Around the League...non Padres

PreviousPage 34 of 224Next

I dont see how another soft tossing LHP could really help the full stable of similar SP already in the rotation of the Padres. Pitching is supposed to be about disrupting hitters timing and with Lauer, Luchessi, Strahm, and Margevicious all not really flame throwers, dont see why we would need another.

So you’re a no on Kuechel too then I take it?

Yes and no. No because of his stuff is too close to our current SP staff, and he will cost a draft pick, and I dont think he is an Ace anymore. Yes, because IMO moreso than Gio, he can be a bettor mentor to the younger kids and help them progress quicker. And unfortunately, this time in the season he wont be ready until the middle of May, and we could be buried by then, so whats the point.

Amazingly Khris Davis is currently hitting .247!

Not all that interested in Kuechel at this point. In part, with 30 teams that need SP and Kuechel not signing has to be a combination of teams not considering his ability (and future) anywhere near his asking price. IF his asking price dropped ... a number of real contenders likely would step in and offer a better deal than would make sense for the Padres. Would guess the bigger issue is the length of the deal although the AAV is still probably up there.

Getting somewhat close to the point where the draft compensation is lifted (after June draft) which may help his signing ... plus the "real" contenders who need SP might want to step up.

Side point .... (and this goes for a lot of players) ... not sure that just because a player is an older veteran who has had success he should be considered a potential mentor to the young players. No idea on Kuechel but sometimes older veterans are just don't have that skill set (or are jerks ... see Derek Norris).

Positive work by Strahm over this past two starts ... maybe the praise on his stuff / potential stemming back to last season has merit:

2 starts ... 13 innings .... 0.69 ERA ... 0.54 WHIP ... 0 BB!

Not so positive on the offense ... always hard to draw any conclusions based on short run results BUT just looking at the past 7 games:

1. The GOOD (or at least not BAD) based on OPS:

Tatis (1.266) ... 9 for 23

Myers (1.089) ...4 for 14

Reyes (.792) ... 5 for 22

Margot (.789) ... 5 for 19

Machado (.749) ... 6 for 19

May want more but not BAD performance

2. The BAD ... none

3. The UGLY (or really really BAD)

Renfroe (.435) ... 2 for 15

Hosmer (.374) ,,, 3 for 23

Kinsler (.353) ... 2 for 17

Hedges (.333) ... 2 for 15

Urias (.167) ... 0 for 10

Mejia (.000) ... 0 for 7

3/8ths of the offense is basically non-existent ... still "small sample size" but?

For those who may not know Khris Davis has hit exactly .247 every season since 2015.

That's FOUR straight seasons "and" he's hitting .247 right now as well.

What are those odds?

Peter Abraham took over the Boston Globe Sunday Notes from the late Nick Cafardo with a really great tribute column a couple of weeks ago.

A gem from his Notes during Spring Training:  In 128 games, Khris Davis has a spring training batting average of .247.
