LHH OPTIONS FOR 2020

PreviousPage 6 of 12Next

Commented before that Houston will not deal either Tucker or Brantley .... Reddick is their odd man out (likely at a reasonable trade price). Both are have only 1 year remaining but Brantley is hitting in the heart of the line-up with a 315/377/504 slash line for one of the best teams in the AL .. not giving that up for peanuts while trying to win again in 2020. Plus he carries a $16MM contact. In the unlikely chance they were willing to move 1 year / $16MM of Brantley ... the ask would be probably Paddack.

In Boston the trade pecking order is more likely #1 Bradley, #2 Betts, #3 Benitendi who has the longest control at the lowest cost .... keep in mind that Boston will have a focus of getting under the luxury tax level to avoid some serious penalty as a repeat offender. I have Betts as a trade candidate given he has made it clear the will go to FA ... has only one more control year and that will be in the mid $20MM range via arbitration. A lot will depend on the new GM/ownership strategy and the idea they can run down NYY or a wild card spot.

Nimmo or Conforto may be available but not on the cheap ... as I said on Syndergaard the METS are legit contenders so the return will have to be immediate impact to improve their chances. Their biggest need is RP and a legit CF (they would like NOT to pick up Lagares’ $9MM option) ... so, Yates would probably get one. If not Yates then next up is probably a gamble on Munoz plus Margot and maybe another RP such as Baez. No reason for the better team (METS) to sell them cheap.

We haven't mentioned Adam Eaton yet.

Not only is he left handed but he hits both RH and LH pitchers just about equally.

30 years old and I believe the Nats have a team option on him they will likely decline so he should become a free agent....is this correct?

I'd prefer him over Inciarte if we don't have to give up anything to get him.

Guessing they will NOT decline Eaton’s option .... a pretty reasonable $9,5MM and another for 2021 at $10.5MM. More likely the take the option then consider trading him. Of course, they may just want to keep him since not sure they have a replacement for the 3rd OF slot. They are in the playoffs and likely are shedding a bunch of old (expensive) players via FA and then maybe losing Rendon and Strasburg (50/50 on their return).

If the Padres were interested in Eaton ... and as I expect he is retained by WASH ... WASH will have some holes to fill to remain a contender and likely some money to deploy. There may be a match without the Padres giving up any blue chip talent. How that evolves may depend on Strasburg staying (guess is yes with an extension) and Rendon leaving (good chance since he is search for that Machado / Arenado deal.

If the go into 2020 with Scherzer - Strasburg - Corbin, SP is not going to be their concern but offense will be RF (replace Eaton), 1B (replace Zimmerman), 3B (replace Rendon), and as with everyone RP. Padres could hit all those needs ... maybe not with all stars but with better than they would have and remember Eaton is not “great” just very good.

A long shot (very long), is that WASH will have money with some of their departures so could the right mix of parts going to them induce them to take Myers as part of the deal for either RF or 1B (net of Eaton to them would only be about $10MM for each of the first two years). Padres would need to offer a strong set of supporting pieces that are ML contributors / prospects but could work. Given the “dead money” scenario with Myers, Padres could lessen the pieces offered by eating $10MM over the next two seasons and come out the same financially as now.

I doubt Washington would want anything to do with Myers. More likely they would want Naylor for first base. It's the only position he can play well and he is young and cheap.

I could definitely go for Eaton. If we get him in a trade, the team options transfer to us correct? It would be nice to have the choice to keep him here for an extra year if needed.

I was extrapolating that Wash would keep Rendon and maybe let Eaton go.

But you're right...they could pick up his option and then trade him if need be.

That would be smart on their part.

Doubt anyone would WANT Myers (and his contract) BUT if taking Myers (and all or part of his contract) is part of the price to get the players the do want .... a deal can be made. Not just about Myers.

It is finding the right mix of players to go with Myers that the other team really values and the Padres deem expendable. Plus there are always teams that think they can “fix” an underperforming player with upside ... so we may be way over Myers but may have some traction with another team(s).

A lot of things would have to break perfectly for that trade to happen. First, the team picking up Myers has to believe that they can fix him. If they do it might be possible to get him for a few second tier prospects. If we want to get Eaton AND get them to take Myers, that would almost certainly cost us at least one premium prospect.

Getting out of Myers contract would obviously be nice. I would just hate to eat money or deal prospects to move the contract and see his bat come to life on another team. The good Wil Myers brings so much to the table that this team needs. When he’s not in his strange funk, the guy is an impact player. They could do a bad contract for bad contract deal, but I don’t see the bounce back potential in many of the players that would be received in a Wil trade. I guess if AJP was able to move off the contract and it opened up money to sign another bat that would be nice. It just seems the more I think about a potential Myers trade, the more I lean towards just keeping him.

I think Eaton would be perfect at the top of the  Padres lineup. I doubt Wash parts with him though. Solid player on a decent contract and they are a playoff team.

Inciarte I think will be available. The Braves are pretty stacked with young OFs so I imagine they would listen. Inciartes defense, on base skills align with what AJP seems to be looking for and he’s on a reasonable contract. His injury history is a concern.

I think a vet power bat like  Jay Bruce or a buy low young guy like Mazara, Bauers or Zimmer could be seen as options for AJP.

Dodgers may be willing to trade JOC.. As well..
