Bolanos & Lawson Fit?
Quote from onlypads on December 1, 2019, 7:44 amResponding to Fenn: Your point makes sense.
However, with regard to 2021,if I ask myself if I think our young arms are enough to get us through the reg season and best the Dodgers/Nationals lineups I cannot say yes with confidence. Eventually, I am banking on that proposition, but not in 2021. Given Hosmer and Machado's age, I think we need to be aiming to contend in 2021 and 2022.
So a low cost bridge (if it even exists lol) makes more sense because it gives us flexibility and culture. In 2021, I just dont think it is likely our young rotation beats all odds, beats precedent, overcomes innings restrictions, etc. I mean maybe Davies and Lamet are veteran enough. A short bridge deal does not detract from 2022, but rather positions us for a deep 2022 run while improving our chances in 2021.

Yes......it would hurt, but I don’t think Lamet would have to be included.
Same with Mariners for Haniger I think.....Patino would probably have to be involved in either deal.
So if you could only have one pitcher the next 4 seasons who would you most like to keep....Patino or Lamet?
Yikes both would hurt. Not for Whit. Love his game, but I think Edwards / Arias can be deployed 2021.

And a HUGE upgrade (think Whit) at 2B before a SP at the moment... A C like Contreras would be very much welcomed as well .. With that said as weve seen TOR's are like unicorns to acquire so if one comes to us via FA or Trade we need to act on it..
Yep 100%. Edit: I lied. I want two OF bats that hits 800+ OPS against R. I think Trammel and Grisham can slot in various places in the future -- whether that be CF/LF. I actually think neither Contreras or Whit shouldn't be signed to long term deals. I am being such a homer, but I really want to see Mejia and Edwards develop. This is why I am so high on Villar being signed. Great bridge: instant improvement and will not block future prospects.
Onlypads, we already got 1 LHH OF bat in Grisham. We may get 1 more, but I can only see us making 1 major trade this offseason. We made 1 trade so far, not major, and it cost us 2 big pieces. I don't see us parting with the 6-8 pieces, several of which will have to be HUGE, which will be required for multiple major trades. I can see us trading for a Conforto level player. I think even he may cost us a Lamet. Trades are going to be expensive.
I know that many people want Merrifield. I think he is the most wanted player in mlb at this point. There have been so many teams and so many proposals for him. He is now worth so much that any trade for him is going to end up being a huge net loss for whoever makes it.
I must say I have no idea what AJ's plan is this offseason. He made 1 trade for a less-than-major starting upgrade and a backup? CF. He spent $8-$9 million of our available free agent money on a RELIEVER, which is one of the few things this team didn't need. Why didn't he spend that money on Dickerson or Villar? There are no TRUE TOR starters available for trade. There are 2 available on the free agent market, but we cannot afford them if we are signing a reliever for $9 million. At this point, I have to believe that a TOR is not really in AJ's plans this offseason. His only option seems to be overpaying for someone like Gray, someone he can try to pass off as a TOR but who in reality is nowhere close. I have to believe that he sees Grisham as a starter and a real piece of our future plans. Is he even going to target another LHH OF, or was Grisham our only OF upgrade? What does he do about the huge hole we suddenly have at 2B? How much does AJ still have available to spend? Does he think he can solve all of our problems with trades? We have a lot of problems. If teams know we cannot spend money and our only option is trades, then they know they will have us over a barrel. I am totally lost at this point. I sure as hell hope you have a very good plan AJ!

Quote from TatisJr on December 1, 2019, 2:38 pmI wouldn’t say Lauer was a big piece. He was always facing a short clock in the Padres rotation. From a trade value standpoint he was in the back of the line among Padres pitchers. Urias poor ML performance and questions if he was coachable likely dinged his value quite a bit. I’m very happy with that deal. Acquiring a 26 year old 2.5 WAR pitcher and filling a big club need with a young LHH OF’er is a major trade in my book.
i don’t think AJP goes that aggressively after Pomeranz if he didn’t think he had a couple big moves coming down the pipeline. I do find it interesting so many posters here are confident the window will open in 2021 or 2022, but don’t think AJP can open the window in 2020. The Padres have some issues, but I don’t think they can’t be filled this offseason. I also think we are underestimating some of the young ML talent. Mejia, Quantrill, Naylor, Paddack, just got their first taste of big league life. They will get better!

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 1, 2019, 4:02 pmJason.... EASY! I think Preller does have a plan. All the moves have a sneaky good aspect to them: the overriding theme is he's paid MUCH less in $$ than more expensive / inferior alternatives would have cost.
Pomeranz next year costs only 4 MM plus 2 MM after next season (Assuming Signing Bonus split equally over 4 years). So that's 4-6 MM depending how you look at it in 2020 to have Pom who was dominant out of pen for Brewers. And prior history much > RP than SP. The alternative was bringing back Craig Stammen for maybe 4-6 MM next year (but likely have to offer a 2 year deal). They've potentially "covered" the eventual loss of Yates as Closer too, which neither Stammen nor any other next tier FA RP would. I initially thought this deal precluded extending Yates, but when you look at how they handled the signing bonus to Stammen, the door looks open to extending Yates at very similar, maybe slightly higher AAV's (as closer), but not for as long.
Davies next year costs only 5 MM Arb est. Compare to other back of rotation guys in FA all older, less effective, and more expensive. Both Lauer & Lucchesi would have hit arbitration simultaneously next year, AND maybe not be good enough (especially Lauer, who is still improving) to be in the rotation in 2021. So needed to trade at least one of them while their value was relatively high. Davies is > Lauer, gives RELIABLE depth in rotation, and could surprise in PETCO. OR he could be flipped in trade, OR if he's not that great, no $ committed next year (3rd yr ARB eligible)
Grisham for Urias I'm most dubious of, but easier in-house/FA to find a 2B than an upside min salary LH OF who could be a regular or at least strong side of a platoon. Basically he had the year Pads hope Trammell has this year, and it decreases pressure to "rush" Trammell up before he's ready. Just increases the odds Pads are going to "hit" on some of their now 4 young LH OF.

Quote from onlypads on December 1, 2019, 5:51 pmMe too. The four seem and wipe out breaking ball will play well in Petco. Hated that we had to resort to Stammen. I believe Stammen's numbers were deceiving; he consistently allowed runs in high leverage moments.

Quote from onlypads on December 1, 2019, 5:55 pmI absolutely believe more moves are to be made. I believe 2020 is possibility, just hard to make up that much offense. I think our.first half was more indicative of our potential and that there will be development as others mentioned. Idk we will see. I think it will be close. That being said, I think 2021 - 2022 is our best window and thus should be prioritized. I mean look how dominant the Stros were and they faced obstacles in the playoffs.

Quote from TatisJr on December 1, 2019, 6:05 pmMunoz/Baez/Strahm/Castillo in the 6th and 7th with Pom and Yates closing up shop. Hard not to be excited about the BP. I’d like to think at least one of the flame throwers G. Reyes, Diaz, Wingeter,Guerra step up and have a good year. Bednar looked impressive and you might have a Cal or Morejon work from the pen. Deep, talented and versatile options for Tingler to call upon.
I still can’t believe the Dodgers didn’t sign Smith or Pomeranz. They have such a clear need there and both seemed like a perfect fit.

Quote from onlypads on December 1, 2019, 6:29 pmPom and Munoz as set up to Yates is filthy (last seen Castillo too). Middle relief can be covered by the upcoming SP class (specifically love Baez in this role).
Worried that Strahm has a tendency to give up HRz. Since, we have depth, moving him may make sense.
