Around the League...non Padres

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpxkTbNbG-w ... here's a much tougher call ... as a "letter of the law" guy, I think they blew this call ... because Martin was out of the lane too early ... and that's one person's conclusion according this review ... https://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/1969-mets-j-c-martin-1.32070525 ... interesting!

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/a-dumb-rule-almost-ruined-the-world-series/ ... a good look at the questions/issues

Mets hire Carlos Beltran as their new manager.

You think the Padres went out on a limb on the Tingler hire....this is NY!

Does anybody else think that the Giants' qualifying offers to Bumgardner and Smith were totally unexpected?  Granted Bum had a good year, but was his asking price going to be at or around 17.5 million given his past couple of years prior to last year?  Seems a little high - I thought 15 million was about the ceiling for a pitcher whose probably on the downside of a very good career.  What really seems out of the park is the offer for Smith.  Sure, he is a solid closer but the Giants are not the Yankees, Red Sox or Cubs that could put that kind of money on a closer if they are not assured of being in the playoffs.  Maybe Giants are too much in the glow of a nice finish to 2019?  Would like to have a shot at Bum as a back-up to Strasburg but not at 17.5 million+.  Both will probably stay in SF because doubt anyone else offers them that kind of money and they know it.

Guessing they are pretty confident that the QO will be turned down but if not very good trade chips at the deadline (probably yielding more than the Comp Pick).

The players are potentially seeking a longer term deal for security even if the AAV is less than the $17.5MM.

Is Bumgarner better off at his age and declining skill set with a $45MM/3 (AAV $15MM) than a one year deal at $17.5MM? Less sure about Smith but same logic and a high risk RP ... $36MM/3 better for security against regression or injury?

Both sides taking “gambles”.

MadBum easily worth 17.5 mil 1 yr..so no surprised

Will Smith 17.5.. If I am he I take it ..cause he is getting 3/39.. Risk it take the 17.5 for 20 and then hit FA in 2021 when the QO can't be offered a 2nd time around.. And ink that 3/39.. That would be in essence a 4/59.5 big win for Will..

Agree on both.  Not surprised on MadBum, but it will drag his FA value down a little.  Get the sense he's ready to move on.

Will Smith should take it.  Even if he "only" gets 2/24 next year + 17.5 MM in 2020 still > 3/39.  No Q.O. HUGE relatively for a RP's market/contract.

Only other dark horse possible "taker" on Q.O. would be Ozuna.  Young enough that a better offensive year than last 2 might really pay off next year with no Q.O. attached... risky though.   Other 8 guys seem like locks to reject Q.O.

According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants' managerial search is down to Gabe Kapler, Joe Espada, and Matt Quatraro.

Now we can't feel so bad about Tingler, right? 🙂

So much good stuff here ... https://twitter.com/MLB/status/1192968848401674240

My favorite is the Ozuna fail ... (it's actually shocking how close he came to getting a glove on the ball!) ... with the Neo-look-alike a very close 2nd 🙂

According to ESPN, Washington reached the postseason with MLB’s oldest active roster. In fact, each of the five oldest teams in baseball reached the postseason, along with seven of the top eight.

Rats ... just as Padres are getting young, being old is cool!

For some reason the story that "broke" today re the Astros sign stealing made me nauseous. I won't recount the details as you can all read them elsewhere if you haven't already.  Still going on this year with whistles instead of banging. That means the camera was still in operation after MLB warning.  Maybe this is where we are as a society now, but I don't have to like it in this our National Past time.

Fines, yrs long suspensions for Hinch, bench coach and GM, forfeiture of #1 pick next two years.  Here's betting none of this happens.
