Around the League...non Padres
Quote from fenn68 on November 28, 2020, 4:52 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on November 28, 2020, 4:31 pmApparently the Phils can not afford to sign JT Realmuto.
Ownership saying they lost $2 “billion” last season.
2 billion?
Surely that’s not correct?
I can’t even conceive that would be a real number .... or anything near that.
2 million attendance at avg. ticket of $50 + $50 concessions, et al ... is “only” $200MM lost revenue not considering the lower cost of not running the ballpark for fans. Paid a portion for the season salaries but got TV money to partially offset that.
If they said between $200-300 MM net loss to income ... would make more sense.
If they lost $2 billion they would be bankrupt.

I saw this in a couple different reports.
But also saw between $150-$200 mil.
Quite the difference.....which is why I brought it up.
I’m guessing they lost money in ways other than tickets/concessions etc.
TV money for only 30 home games vs. 80?
Not the difference in the two reports obviously....

Another legend of the game lost too soon.
What a horrible year in so many ways.

WOW!

Anyone have an opinion about The Cleveland Baseball team opting out of their nickname of 100+ years?

Not as blatantly bad as "Redskins"... but a WAY outdated term that in this century is pretty derogatory.
I appreciate Cleveland being (relative to Daniel Snyder) proactive. It'll feel weird for a year or 2, then everyone will move on.
Now if the "Washington Football team" could just actually find a name! EVERY time I hear it crack up a little...

About time (note I was at one time from Cleveland) ... but I give the ownership some credit (and I rarely do that) but apparently they have had several meetings with the Native American communities to work through all this. A couple of years ago they benched "Chief Wahoo" logo (and they really should have sooner) so progress has been made.
The one comment from Dolan (the owner) that the new name will have no connection to Native American cultures ... basically a clean break from the past.
Getting a new nickname in this day and age is not easy ... to start with a lot of people have been out copywriting options for some time hoping to extort money from the club to buy the copyright. Plus need to find a "neutral" name that can be marketed effectively and logo friendly for jerseys, mugs, etc. ... helps if a cuddly stuffed animal can be in play.
Some seem to want to go back the the Cleveland Spiders (NL club in the late 1800s) but actually not the forerunner of this AL club which had a few names prior to 1914 when it became the Indians.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 24, 2020, 11:52 amNats were able to pry away Bell for a relatively low cost. Would love to have Bell to replace Hosmer in the 2023 season after Hosmer opts out. By that time, Nats superior pitching would have tanked and they'll need someone like Weathers or another top prospect to keep them competitive.
Since the Padres have virtually no 1st base candidates to replace Hosmer in the system at this time, let's check back in a couple of years. Bell will only be 30/31 at that time and should have a couple of more good seasons left with sufficient power to replace the power we will lose from Myers' departure. If we can hang onto Campusano, the trio of Abrams, Bell and Campusano should be able to replace Pham, Myers and Hosmer by 2023 although it won't happen all at once.
