Around the League...non Padres
Quote from Randy Manese on July 28, 2020, 12:59 pmRenfroe had a monster game for TB yesterday, but with the Padres those days were few and far between. I like the approach I've seen so far and day to day, Pham is going to help us more than Renfroe. Wish him and Margot well in TB and hope Pagan starts pulling his weight in the bullpen.

Apparently they had some positives on Friday and Saturday but decided to go ahead and play on Sunday.
If they keep getting positive results it could halt the entire season for everyone.
If it is contained to the Marlins (and they are now "off" until next Monday) not likely putting the season at risk for the league. If this becomes a reality for a lot of other teams, different.
Sounds as though they will first just "postpone" games to make up later (off days, double headers) when these situations pop up. Many are accepting the real chance that not every team gets to play 60 games ... with winning percentage is the decider for playoff teams. Desirable no, but working with reality.
Remember the big money sweetener comes with the playoffs ... so going to get there one way or another.

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2020, 3:54 pmA new report indicated that a number of the Marlins went out on the town when they were in ATL ... basically broke protocols. Zeroing in on that escapade as the source of this outbreak.
IF true ... I would vote for “suspension” (without pay) for those who participated. Suspended for stupidity.

MLB needs to quantify the situation more... just b/c you can theoretically fill 15 spots with the 60 man pool doesn't mean it's safe, smart, or valid to do so...
Would think owners & players could agree to some extent here. Top of my head; >5 guys COVID cumulative on a team, postpone 1 game & re-test everyone. >10 guys COVID cumulative I honestly think you have to "postpone" all games until it gets back down to "only" 10 or less.... need the time/distance to make sure the remaining guys are really healthy & isolated. There would be a lot of "stop/start" with the >5 "pause" button, but it's now pretty obvious if you DON'T do that, the situation will inevitably worsen.
The reality is, the Marlins (or any other team in same situation) are probably not going to make up all these games. I say, "so what?". The season is already an asterick filled messy experiment; it's just the way it is. The 16 team playoffs "takes care of" a lot of the inequities that were impossible to avoid this year anyway. Who cares if teams end up playing different #'s of games by season end? Schedules are already drastically imbalanced.
What I don't know how to handle (obviously MLB doesn't either) is "next" visiting team arriving... how much time is "enough" to get the locker room / clubhouse safe? 48 hrs? I have no idea.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 28, 2020, 5:28 pmSaw a lot of protocol violations in the Padres dugout and no doubt Tingler noticed it too. So far, we've been very lucky but you can't tempt fate in a pandemic. I think the Marlins' situation should press home the fact that this is not business as usual. If they can become more disciplined in their reactions to good results, they have a better chance to continue forward intact and competitive. Just control what they can and not worry about what they can't. Stay on the side of safety first because I, for one, want to see this season play out.

Quote from fenn68 on August 2, 2020, 4:50 pmCoincidence? Something new going around?
Hosmer out with gastritis.
Terry Francona to Cleveland Clinic with a gastronomical problem (similar to in ST) ... out for at lest a couple of games
Kris Bryant misses his second game with ... you guessed it ... a gastronomical problem.
Not the “normal” health problem in MLB.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 4, 2020, 11:14 amThis was a day or 2 ago: BA / OBP in early going....
- Franmil Reyes .194 / .219
- Hunter Renfroe .182 / .229
- Manuel Margot .100 / .150
- Franchy Cordero .150 / .190
- Austin Allen .091 / .167
- Travis Jankowski .000 / .250 (5 G, 3 AB: Defense/PR)
- Luis Urias --- (Asymptomatic COVID)
....anyone detect a pattern here? I hope all these guys get going (except vs us of course), but so far I'm "OK " with these trades 🙂
Pitchers: Brad Hand a rough start, but Adam Cimber & Phil Maton so far so good. Logan Allen optioned down in ST I (Indians). "Erics" Lauer & Yardley good so far (Brewers). Aaron Loup made the Rays O.D. roster. So did Ronald Bolanos (Royals), but he got optioned down.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 4, 2020, 12:46 pmHey Brian, any chance you could recap Preller's first off season moves?
I remember most of the major pieces but I'm sure there were other lesser knowns that have panned out?

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 4, 2020, 2:48 pmHad 50 guys or something on roster end of last season with all the IL-60 guys, so first...
- Lost: Robert Stock-RP, Eric Yardley-RP, Nick Martini-OF, & Nick Margevicius-SP all on Waivers
- Bought out injured RP's: Adam Warren & Aaron Loup. Warren had TJ Surgery Sept 2019. Loup to Rays as Minors FA
Then..
- Traded Travis Jankowski to Reds for Intl Pool $ which became SP (& OF!) Zayed Salinas ("Top 30" 2020 Intl Prospect)
- Traded Lauer & Urias & PTNBL or $ (still owed) to Brewers for: Davies & Grisham
- Traded Austin Allen & Buddy Reed to A's for: Profar
- Traded Renfroe, & 2B prospects Xavier Edwards & Esteban Quiroz to Rays for: Pham & Cronenworth
- Separately Traded Margot & C prospect Logan Driscoll to Rays for: Pagan
- Traded PTBNL or $ (still owed) to A's for: Jorge Mateo
- Traded Cordero & Bolanos to Royals for: Tim Hill
Urias could still turn out good to great, but so far the collective early return from this offseason looks awfully good...
(Franmil Reyes & Logan Allen to Indians for: Taylor Trammell was at 2019 Deadline)
