Quote from sportwarrior on July 29, 2024, 11:49 amDodgers take part in a somewhat interesting 3 team trade, netting them Edman and Kopech. Lost Vargas and a couple prospects in the process. Fedde and Pham headed to the Cards.
It's a little wild that the Cards only seem to have given up Edman in exchange for Fedde and Pham.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 1, 2024, 6:53 pmWas watching Walker Buehler on his rehab assignment against our El Paso team today and he was not very impressive. With Kershaw getting pounded on Wednesday and May not coming back this year, I can see why the Dodgers needed to trade for Flaherty. You have to remember that even though the Dodgers got swept by us they were without Mookie, Freeman and Muncy. Also, they apparently expect to have a healthy Yamamoto back sometime soon and maybe a RP or 2.
I think if we get back a healthy Musgrove and Darvish as well as an impact bat in Tatis, Jr. it's possible we may have a horserace down the stretch for the NL West. Odds still favor LA, but the Padres are feisty and confident enough to push LA to the limit.

He's played 41 games total in the 2nd half of each of the last 4 seasons. Wild.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 5, 2024, 7:28 pmIt's still early in James Wood's MLB career but it is going pretty much how most people predicted, i.e, power tool over hit tool. He's been a dependable RBI producer but only 2 HRs so far and a 33.9% strike out rate. That was the only red flag in his tool box but if he stays in the .250-.260 range and bombs 30-40 HRs a year, most teams will take that tradeoff.
Nonetheless, I like our guy better for what he brings to the game every day in every way - he looks like a real role model for young Padres fans. Go Padres1

Quote from 84padres on August 7, 2024, 5:21 amThe biggest part of the Soto trade that I didn't like was including both of our possible OFs in the deal . I'm not sure if Hassell will ever become a decent MLBer but remember that no one was predicting Merrill for CF . It's worked out very well so far but I wish we still had Hassell .

Quote from Randy Manese on August 7, 2024, 9:23 amHassell becomes Rule 5 eligible this December unless the Nat's put him on their 40 man. He's doing better this year average-wise but his extra base hit % is below 20%. Last year, in his first year at AA, he got the rate up to 25% but batting average plummeted to .225. Still can get on base, has some speed to steal a base, but ratings I've seen have him as a fringe major league prospect, 5th OF or possibly a 4th OF, since his defense is sound but not spectacular, even in CF.
I also thought he would be much at this point in his career, but you can never tell with 18 year olds - look at how Salas is struggling offensively at Ft. Wayne.
