So here's an interesting little tidbit.
Mark Walter,who is the majority owner and Chairman of the Los Angeles dodgers,is buying up the entire downtown area of my small sleepy port City of St Marys,Ga.
He purchased an extremely exclusive animal conservation/resort called White Oak Plantation about 15 miles from here on the Florida side of the border and I guess fell in love with our old Town.OR,he just sees a money making opportunity.
Probably will be good for our community as he has a great track record of good investments.....just a weird coincidence to this Padre fan.

No Padres are finalists for a Gold Glove…..but Juan Soto is.

I saw that. I thought for sure Merrill would be considered. I find it interesting and weird that Manny won two for the Orioles and none for the 5 years he has been with the Padres. Profar and Tatis have made many outstanding plays and both have robbed HRs.

Not a fan of defensive stats but they are used a lot to make the finalist list for golden gloves. To that extent in the NL::
Merrill ranked 9th in dWAR, 47th in DRS, 6th in OAA. Some commentary that Merrill made all the routine plays but not enough of those exceptional plays that generated DRS/OAA. Keep in mind that this is a full season award and the early part of the season was a bit of a learning period.
As for Machado, he only played 2/3 of a full season at 3B (remember a lot of DH early). He ranked 13th in dWAR, 12th in DRS, 30th in OAA.
Both are quality defensive players but we see them every day and don’t see the other contenders … so stats (good or bad) is at least neutral.

Soto by the eye test is an embarrassing choice for a gold glove BUT stat-wise as an AL RF he is actually in the top 3 if one criteria is playing at least 1000 innings in RF. There was only 5 AL RF with at least 1000 innings and Soto is 2nd or 3rd in the stats. Says a lot about the other RF being poor bs Soto being good.

Dodger legend Fernando, "El Toro" Valenzuela passed away. He played for almost 3 seasons for the Padres and was one of the best pitchers in MLB history.

Terribly sad news. A great ambassador for the game of baseball to his native Mexico.
And even as a Padre fan, I got swept up in Fernando-mania. I was especially chuffed when he pitched for the Pads.
Sad news indeed.

Yeah, I just don't get that.
In any othee era, Soto is a joke of a right fielder. The Ellis Valentine's, Dewey Evans's, Billy Williams's, David Winfields, Dave Parkers.....those guys were LEGIT!
Has there ever been a highlight of Soto ever throwing anyone out at home? Or a homerun robbery? Diving into the stands? If so, I must have missed them.
Hard to believe there aren't 3 defenders better than him.

Soto proving my point tonight. A GOOD RF makes the plays and the Duds are most likely still scoreless tonight.
He's too slow, no burst/suddeness, bad range, weak arm. Helluva bat though.
