Around the League...non Padres
Quote from LynchMob on February 4, 2019, 7:05 pmThis link from the @MadFriars twitter feed is FASCINATING!!!
Last week, former-Padre Chriss Nunn joined the Texas Rangers with the expectation he'll open the season pitching relief for their Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.

Quote from fenn68 on February 5, 2019, 7:31 amNot sure how this will affect our MLB TV watching but Disney (who now owns the FOX regional sports networks since the merger) is trying to sell those networks. MLB is one of the finalists for those networks.
If they are successful they may keep status quo ... but there could be impact on what is viewed nationally or regionally .... the network "personalities" with MLB inserting their choices over those who were FOX's choices ... beyond the actual games there could be impact on pre / post game packages and the other baseball supporting shows ... how do they address the non-baseball programming.
Just something to be looking at.

Quote from fenn68 on February 5, 2019, 7:46 amSounding as though Arenado is getting very close to signing a long term deal with the Rockies (he would have been a FA after 2019).
A lot of factors to consider but got to think looking at the past 2 FA winters ... and he will be 29 after next season ... a legitimate offer from the Rockies would really appeal allowing him life security with a club / city he seems to like is a smart move. Basically take life changing money now instead of taking all the risks of FA and MAYBE squeezing out a few extra bucks from a team he is less comfortable with.
Potential ripple effect with Rendon (WASH) who has said he would like to sign an extension with WASH. Rendon is also a FA after 2019 ... so a model extension could be on the table for WASH / Rendon to work off of. (Would probably take any last thought of Harper back to WASH off the table).
Major secondary effect is what that means to Machado. First, gives a framework for Machado to argue his contract. Second (and maybe more interesting), is that the belief that some teams that were holding off on Machado planning to aggressively pursue Rendon / Arenado next winter now potentially jumping into this year's Machado's race.
If this plays out .... a Machado signing may be a long way off as more teams need to get up to speed (and more money for Machado).

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 5, 2019, 11:00 amCertainly Arenado signing an extension and Rendon even hinting at staying in Wash would affect Machado.
If this occurs it would appear that Machado taking his time may have just paid off for him.
Do the Yankees get back involved?

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 5, 2019, 11:17 amEver wondered which MLB players would win in a race?
With this you can race any four players.
I picked Trea Turner,Spangenberg,Kiermeyer and Marte.
I really need something "Padre" to happen soon!

Quote from Booster SD on February 6, 2019, 6:43 amAccording to MLBTR it is possible that the NL could have the DH implemented as soon as this year!?! With 2020 as a more sincere reality. With that coming in play, it seems like Reyes could possibly have more value in SD than previously and more likely that you see Renfroe the more likely candidate to be shopped and shipped out IMO. Plus this also makes Naylor more sustainable in SD as well.
Never been a fan of the DH, but it seems like there is no avoiding it now. Just do it now! SD needs as much offense as possible.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 6, 2019, 7:15 amReyes/Naylor platoon at DH makes too much sense.....so probably will never happen.
Because Padres.
They would also have 1b and corner outfield and PH covered as bench players.

Have too much hope on both Reyes' and Naylor's bats to relegate them to platoon roles ... yet. Probably more hopeful that one takes a full time role and the other shows well and is a more valuable trade chip with 29 clubs now using the DH ... and teams need good hitters.
Even if their defense is less than hoped for in the OF ... if they both end up as real plus hitters .... might be willing to live with one as the DH and the other in the OF.
====
DH also makes a long term deal with a big bat (see Harper) less risky .... but also might interest some other NL teams to get in the mix ... either way better for Harper.

Quote from fenn68 on February 6, 2019, 8:14 amThe exchanged ideas for the Union and the owners is interesting (and I like a lot of them). Some could be in place for 2019 (probably not the DH) and some in 2020.
Should keep in mind the is a negotiation since some "benefit" the Union and some "benefit" the owners ... so impossible to cherry pick .. getting one may be dependent on another being approved. All have costs and consequences.
Then there is always the unintended consequences ... always a surprise on how teams change to changes.
Probably all tied together is the increase the active roster to 26 but reducing the September active roster 28 ... plus requiring a pitcher to pitch to 3 batter minimum and reducing mound visits to 3.
Does the 3 batter minimum kill the "value" of LHRP specialists or reduce the need for 13 pitchers? Meanwhile, does moving the active roster to 26 if there is a lesser need for RP promote more platooning LH/RH and would that result in more offense? Would the "extra" 1 or 2 position players (think PH) allow for more favorable match-ups for the offense ... and more offense? Would a 26 active roster reduce the players put on the DL for either short term (or fantom) injuries (maybe returning the DL to 15 days to curb gaming)?
A lot of ideas that would significantly improve the pace of play ... add offense ... add reduce some financial gaming by the teams.
Hopefully some will come to happen.
