Around the League...non Padres

Yesterday a person was killed by gunshot at the Xolos Stadium (parking lot I think), my dad has season tickets but I haven't gone in like 6 years, the reason, exactly that, you don't feel safe there, I side por outside the venue, so, that reminds me that despite our team struggles, I have to appreciate that we can go to the ballgame and have a nice time in a safe environment.

Brent Honeywell pitching for the dodgers today

River Ryan who we traded for Matt Beatty just went 5 1/3 and only gave up 1 unearned run against the Giants in his major league debut.

River Ryan was a two way player at little North Carolina Pembroke college and drafted in the 11th round, #340, by the San Diego Padres in 2021.  He played 12 games for the ACL Padres as a DH hitting .308 with a .785 OPS and his bat was more advanced than his pitching.  At the end of spring training 2022, Padres were trying to fill a void at LH hitter and Matt Beaty was coming off his best year with the Dodgers, hitting a respectable .270, a .765 OPS and a 114 wRC+, i.e., 14% above league average production for his position; not a good defensive player but seemingly a solid bat.

Give the Dodgers credit for seeing the long-term potential of Ryan as a pitcher and developing him accordingly.  Give the Padres credit for identifying the underlying skills of Ryan and drafting him where they did.  In retrospect, this was a bust for the Padres as Beaty fought off injuries and non production and his best year in baseball turned out to be his best year with the Dodgers.  Ryan has fought through some minor injuries and early location issues but now seems to have the ceiling of at least a #3 starter.  Padres still looking for LH bats but if you peek down in their lower minors you are going to find some pitchers whose stories are much the same as Ryans - maybe even more convoluted.  Ryan debuted at age 25; I believe some of these pitchers will be in the bigs before then.

Beatty seemed like a solid platoon bat who was some what a victim of the Dodger's depth at the time. I'm not really upset about trading a lottery ticket for that. In retrospect it didn't work out and it hurts more since it was a deal with the Dodgers. We have gotten burned by a couple of these types of deals. Emmanuel Clase for Brett Nicholas who never played a game for us. Matt Brash for 6 innings of Taylor Williams. Brent Rooker for Cam Gallagher who lasted about 5 weeks in AAA before we DFAd him. As much as we talk about some of the big trades that didn't work out, these type of trades sting a little bit more in my opinion.

The Dodgers first DFA'd LHP James Paxton and now traded him to the BoSox for a minor leaguer. He was a solid pitcher early in the season.

Former Padre Mike Clevinger back on the IL and out for the season.

The White Sox announced this afternoon that veteran right-hander Mike Clevinger will miss the remainder of the 2024 season following disc replacement surgery in his neck, which he’s scheduled to undergo on August 1. The 33-year-old has been on the injured list due to elbow inflammation since late May but started a rehab assignment at the Triple-A level last month.

It seems that he always on the IL.

With Jazz Chisholm now in NY, does Grisham become expendable?

Obviously bad offensively but in the field and on the bases does he upgrade our 4th OF position?

And what's left on his 2024 contract?

Drew Thorpe had his first poor outing yesterday, but had been been outstanding in his first five or six starts, entering yesterday’s game with an ERA of 3.  I think he’ll be a solid starter.
