly below average” fielder.I just prefer “well above average to superior” defense.
Of course I hope I’m wrong......but he would need to hit .280/.340/.480 with 25+ HR.
Is this what everyone else thinks he will do next season?

Quote from fenn68 on November 3, 2019, 6:15 amThe problem is that every organization has “hitters” who are better suited to the AL as DH/1B .... basically an oversupply available cheaply in FA or via trade. Naylor in that role has little trade value unless he proves himself as a plus ML hitter ... no one is going to buy into PCL hitting.
Hence, even if in the long run Naylor is a trade chip, playing him in the OF has a chance to improve his marketability. Now if the Padres get a full OF change out that will alter my thinking but if the core is still based on Myers / Renfroe in the corners .... play Naylor and jettison one or the other (preferably both).
Side: corner OF not necessarily the ideal fielders we all want ... yet they still survive in the ML. If they hit ... apparently they play. Myers has his defensive faults ... Renfroe prior to 2019 was rated below average ... Reyes was just poor. For 2020 it really boils down to Preller finding two upgrades at the corners ... if not then it is up to Naylor to hit out of the gate to get some offense going for this club.

I think the .280/.340 is light tbh.. I think he hits .295/.380/.490 with 25 + HRs 10 SB 😆 (he likes to run here and there) and plays a tick below avg LF or RF... Ideally a fit for Red Sox Benintendi trade.. Naylor = more control and saves them what $5 mil for 2020.. Maybe something like Naylor + Arias + Bokanos for Beni? Not only that but could save them $20 mil if JDM opts out.. Naylor assumes DH role .. They can keep Betts without having to make that JDM vs Betts decision to stay under lux tax like they want for 2020
