Around the League...non Padres
Quote from LynchMob on September 17, 2019, 9:33 pmJose Pirela hit a two-run home run, his first of the year, in Tuesday's win over the Braves.
Pirela started in left field and batted eighth for the Phils on Tuesday, and in the fourth inning he caught a hanging Dallas Keuchel slider and walloped it off the second deck facade for a two-run dong. The homer was his first in nine major league games this year, split between the Padres and Phillies. He was part of the club's September call-ups and will see very limited action down the stretch.

Quote from WindsorUK on September 21, 2019, 3:53 pmCubs GOTTA be regretting signing Kimbrel.
Just about to hit 0-4 with a +6 ERA after blowing another 9th inning lead.
Guy single handedly (okay, he's getting help....) taking the Cubs out of contention.

$43MM / 3 years!
Prior to the signing ... and during the holdout in the first half ... it was interesting to hear the debate on the national networks on Kimbrel's value. Pretty split. The one side (usually ex-ballplayers) focusing on past results though everyone was crazy not to sign him for big money. The others were sort of trying to parse out the good and bad of his recent season(s) and concluded there were enough warning signs NOT to sign him for big money.
Give Kimbrel's agent gets a gold star ... he got the max return for his guy.

Quote from fenn68 on September 22, 2019, 2:43 pmFollowing up the Cubs slide to irrelevance .... went into the 9th today leading 2-1 with Darvish going the full game .... STL jumps on Darvish for 2 quick runs and takes a 3-2 lead (which they hold and win).
Pity the Cubs did not have a closer like Kimbrel to shut the door ... OH WAIT ... they do.
Cubs get swept by STL in Chicago in a critical finish in the NL Central ... STL locks the Division and Cubs appear to have fallen out of even the Wild Card.
A lot of negative commentary surfacing (as it usually does in the media when things go south) about both the Front Office (poor player evaluations and farm system support) and the owner (not spending enough give the recent new revenues from winning). Sort of the standard media / fan playbook when a team fails to meet expectations / hype.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 22, 2019, 8:33 pmEveryone knew Kimbrel wasn't worth the money that he wanted anymore. So he just stood by and waited for somebody to get desperate. Too bad that it worked. I hate to see that.

Quote from fenn68 on September 25, 2019, 8:32 amQuote from JasonE135 on September 24, 2019, 5:16 pmI am sure he will still be expecting $20 million per year.
Expecting ... yes. Getting $20MM over multiple years ... no.
For Keuchel ... in this era ... it length of the deal will be the issue and balancing that with the AAV. (he will benefit for not comp pick attached).

Quote from fenn68 on September 26, 2019, 5:38 pmMaybe I missed this earlier but today I turned on the CWS game and Jose Ruiz was pitching. Ruiz was a Padre farmhand as a catcher who they tried to convert to RP. CWS claimed him before the 2018 season and behold ... he is in the ML (39 games this season). He is bad though ... 5.89 ERA / Whip north of 2.00.
No loss for the Padres and pretty telling on the CWS bullpen.

Quote from fenn68 on October 8, 2019, 10:37 amFollowing the NFL model of pressuring cities to provide better facilities ... MLB has just said it is OK for Oakland to consider Las Vegas as a site for a move. A few months back the told TB that it was OK to pursue Montreal as a home for 50% of their games (sure it would not end there).
Now although never like teams moving from their loyal fan base .... OAK and TB have been two successful franchises on the field ... yet, they are consistently near the bottom in home attendance (TB is usually in the running for the bottom with Miami) and both cities are not all that supportive of a new stadium for those teams ... OAK just kicked in a new lawsuit that hurts going forward with the expected new OAK stadium plan.
I do agree to a degree with cities not funding new facilities for any major sports team when their leagues are ranking in billions but I do recognize neither TB nor OAK are strong financial teams and without subsidy by someone or the other MLB franchises, a new facility will not get done in those cities. Tie that with poor fan support for years ... maybe a move is realistic.
From what I understand ... OAK is a SF 49er / Golden State Warrior city first followed by Cal and Stanford ... and yes the LV Raiders hold a better spot ... A’s are just filler. TB is football both College and pro and has never been strong on MLB (despite the “theory” that all the retirees and baseball talent from FLA will support MLB). Miami seems to suffer a similar fate as a FLA team.
Action should be taken ... but this is MLB and they move as slowly making league decisions as the 3 1/2 - 4 hour games ... action is not in their DNA.
