LHH OPTIONS FOR 2020

PreviousPage 4 of 12Next

I see trades for incremental upgrades in the OF mix .... not for an impact bat because in reality don’t see any impact bats on the market. Probably some good upgrades can be had but not worth any of the true high ceiling prospects ... it is “high ceiling” players that the teams needs all around the line-up. Bottom line the Gore, Patino, Trammell, Abrams are more valuable to the Padres’ winning future than any just good short term bat.

Beginning to warm to FA Cory Dickerson .... LHH LF who should be relatively low cost / 1 year but can hit / low K%. Since Myers if “versatile” in the Padres’ view ... he could slide to RF or CF (hope not but). Sort through the rest to see who survives and who is jettisoned. Just tough make the major upgrade when very little is out there to realistically get.

The Japanese options are intriguing ... given the Padres international presence pretty sure they have scouted them extensively.

I guess as the Padres get squeezed to deal “excess” to construct of 40 man roster, I could see more deals for OF prospects (like Trammell) using some of the better players who may not get ML playing time. Just keeping a player not playing but getting older and losing trade value ... move on to the younger upcoming prospects.

Sort through the rest to see who survives and who is jettisoned. Just tough make the major upgrade when very little is out there to realistically get.

The problem is that there is already a lot to "sort through" on the 40-man roster: 8 guys!  PLUS Trammell, plus guys like Ona & B. Reed who could conceivably get added....  Adding a guy makes it absolutely neccy to get rid of AT LEAST 1 guy.    I think the mix they have is good; a lot of the "problem" everyone is trying to solve (lack of LH esp in OF) has already been solved by trading 1 of our top 4 OF (Reyes) for Trammell.   NONE of the 5 LH OF we have (counting Trammell) was available after the 8th game last year:  Cordero & Jankowski Injured, Martini & Trammell not on team, and Naylor wasn't ready.

Really think everyone needs to CALM DOWN, take a deep breath, and see what this roster composition can do:  These OF need to platoon/time share to maximize output vs RH/LH pitching; which couldn't be done first 3 months of season.  Naylor hasn't hit LHP at all, Renfroe is much better vs LHP.  Same in CF, even Myers has better much better splits vs LHP last 2 years.

Martini & Jankowski are band aids to get to Cordero & Trammell who need at least 1-2 solid months in AAA/AA to be ongoing MLB options...   I'd like to see:  Jankowski platooning with Margot as leadoff hitter (with Tatis #2) on O.D.  Martini & Naylor competing to get a lot of playing time as a platoon option in the corners as the 5th OF.  I would start the opposite handed guys against tough #1-3 SP's... but give the RH OF opportunities against mediocre #4-5 RH SP's... if you can't hit THOSE guys in the first 1-2 months, guess what... you're a platoon player, period.

Then hopefully Cordero & Tramell pushing the other LH OF to AAA or off roster as the year progresses.

Pads were insanely unbalanced RH for first half of season this year... that's been addressed.  Let's give it a chance to see if it works before we close doors/block MLB playing time for elite former prospects still young & growing like Naylor & Cordero.

I have little problem throwing in the towel on Renfroe, Jankowski, Martini if they could pick up a legit OF bat. Not much more we can expect out of them ... and not enough to support a playoff contender. I would say the same about Margot if he were not the only legit CF for the start of 2020. As it stands to start 2020:

Myers (just because) - Margot/Jankowski (R/L platoon) - Naylor / Renfroe (L/R) platoon takes care of the 5 OF on the 26 man roster. At best that is still in the bottom 1/3rd of the NL offensively.

Now if they are not really trying to contended in 2020 they could start the season that way and wait (hope) Trammell, Cordero, and/or Olivares are ready to get promoted in the second half ... oh yeh, and be productive out of the game which is optimisitc.

Of course since I can't get comfortable with any significant options for adds ... that may just be 2020.

I have advocated for Corey Dickerson in the past.

”When healthy” he’s a solid LH bat who hits .300 and plays good defense who won’t cost much.

I’d prefer him over Martini esp since he can play all OF positions.

He is a free agent? He is exactly what we need and a near perfect fit! He should absolutely be our top free agent target! If we do that then Renfroe becomes available for a trade if needed. He also will not be a long term signing (probably) so he can form a bridge to our up and coming outfielders. He likely will not cost A TON so our ownership should not be opposed to ponying up the money for him. Now that I look him over I think he should be our #1 target this off season. He can hit right-handers!

Before we get all drooly over Dickerson, here are some things to keep in mind. He made $8.5M last year, so will probably want a raise, maybe 9-10M. Against RHP, he hits fine to a tune of .290, but he only has an OBP of .333. Is $9.5M worth a HR per every 20 ABs and a OBP of .333?

For a team with a .239 team BA and .309 team OBP that is a huge improvement. Plus he hits right-handers well, is left-handed and helps even out the lineup. You won't find an improvement like that for any less than $10 million. He will probably want $12-$15. Still worth it for a few years. We aren't going to get a .350 OBP-30 hr left-hander for less than half our farm system or $20-$25 million per year. He seems to be far and away the best available.

Kole Calhoun is very similar in OBP, BA is less, closer to .260. Which is better defensively and which comes cheaper?

Calhoun gives you about 10 more HR but currently his BA is 60 points lower and his OBP is 20 points lower. Neither is a gold Glover but I believe Calhoun is pretty bad. No idea about the cost difference.

Hard pass on Dickerson if he cost anything more than 2 years/18 mill. He is a platoon guy and not very good defensively. I’d rather see Naylor or Cordero if Dickerson wants a lengthy deal or big money. From the sounds of things I think AJP is going the trade route anyways.
