Given the oddities of scheduling in a shortened season making handicapping difficult, thinking teams from the NL Central may be the Padres biggest competition for the Wild Card slots (assuming LAD wins the NL West).

NL Central has some good teams beyond CINN ... and they all should rack up wins vs. a very weak AL Central .... wins get the Wild Card.

NL East may be worse off having to play NYY, TB, Boston, may more than offset playing Balt and TOR.

Best strategy is for the Padres to win the NL West,

True....we need the Reds/Brewers/Cards to beat up on each other I guess.

We can't have more than two from that division make the playoffs.

Same with the East really....Can't have more than two of Atl,Phil,Was.

With 7 from each league we need 3 to be from the NL West....but yes, winning the division would be ideal.

We don't want a one and done situation!

I thought we are back to the old playoff format .... 3 division winners and 2 wild card teams ... since the MLBPA did not approve the final league proposal.

That is way I worry about the "easy" NL Central taking at least one.

I guess you’re right.

I even googled it to be sure before I assumed and must have seen an old list of “new rules”.

Oh well......now we really need to win the Division.

With all the other changes I just don’t see us as 1 of 5.

Franmil Reyes was sent home from Indians Camp until he can pass two Covid tests.

He isn’t positive.....but he was caught on Social Media at a 4th of July Party without a mask.

Urias to IL (COVID) and Lauer to IL ("tired"?) .... fans in MILW might be gnashing their teeth on the trade sending Grisham / Davies to SD.

Baseball used to be about scouting, drafting well, and player development. Today, its just all about money. The Dodgers are just going to out spend everyone on the planet.

Machado 10 years at $30MM per ... Betts about $30MM per year just longer.

Dodgers have a big payroll but not from this front office signing a lot of expensive FA ... they signed their players that they drafted / developed (Kershaw / Jansen) and players the scouted who developed with the LAD (Turner).

Dodgers walked away from pursuing Machado, Harper, Greinke.

In a couple of years the big money for Kershaw, Jansen, Turner and some others will be gone and they will be signing Bellinger and Buehler to big contracts.

If anything it is scouting, drafting, developing by the LAD that separates them from the pack ... not major FA signings.

Dodgers still do the other things well.  That's what makes it increasingly hard to catch them over 162 games.  In the short term, anything is possible and timing is everything.  Injuries, age, players becoming Free Agents, etc. means it has to be a constant renewal even for those with incredibly deep pockets.  NY, Boston, Chicago, LA, even Philadelphia - nothing has changed much in the landscape between the halves and the have-nots over the years.  Small market teams try to do the best we can to attract FA, but what we can control is draft well, try to recognize international free agent talent (that we won't be out-bid for) and develop players that make our team competitive night after night.

Renfroe did not start for Rays today, but did come in as a pinch runner?

Franchy and Bolanos are both making their first starts for the Royals in about 15 minutes.

This situation with the Marlins is worrisome.

Apparently they had some positives on Friday and Saturday but decided to go ahead and play on Sunday.

If they keep getting positive results it could halt the entire season for everyone.
