Around the League...non Padres
Quote from fenn68 on July 15, 2019, 4:11 pmDid you note that SF is on a real hot streak ... and has joined the pack of AZ-COLO-SD all within a couple games of each other and .... not clearly out of the wild card chase.
Will the switch from the expected seller to maybe a buyer? Would mess up all the speculation about Bumgarner and Smith 🙂

Quote from Alex Tamayo on July 17, 2019, 12:14 amI am so glad how well is Alex Dickerson playing, dont know how well or for how long he is gonna sustain that kind of production, but we could've used some of those numbers, and is exactly what we are lacking of at least in the OF, a left handed corner outfielder with some power who can take a walk, and we just gave him 19 ABs to realize he was done

Quote from fenn68 on July 18, 2019, 9:21 amBochy 4 ... Black 0! SF stays hot and sweeps COLO in COLO! COLO drops to last place in the NL West and SF jumps ahead of SD.
Likely the SF hot streak will end but they have a “easy” schedule for the remainder of July and could actually vault into the 2nd wild card slot by the end of the month (sort of the same scenario as SD).
Looking like a tough time for the GMs in the NL with about everyone having a legit chance for the playoffs (except NYM / Miami) and weight their view of the odds vs. the value of making that wild card to the fans, players, sponsors, ownership (both ego and revenue stream from contending to the bitter end).
Seeing the decisions maybe as interesting as the actual moves. One outcome is more “hold” than buy or sell.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 24, 2019, 7:00 amTrea Turner hits for the cycle for the second time in his career.
Meanwhile, we're paying Will Meyers millions to sit in our dugout.

Kemp, Myers, & Justin Upton trades all have ended up badly.
... but did lead to all the other trading, some of which worked out well. Preller has definitely done better as a Seller than a Buyer.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 24, 2019, 10:31 amGrandal has been a good player, as has Fried.
Elfin is still pitching, I believe. Bauer is in the league but so so. Ross is back in DC.
Yeah, most of the deals went sour but the Turner Meyers swap was the worst.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 24, 2019, 11:08 amI'm glad Grandal is not a Padre no matter how the deal worked out.
The rest of the players other than Turner aren't good enough to care one way or another really.
Having Tatis now makes not having Turner a little easier to bear also.
Of course having both would be better......but.

Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2019, 11:48 amUntil the new roster rules are in for 2020 probably no real way to know but:
the new active rosters will be set at 26 with a maximum of 13 pitchers ... that seems certain.
begs a question ... will that prohibit the use of position players as pitchers in extra inning games or blowouts?
Since they are also proposing the IL and minor league options be set at 15 days before recall to minimize those as vehicles for “resting” arms (and in the case of options ... costing a player ML service time / pay) .... will the combo change how staffs are used?
Conversely, if no prohibition on using position players ... and some team has a position player who may really be a pitcher can the 13 pitcher rule be gamed. Specifically thinking of the Padres and Guerra (historically a SS ... now a RP) As the 26 man on the roster he clearly could serve as the defensive bench option for SS/PR and could serve as the mop up RP (and much better than the normal position player option).
Interesting to see how this plays out.

Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2019, 12:05 pmFun with rules ... today in the Boston - TB game ... game under protest. Situation (remember this is the DH AL) ... TB has a LHRP in ... RH hitter comes up .... LHP moves to 1B (1B removed and RHP in) .... LH hitter comes up next and the first pitcher returns to the mound, new 1B.
LOOOOONG delay trying to figure out the rules concerning (I think) the subsequent batting order for TB. Is the DH gone ... either way where does the pitcher now hit and the new 1B in the line-up. Some question whether the pitcher could come back to pitch ... although happens before.
Half hour delay and a call to NY offices to get a ruling. This also highlighted the problem of no communication with the fans or the TV to explain what was going on and then the resolution. Game resume and as yet no idea of the real issue and the resolution. But a protest by Boston has been lodged.
