Paul Skenes Is Baseball America’s 2024 MLB Rookie Of The Year

From No. 1 pick to No. 1 starter in less than a year.
That summarizes the rise of Pirates righthander Paul Skenes, who won a national championship with LSU in 2023, went first overall in the draft that year and then made his MLB debut on May 11 this year.
While the Pirates did not contend for a championship in 2024, it wasn’t for lack of a frontline ace. Skenes pitched as advertised as a rookie, going 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA, 170 strikeouts and 32 walks in 133 innings. He allowed just 10 home runs in 23 starts.
Even in a crowded National League rookie field, Skenes stood out. He turned in one of the strongest seasons by a rookie pitcher in the Wild Card Era, rivaling Spencer Strider, Kerry Wood, Brandon Webb, Roy Oswalt, Jose Fernandez and imported Japanese aces Hideo Nomo and Yu Darvish in terms of dominance.

Diamondbacks owner regrets signing Montgomery and said the it was a "horrible mistake". AJ was smart not to sign him.

Two non-HR hitters just went back to back against the Mets for a 2 -0 lead in the bottom of the 7th.   Ex-Padre Bauers only hit .199 for Milwaukee all year but did have 12 HRs; Frelick only had 2 HRs during the regular season.  Looking like a second home team is in the playoffs after the Wild Card round.

In what could have been his last AB as a Met, Pete Alonso hits a 3 run HR off Devin Williams!  It's not over until the fat lady sings!

Just watched Uecker's HOF acceptance speech. Of course it was very amusing but the thing that got me was all the HOF'ers behind him who have since passed.

So many childhood heroes......

This is not the same as the NL Rookie of the Year which Merrill can still win.

Stolen comment from another forum 🙂

The Yankees have never beaten the Tigers in the playoffs.

NEVER!

Of course, as they were both members of the AL East for quite a while, they couldn't make the playoffs at the same time.

The Tigers beat them in the division series in 2006 and 2011, and the LCS in 2012.

Bring 'em on!

Of course, the Tigers have to get past the Indians first, which will be quite difficult.

Luis Tiant passes at 83. He was not only a top MLB pitcher but as fun to watch as any I have seen with his multiple delivery styles from a short stocky body. High squeaky voice and a big cigar made his interviews must see.

Mets beat Phillies. Mets lead series 2-1.
