Around the League...non Padres
Quote from LynchMob on August 15, 2019, 4:23 pmI really do not follow the AL (except for Trout) ... so this was surprising to me ...
https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-yordan-alvarez-having-best-rookie-year
... if Astros' Yordan Alvarez is in the lineup tonight, it will be his 50th MLB game. It also will cap what might be the best 50-game debut by a hitter in at least the past 80 years.
That’s a strong statement, but through 49 games, Alvarez owns a .339/.422/.694 slash line, which produces a park-adjusted wRC+ of 190 (90% better than league average). He has bashed 14 doubles and 17 homers, while driving in 52 runs.

And ... the best part is ... he was acquired from the Dodgers for reliever Josh Fields 🙂

The NFL is simply whacked!
They just reinstated Josh Gordon.......again..
He was “indefinitely” banned last December.
I mean.....what kind of precedent are they setting here?
Either he’s banned or he isn’t.
So what about every other player from this point forward?
Sorry....I saw this and had to say something to someone and you guys are the only ones who’s opinions I care about.

Well seems to be standard approach from the NFL .... substance abuse, domestic abuse, gun charges, drugs, etc. .... all are really irrelevant to keeping a talent on the field and create a vehicle to generate more money. Morals, ethics are not what the NFL is about.
NFL is more of an enabler of Gordon’s life long problem by giving him more adulation and money.
Reminds me of MLB (NYY I think) and RP Steve Howe years ago. Think seven drug busts ... but if a team needed a RP he was back.
In sports ... profit usurps morals and ethics.

Quote from fenn68 on August 19, 2019, 12:49 pmSaw an article from Bob Nightingale that was a version of the standard menu of complaints about how the game has changed .. getting boring with the every increasing focus on HR-Walk-Strikeout. Although I agree did not help he was using "old guys" Peter Rose, Goose Gossage as opinion formers.
However, the one comment that had me look at the numbers closer was MLB attendance ... cited that MLB attendance is down 790K (just under 2%). Opinion is one thing ... fans not showing up to games hit the reality of fans action.
13 MLB teams have lower per game average attendance than in 2018 (through last Sunday). Not surprised by Baltimore, Detroit, KC, Seattle, Toronto .... a little surprised AZ (good start), LAA (winning record) ... but was surprised by winning teams in contention: Cubs; Cleveland; Houston; NYY; and WASH. That is five teams headed for the playoffs losing fan attendance .... worrisome and may suggest there is more to this than winning / losing.
For the record, San Diego has the 5th best per game attendance increase ... 2468 / game (about 3%). Still sitting around 13th overall in home attendance.
Would be interesting to see similar comparisons for national TV viewing (those contracts are the key revenue producer for MLB). Personally, I have found the national games on ESPN and FOX almost totally unwatchable with them making the game secondary to the booth personalities, "guest features", etc. MLB Network is "better" in part because they use a lot of local feeds that tend to focus more on the games.
Seems to me that MLB executives are just putting their heads in the sand when it comes to long term impacts of MLB today. Clearly the Players and Umpires are only interested in what works for them today ... and their security / pay. Owners SHOULD be interested in the future unless the owners don't they they are long run owners ... will sell the teams ... so the future is not really their concern.
I am old ... I like players that put the ball in play and get on base and make base running compelling. Something interesting to watch. Walk - Strikeout - HR is just boring and even the HR becomes common place losing its luster.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 19, 2019, 1:28 pmJust like everything, I think you find that this current trend will run its course. About 2-3 years from now, you will get another team similar to KC in the middle of this decade that will find it too expensive to pay the 3 outcome guys and start collecting the high OBP/running guys along with the ability to play above average defense, and that team will be "revolutionary" again.
Hopefully it will be SD, and we can see a team based around guys like Tatis, Edwards, and others that can fly around the bases.

Agree ... and think the Padres are heading that way looking at their hitters in the minors and one report I saw where they were near (or at) the bottom in striking out in their leagues. The pitching, speed, defense model appears to be their counter culture plan. Like it.
If they go that route (and are successful), great entertainment for the SD fans .... just takes time to re-image the prospects (via selection and development). Then the analytical teams may have the data to change philosophy ... requiring time to turn their battleships. If the Padres are ahead of the game ... could be a nice window for winning. Hopefully for baseball, they have not lost a generation of potential new fans .... we old guys are fading away.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 22, 2019, 4:05 amThe Rays are pretty amazing.
20 games over .500 with their 2 best pitchers on the il.
With both returning soon they could be a force in the playoffs.
How do they do it?
They really don’t have a single star player on their roster.
Blake Snell is their “Star”.
Oh....and they have the #1 prospect in baseball.
I just think they don’t get enough credit for hanging with the “big boys” and for
their “formula” and how it is successful.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 31, 2019, 6:17 pmSo Gavin Lux has put up Luis Urias type numbers in the PCL.
Anyone wanna predict who will be the better Major League hitter?
