If he is going to be soooo good....why trade him ?

If you guys really think Naylor is the future of this team then the Padres are in serious trouble

I think he will be Jon Kruk 2.0 to be honest.. But if someone else thinks that too (another team) than a better all around LF like Beni can be acquired .. I mean even with great offense Naylor is probably a 3-4 WAR ceiling guy.. Whereas Beni can probably have a few seasons at 5 + WAR because his added value on defense..

Or not ..if he becomes a better fielding JDM...

I mean JDM at 23 (rookie yr..1 full yr older) .274/.319/.423 .742

Naylor at 22 .. .249/.315/.403 .719 (Petco vs Houston big time difference) probably about =.if not better Natlor.. Also of note is JDM went south to the .660 OPS level for a few seasons before correcting himself..

While I do agree with you that Naylor is very likely to improve, I don't see him becoming JDM. JDM is just a one-off freak of nature who took his career to another level very late in his career. Few players ever get to the level he is at. None do it as late as he did. I do agree, however, that Naylor could be at something like .280/.350 with 25-35 HR in 2 or 3 years.

His is playing OF in winter ball ... so reps are reps as a fielder.

Although I would love his defense to be better .... I could work on that development at the ML level along with his hitting. Sending him to AAA will not help his bat at this point ... and his bat will always be his #1 asset.

Actually I agree with MrP, another year in AAA would do Naylor good, both offensively and defensively. For Naylor, who is supposed to be a big bat, he has yet to bring his power into the game at any level. I find it hard to believe that he cant improve in AAA, where he hit 10 HRs compared to what both France and Urias did in AAA. Because if Naylor can not hit for power, his no good to SD. And if Naylor can not hit for power in AAA, then he doesnt stand much of a chance to in the MLs. Send him to AAA to work on both in game power and defense.

Naylors approach in the bigs looked much better than France and Urias in 2019. I don’t think the Padres were thrilled with all the homers Urias hit in the PCL. They wanted to see patience, an opposite field approach and Naylor displayed both in 2019. Urias didn’t until the final month. I really can’t believe how hard the fan base is on Naylor. He was terrible in OF defense. With that said he’s 22, learning a new position and showed well in his first bit of big league action at the plate. Naylor is already a smarter and more disciplined  hitter than Renfroe, Myers, Hedges and Margot combined. I think Naylor will be a positive contributor to 2020 Padres.

Exactly your point, he is 22. He is not ready yet, and we are past the point of having kids get ready in SD. And I wasnt talking about his approach, I am talking about his performance. And his power hasnt performed, so lets get him to AAA, and give the LF spot to Dickerson who is better at defense and at the plate at this time.

My point was he was 22 and didn’t look overmatched at the plate. He hit 18 homers total for the season between AAA/Bigs which isn’t bad. It’s not like hitting home runs was a problem for the 2019 Padres. Two problem areas were getting on base and hitting right handed pitching. Two things Naylor can do. Dickerson is clearly the better player at this stage of their careers. It’s just Dickerson will cost 10-14 mill a season. Naylor will be cheap and likely can be a very useful player in a platoon situation. I’d rather spend big on an ACE and go with a Naylor/Renfroe platoon.

Actually JDM did ok his rookie he.. Regressed his Soph yr and 3rd yr.. And became anstud on yr 4..after he was traded to Detroit.. The rest is history nothing late in career..at 25 he wasbab.912 OPS stud at 26 made his 1st AS.. Pretty typical of youngsters

Let’s say the 2020 staff opens the year with:

Stras or Cole/Paddack/Richards/Lamet/Joey

I’d be ok with some combination OF made up of Margot, Renfroe, Myers, Naylor, Cordero, Mazara. I think using platoons and going with hot hand would be good enough with improvements in the lineup also coming from Mejia over Hedges at C. Plus a full season of Urias over Kinsler/Garcia at second. That staff is playoff ready and will win games. If the Kids don’t get the job done on offense then use some prospect assets to acquire help during the season.
