LHH OPTIONS FOR 2020
Quote from JasonE135 on September 23, 2019, 9:23 pmLooks like I was wrong. Dickerson won a gold glove in 2018 and Calhoun supposedly has gold glove caliber defense as well in LF. I don't think we can trade for anybody better than Dickerson without emptying the farm system. I like him because he is good and he is feasible. We aren't getting a Juan Soto or an Austin Meadows.

Quote from TatisJr on September 23, 2019, 10:21 pmWow I have some crow to eat! I had no idea Dickerson won a GG in Pitt. I remember he slimmed down a bit, but had no idea he had improved that much with the glove. I still don’t see him as anything more than a platoon guy. Jason, many of your posts seem to be all or nothing in regards to trades. No one has suggested Soto or Meadows as a target, but there are plenty of guys who would fill roles similar to Dickerson that wouldn’t cost a Padres top prospect. Dickerson was given away to Pitt and traded to Philly for international slot money and a PTBNL. I think AJP will be able to fill some holes with the chips more valuable than that.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 24, 2019, 1:07 amI didn't know either until I started digging into them. It was a shock to see Dickerson had won a GG. Also who would have though a guy who is 5'10", 215 (Calhoun) would be a defensive whiz either. Sorry if my posts are overly definitive. I like Dickerson. I like his fit. I don't want to lose top prospects in trades for temporary guys. Those are my opinions and that's all they are. AJ is going to do what he thinks is best. He is the GM after all.

I don’t remember Corey Dickerson “slimming down” and he’s always been a good defender.
Youre not thinking of Alex Dickerson who also played in Pitt.?
I also don’t believe there are “plenty” of guys just as good that wouldn’t cost a top prospect in a trade.
He is an everyday player if he can stay healthy....

Quote from fenn68 on September 24, 2019, 6:54 amPadres made it pretty clear they need improvement against RHP .... Cory Dickerson fits that bill. He is 30 and had a shoulder injury that kept him on the IL for a couple of months, so maybe keeps his price (and other teams pursuing him) down.
He is about a 2 WAR per year type over his 6 years ... and has shown he can effectively hit RHP and LHP. Coming off a $8.5MM salary.
He clearly would be the safer bet for 2020 than Naylor, Martini, Cordero, Jankowski (Padres could still keep one of those four) if you actually want to win in 2020.
Alternatives .... contract requirement .... and will he want to come to SD?
Not clear what other teams will be motivated to sign (for an elevated price) Dickerson ... that may be the biggest issue in creating a price point. Although he is very good he is not a super-star ... 30 .... shoulder injury in 2019 ... and in the current FA world big contracts for 30 and older are less common. Would guess a 2 year deal with an AAV in the $9-10MM range would get it done ... with some team.
Did a lot of looking for trade options (as good or better). Can find some names (but a lot less that I would hope) ... then the better options don’t legitimately seem to be “on the market”. Aways can bundles some names to send to another team to get those players but getting the other team to take the deal is likely wishful thinking. Also, some of those better trade options come with a substantial contact too .... so maybe not a benefit to the payroll v. Dickerson.
So although trading for an equal or better option than Dickerson using some combo of ML players and level 2 prospects is maybe preferable .... that may not be a functional option. So, signing Dickerson becomes more realistic ... if that is where they want to spend vs maybe SP?

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 24, 2019, 8:19 amConforto.. Nimmo... Benintendi..Tucker (pr Brantley) ..Inciarte...would all cost prospects but wouldnt necessarily that many/much except for maybe Tucker.. I can see Astros making the Vet Brantley available to male room for Tucker.. Especially if they win it all.. Nimmo is the riskiest with his history.. And we also have SHOGO FA from Japan as a low risk high reward under the radar signing

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 24, 2019, 8:24 amAnother option is to go get Lindor (switch) to play 2B.. And keep the OF influx (maybe add Dickerson) as is .. Tatis.Lindor.Machado..Dickerson..Renfroe..Hosmer... Mejia..Myers ..would be an insanely improved lineup and if Wil just has an avg yr wow!

Dickerson 100 percent did slim down. (Just find an article on his GG award) He was a DH in Tampa and regarded as a poor defender in Colorado and Tampa. I stand corrected on his splits. He hits lefties better than I had thought and with his plus defense(that I was completely unaware of) he is definitely an intriguing option. Dickerson was DFA and given away to Pitt in 2018 and traded for a PTBNL and international slot money to Philly. AJP’s trade chips are more valuable than that. He’s got good young controllable talent to move so yes there are plenty of guys who can fill Dickerson’s role through trade. My take from the beat writers is FA isn’t going to be the route AJP goes to upgrade the roster.

Quote from TatisJr on September 24, 2019, 9:16 amJason, sorry if I sounded dismissive, that wasn’t my intent. When I said your posts seem to be all or nothing in regards to trades I was referring to you worrying about losing Gore or Patino in multiple posts and saying “we can’t get anyone better than Dickerson without emptying the farm”. Just looking at what Dickerson has been traded for and the recent trade market I think there are guys like him that will be attainable without trading top prospects. I think AJP has 8-10 of his top prospects that aren’t getting moved at all. When I mention prospects in trades I’m not referring to AJP’s Gold pieces like Gore, Patino and Campusano. The sweet thing about being a Padres fan right now is the system is literally overflowing with young talent. I’m sure some of the young guys AJP deals will go on to make it sting in the future, but it’s a good position to be in. I consider myself a baseball nerd and Madfriars is a community of baseball nerds. I love hearing everyone’s ideas, proposals and opinions. Keep em coming!

What would even motivate Cleveland .. a legit playoff caliber team with Kluber returning next season to trade one of the elite premier players in all of baseball who has 2 years of control left? I suppose if SD offered Tatis and Gore they would at least listen.
Side ... why Lindor at 2B? ... he is by far the better SS than Tatis who is among the worse statistically in MLB.
Maybe call Cleveland after next season (or the trade deadline) ... Lindor is NOT going to sign an extension with anyone and has been pretty clear about going FA for BIG money and, given his personality, bigger national exposure.
