Agree. Very hard to factor in the value of a team's belief that his is the piece that will get them into to playoffs. Clearly StL believes they are built to depose MILW (maybe a mirage given the pitching) and the CUBS. A non-contender giving up the same package would be foolish if that just kept them in the middle ground.
One of the faults in all the statistical trade analysis. Real people are making deals for factors beyond just stats / salaries ... like winning in the playoffs and frankly their own comfort / ego.
Sort of why sellers usually look to contenders first ... better chance for an "overpay" vs. the stats value.
Actually, both teams "won" this deal ... at least for now.

Maybe not if we were c0mpetitive and adding a Goldschmidt might assure us a playoff appearance.
The 2019 Cards are in a different position than the 2019 Padres.
We might make that exact same trade and be happy about it in 2021.

A little surprised but his peripherals and bat speed were pretty decent even last year so not way out there but I thought more of a 2 year. $17MM/yr. On the flip side (and compared to McCutchen) thought Brantley was way low at $32MM/2 yrs.
Seems as though the AAVs were similar $16-17MM but it was the extra year to McCutchen that was the difference although MLBTradeRumors seemed to think both would get 3 years at around $15MM AAV.
I guess maybe we should think Brantley's deal being low is the real surprise. He is perfect for Houston who was looking for a LHH LF (sometimes 1B/DH) and actually has stats over the past few years equal to Machado ... and did play a full season in 2018.

Descalso, meh either way. His bat wasnt that great in AZ so no big deal. The Harvey signing may look good for ANA.

Just saw something that blew me away...the Marlins are the only Team without a top 100 prospect!
You say,well...that's not that amazing.
Well,then you remember they just traded away Giancarlo Stanton,Christian Yellich(MVP) and Marcell Ozuna.
Yet they STILL don't have a top 100 prospect?
Wow.

Inexcusable. Stanton had the mega contract, but MVP Yelich & Ozuna?! They were at rock bottom before the trades, and needed quantity/depth too, but really need quality now.... digging their heels in on Realmuto for a reason!

After the Stanton - Yelich - Ozuna "trades" the word is that the Marlins do not want a repeat with Realmuto and are holding for a ML (or ML ready) show piece at the front of a return that includes more. You can see why not much is happening.
Add that they think if nothing happens this winter ... they would still be in good shape (maybe better) at the trade deadline in engineering a deal.
I bet they hold too long (although don't really know what is being offered now) and not get anything like they are currently demanding.

Yeah, trading a Catcher isn't like trading a Pitcher at deadline; has to learn the entire staff, etc. Even though he's great, only some teams will have any interest, etc. Don't think his trade value will increase over whatever it is now.
