LHH OPTIONS FOR 2020

PreviousPage 8 of 12Next

Just saw that KC declined the option on Alex Gordon. Its says on MLBTR that he may only want to play for KC; however, would he come hang with his buddy Hosmer in SD. His splits were still better than most on SD vs RHP. .273 BA, .350 OBP, and 10 HRs with 54 RBIs. Wouldnt be that expensive and MLBTR says his defense was still on the above average side of the scale. Thoughts on a platoon of Renfroe/Gordon in LF?

I would still rather have Dickerson, but Gordon could definitely be a quality addition. Especially in a platoon. For some reason I just thought that Gordon would be expensive. If he is not he should absolutely be on our list.

Well, the option declined was $23M and his buy out was $4M. I would imagine it would take $7-10M to sign him. Probably about the same as Dickerson, then it boils down to defensive skills, and who is better.

I would prefer Dickerson and if the scouts see it ... Akiyama. They could be multi-year contributors.

Gordon will be 36 and although he had a strong 2019 his previous 3 seasons were ... well ... suboptimal. More likely you get those 3 seasons than a repeat of 2019 in Gordon’s declining years.

I would like the Padres to give LHH ABs to Cordero and Naylor in 2020 to establish who they really are ... then phase in Trammel as appropriate. Unless they bring in an established full-time high quality starter as a LHH ... not interested in just a platoon filler.

While Naylor may have potential in his bat, he should NEVER set foot in RF again. His defense will cost us more than his bat would provide. If you insist on Naylor in the OF, it has to be in LF to minimize the damage.

I am trolling CBS Sports and they have listed their Top 50 FAs. Of course they are listing any puss throwing LHSP as a potential target for SD. I laugh because we already have two of those in Lauer and Luchessi.

However, they do list Dickerson as an option for SD. The other a little futher down the list that could be interesting is Brock Holt. Does play some OF, but mainly a 2B, with a .318 BA and .394 OBP v RHP last season. I know that we have Garcia, but Holt would be an upgrade over Garcia, correct?

The ball will find Naylor where ever you play him....he is just bad like that former Padre star Paul McNulty.

Cordero is not much better and has so many holes in his swing that it won't take long for major league pitchers to find every one of them....kinda of how they figured out Christian Villanueva and now he is playing overseas I think.

Naylor and Cordero are not the long term solution for San Diego and actually I would rather see some of the younger guys that have more upside get the chance than having to watch Naylor and Cordero and read about how bad they are after games next year.

This was an article by an author who obviously did not do any research. It is basically an opinion piece. Any big money free agent has the standard names: Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and this year the Angels. Brock Holt was only there because he thinks we are looking for a 2B. He obviously doesn't know what our priorities are.

You mentioned upside 3-finger. I hate to say it but Cordero still has more upside than anyone in this organization not named Tatis or Machado. He has a 60-arm, 70-power and 70-80-speed. If he can shorten his swing he can be a plus hitter possibly. It is no stretch at all to see him become an average hitter with plus power. His defense is average At Worst, he has the athletic ability to become a Gold Glover. Yes he hasn't played in a couple of years but he still has infinite potential.

Naylor, we know, has no value outside of his bat. Yes, he is fat and slow and a below average OF. But he has a plus quality bat. Seeing as how we only had 2 above average bats last year, can we really just dump one of the only good ones we have? He is obviously not perfect, but he has true value to our lineup and the only position available to him right now is OF. No need to keep harping on his defense. We know.

The only problem in your assessment is Naylors bat is not yet plus quality. It could get there, but it is not there yet. IMO he needs to learn how to get his power into a game, and should do that in AAA. He only hit 10 HRs in AAA last year. SD called him up to early last year.
