More specifically ...would the Angels need to designate Ohtani as a pitcher or position player for roster purposes?

Good call ... guess that would go for McKay in TB too.

Add the question of allowing pitchers to PH/PR or play as a position player ... fair to balance out the logic ... position players don’t pitch and pitcher only pitch.

That combo would be an issue in how both players and position players are used over the course of a game and/or a season ... and make a case at some point of not letting games go past maybe 10 innings.

Bring in the tie ... works in the soccer leagues ... 3 point for a win / 1 point for a tie / 0 for a loss ... most points win. Avoid boring the fans with long games and keeps the players fresher and healthier to play better ball over the course of the season.

Fun with rules ... today in the Boston - TB game ... game under protest. Situation (remember this is the DH AL) ... TB has a LHRP in ... RH hitter comes up .... LHP moves to 1B (1B removed and RHP in) .... LH hitter comes up next and the first pitcher returns to the mound, new 1B.

LOOOOONG delay trying to figure out the rules concerning (I think) the subsequent batting order for TB. Is the DH gone ... either way where does the pitcher now hit and the new 1B in the line-up. Some question whether the pitcher could come back to pitch ... although happens before.

Half hour delay and a call to NY offices to get a ruling. This also highlighted the problem of no communication with the fans or the TV to explain what was going on and then the resolution. Game resume and as yet no idea of the real issue and the resolution. But a protest by Boston has been lodged.

This ends next yr with whomever is on the mound needing to pitch to 3 hitters

The new roster formulation makes the dual player even more valuable.

Just a guess but they may just require a team to designate 13 pitchers and then no others can pitch. That would not hurt Ohtani and does provide some flexibility for PR / PH ... but the need may be reduced with going with 13 position players.

The pitcher limits (along with the 15 day IL / option minimum) may have the effect of starters going longer and more judicious use of the pen to ensure fresher arms late in games and for a run of games. On the flip side, in a long extra inning game or a blowout, a team may have to sacrifice an arm over a long stretch even when ineffective to save the rest of the pen. Hard to tell.

Fun video to watch ... https://www.mlb.com/orioles/news/orioles-outlast-angels-in-marathon-game

O's center fielder pitches 16th inning for the save

Wilkerson becomes first position player to ever record a save
Another fun fact from this game: Orioles improved to 1-62 when trailing after seven innings.

No one has really talked about this but....

We held on to Alex Dickerson for 4 injury plagued seasons....just as he gets healthy we give up on him and suddenly

he’s the Giants best hitter......AND we are looking for a LH hitting outfielder?

Were thinking about trading for Mazara?

Dont be overly concerned with a hot streak that will end when pitchers figure him out, or he gets hurt again. He is not a long term solution. Plus his defense is not good enough for playoff caliber team.

I am so glad how well is Alex Dickerson playing, dont know how well or for how long he is gonna sustain that kind of production, but we could've used some of those numbers, and is exactly what we are lacking of at least in the OF, a left handed corner outfielder with some power who can take a walk, and we just gave him 19 ABs to realize he was done

Actually I did mention it a few days ago, no one paid attention though, maybe he is not the long term solution (wich we don't know for sure) but we had him and like I said before we could have used some of those numbers he's been putting on, if anything his trade value would be higher as of now

This ends next yr with whomever is on the mound needing to pitch to 3 hitters

Does that mean 3 consecutive batters?

For example, Ohtani faces a lefty, swaps with a right handed pitcher who's playing RF, then moves back to the mound for another lefty?
