I really hope these guys do well where they ended up.....but to this point they have all proven to be just what we found them to be.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 9, 2020, 5:21 pmMax Fried appears to be the one prospect we traded in 15’ to hurt.
But...it took four years to matter.....currently,
3-0
1.59 ERA
.89 WHIP
Good for him though considering the injuries he’s come back from.

Yeah... disclaimer: I completely understand the hurricane of trades that happened when Preller got here are all intertwined, so this is a little bit pointless, BUT... we definitely lost that trade. 1 year of Justin Upton, a minor leaguer P whose name I can't remember, and now instead of Max Fried... we have Hudson Potts.
Can you IMAGINE our 2021 rotation!!! Uggh.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 10, 2020, 9:32 amPhillies DFA SP/RP Enyel De Los Santos we traded for 1 yr of Freddy Galvis. Surprised. His stuff reminded me of Lamet's, and he's still only 24. But wasn't good in limited MLB time in 2019. Hadn't appeared in MLB this year, made O.D. roster I think, then optioned when down to 28.

Yeah I was mainly pointing out how well he was doing in case others hadn't noticed...not so much a complaint.
In actuality the thought was back them that we would regret quite a few more....so far its mainly just Turner and Fried.
Unless you count Grandal....which I don't.
I was ecstatic when we traded that guy away.....However,I do wish we had a Catcher that can hit.

Never know what the organization sees in a guy. He was the #10 prospect ... had been optioned to the alternative site (so options were not the issue) ... good pitching is alway a need .... only 24 .... curious.
Probably will get claimed by some team even if just for the alternate site ... Miami?

Quote from fenn68 on August 10, 2020, 9:59 amHard ball. Saw that Cleveland sent Plesac home after he broke COVID protocol and left the hotel on Saturday night after pitching. Home to quarantine and then test after three days to see if COVID free.
Zero slack given to one of their top pitchers ... good ... sends a message.
May not miss his next start but still a message sent to the entire team.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 10, 2020, 10:23 amI'm not a Preller defender, but two years ago when Potts was tearing up the Cal League and Fried was still struggling to regain his stuff, I believe the opinions on this trade were much different. Likewise, when Enel de los Santos was traded for one of the better defensive SS in the league (and we really needed on) everyone was in an uproar even though de los Santos was not viewed by scouting experts (certainly not me) as probably a middle reliever because he had not developed his secondary pitches and did not have the best control of his fastball and slider. We got a good year from Upton even though he was hurt from time to time but when the team went south it was obvious he wasn't going to get the big bucks as a FA in SD. He's still a decent hitter 5 years later. Galvis also has had some better years offensively after he left SD and did some remarkable things on the defensive side, however, he was not the long term solution and we did not want to spend big bucks in FA for him.
My point is that it is hard to judge which trades will work and which ones won't. People like to focus on these trades but not so much on Tatis and Paddack when the first two were stop gaps and the latter two were team core pieces. All trades should be put in the context when they occurred. The 2014 Padres had virtually no tradeable veterans and those that had some value were going to be FAs. Preller came on after the 2014 draft and after the trading deadline. It seems he was given the edict to improve the team and, on paper, what he put on the field in 2015 was a lot better than what was there at the end of 2014. We lost one exceptional player in Trea Turner and a very good pitcher in Fried, but that's all we had to trade - prospects with potential, even though the latter just had TJ surgery. If we plug in Tatis at SS and Paddack at the front of the rotation in 2020, who do you want going forward in the next 5 years? What's done is done and hopefully for us fans the front office will get it right more times than they get it wrong.
For me, the two trades that really hurt us right now is the decision (pre-Preller) to trade Rizzo to Chicago for Cashner. This ultimately led us to go after Hosmer when Yonder Alonso obviously was not the answer. #2 was the failure to complete/allow the trade with Miami that would have gained us Luis Castillo, who eventually was dealt to the Reds. Preller got a lot of flack for not fully disclosing possible injuries to Rea, but when you are trading pitchers how do you know what you are seeing is actually going to amount to anything. Rea was fine when he was with us before the trade. If you consider Espinoza got hurt after the Red Sox complained about Pomeranz and then Paddack got hurt but we didn't complain on either or go back on those trades. Arm injuries are a fact of life for pitchers and having Castillo in our rotation would have solidified the rotation sooner, in my opinion, vice having to sign Richards or trade for Davies, both of whom I like but neither is Castillo or what Castillo is going to be.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 10, 2020, 11:41 amThoughts on the Cardinals situation?
Here's an opinion:
If they keep getting positives what do they do?
As this story states you can't just shut down "one" team...that would mean 3 teams in the Central would only play 50 games....others would also play less than 60.....that doesn't seem fair to the teams playing their whole schedule.
Also, wouldn't be right to shut down the whole season because of one team.
So,they need to use their Taxi squad players and get on the field.
Could MLB maybe waive the service time issues for them?
Also doesn't seem fair that they would have to start the clock on all their prospects at the Alt site.
I would hope MLB would do whatever they could to just help the Cards field a team enough to get their games played.....
