Around the League...non Padres

Nats were able to pry away Bell for a relatively low cost.  Would love to have Bell to replace Hosmer in the 2023 season after Hosmer opts out.  By that time, Nats superior pitching would have tanked and they'll need someone like Weathers or another top prospect to keep them competitive.

Since the Padres have virtually no 1st base candidates to replace Hosmer in the system at this time, let's check back in a couple of years.  Bell will only be 30/31 at that time and should have a couple of more good seasons left with sufficient power to replace the power we will lose from Myers' departure.   If we can hang onto Campusano, the trio of Abrams, Bell and Campusano should be able to replace Pham, Myers and Hosmer by 2023 although it won't happen all at once.

He will be a FA in 2023 ... so no need for a trade ... (he is a Scott Boras client ... so there is that).

Not surprised Pitt dealt him (at $6MM) as they clear their entire payroll (now down to about $47MM) and not really surprise the return was not all that much as 1B/DH are just not in demand and he is coming off a disappointing season.

Has a couple of seasons to rebuild his value before FA.

Fenn, you are absolutely correct and I should have checked his FA status before posting my comment.   Nats window for another championship is closing soon despite having Soto.  Unfortunately, with Turner and Bell both FA after 2022 and Scherzer a FA after this year the core players will be Soto, Robles (maybe) and pitchers who may be struggling with injuries despite large contracts.  For that reason, Realmuto makes a lot of sense for them to stay relevant in the NL East.  Good luck Nats!

Casali signed with the Giants for 1.5M today.  Would have been a good pick-up if we didn't get Caratini and what Caratini might get via arbitration is probably less than Casali.

Looks like Puig wants to play in 2021 after sitting out because of COVID.  I'm glad Padres are not linked to him - too much of a distraction also probably beyond budget anyway.

Perdomo to Milwaukee?  Good luck Luis; just couldn't seem to put it all together in San Diego but still a good Rule 5 pickup several years ago.

Anyone have an opinion about The Cleveland Baseball team opting out of their nickname of 100+ years?

I would opt for "the Tribe" the Cleveland Tribe. But that would probably be offensive to some people also. I hope to God they don't pick "the Spiders." Uh

I continue to be shocked at clubs overpaying for 2nd/3rd tier free agents.  Minor, Smyly, Ray, Grossman and even McCann seemingly all got far more than their relative worth.  For example, most projections I've seen of McCann's expected 2021 performance are strikingly the same as for Austin Nola!  Blake Treinen is nowhere near a top ranked RP anymore, but the Dodgers overpayed him last year and will so again for the next 2 years.  I'm just hoping that this last signing doesn't adversely affect our chances with Yates - I'm already thinking we don't have the resources for Rosenthal.

When the collective bargaining agreement is up after this season, I think it is even more likely that there will be two expansion teams added to compensate the owners for their losses in 2020 and 2021. And I think Nashville will be one of them. They already have the funding for expansion fee and to build their own ballpark. They are really out front of it. Nashville Stars

I listened to an interview yesterday with Dave Dombroski, and he was really involved in the Nashville Stars expansion project. And he did not share your optimism, which is why he left them and pursued the opportunity in PHI.

Not optimistic about expansion or Nashville getting a team?

It was on XM if you have the ability to look for it, I was working while listening, so was not paying 100% attention. So I cant recall if it was specific to Nashville, or more directed towards the actual expansion time frame.
