Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 19, 2024, 10:18 amYan Gomes was DFAd by the Cubs. We should probably give him a minor league deal after he clears just to stop someone else from using him against us later in the season. 4-11 with 2 HRs against us and 10-80 with 0 against the rest of the league.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 25, 2024, 6:25 pmBraves postponed again.
They've now played 76 games…tonight is the Padres 84th.
They are going to have to play a bunch of double headers this summer.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 1, 2024, 3:40 pm3 principle pieces in Juan Soto trade in 2022 are on the field today against the Mets - 2 very high #1s and a #2 draft pick that many teams passed on. It s a trade-off for a generational hitter and a 1b bat that got us deep into the playoffs and it really is those 3 aforementioned players that will always be the heart of the trade. Soto should have been pivotal in the 2023 run for a pennant but he was not but I kind of like the return for Soto that got us King, Higgy, a couple of second tier pitchers that have contributed and another pitcher who helped us acquire Cease. Win now was the theme then and win now is the theme now - when the window of opportunity presents itself, you have to go for it because the future is never promised in baseball or life.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 2, 2024, 3:47 amWe (AJ) also expected to have Tatis for the 2nd half of ‘22 and the Playoffs.
Things may have been different if we had.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 2, 2024, 11:59 amThere are certainly some moves I wish we could take back with the benefit of hindsight. One of the ongoing debates in my house is whether or not we would be better off if AJ had never made a single trade. Having said that I would much rather see us be aggressive in pursuit of winning than what we have been for most of my time as a Padres fan. Outside of 1998 I don't think I've ever felt better about our chances than I have these past few years. Being the team that trades for big time players certainly beats being the team that use to always have to trade them away before they got expensive. I also don't think AJ gets enough credit for identifying the talent that lets us make these moves in the first place. We had nearly a 20 year run where Logan Forsythe might have been our best 1st round pick. We spent a long time as one of the worst drafting teams in baseball. Now it seems like we are adding impact talent year after year.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 2, 2024, 1:50 pmYou can't look at any trade in a vacuum.
If we don't trade Soto for instance we don't have Profar in LF and there's a very good chance Grisham is our CF and Merrill starts the season in the Minors. After the injuries to Joe and Yu...thank goodness for Cease and King.Even Higgy has unexpectedly helped us win a few games.
My hope is that Niebla can help Vasquez and Brito before next season.
Brito had some great outings as a Yankee....we just haven't seen the same.....yet?

Quote from Randy Manese on July 2, 2024, 2:24 pmWe should not minimize the impact of ownership on drafts and trades. Those many years we had poor drafts in a row (especially at the top) can likely be traced to ownership not willing to put out the bonus money to sign away top prospects from their college commitments or skip another year in college. Similarly, ownership may have pushed for trades when the player(s) they wanted to acquire were going to cost the only players with long-term potential on the roster. When ownership loosened the purse strings our said go after the third or fourth option to make the team stronger, trades could happen but only with the approval of ownership.
In the last couple of years, the Padres have gotten better at identifying talent from almost all possible places - international, undrafted high school or college free agents, major and minor league free agents, draft picks taken at lower levels of the draft, and trades, irrespective of how painful it is to give up potentially solid or better major leaguers who will probably need 3-4 years to reach their potential. Such is the tradeoff, and I for one, enjoy going to park or watching a game in recent years where my team is going to come out on top the majority of the time - much different from so many years where we only had a wing and a prayer.
