Going to make his FA winter at the very least “interesting” with that open issue.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 24, 2023, 12:59 pmHometown guy Stephen Strasburg is retiring from baseball. Signed a $245M contract prior to the 2020 season, and has pitched just over 31 innings under that contract. Thats over $7.8M per inning, good pay if you can get it. Im sure the contract was insured, but still...ouch!!
Its really too bad that his career has been shut down early due to injuries.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 29, 2023, 2:40 pmAccording to MLBTR the LAA have just cleaned house in order to save money, let veterans possibly make a playoff team roster, and probably give some MiL some playing time by cutting 5 ML veterans including our old buddy Renfroe.
SD should probably do the same?

That is just what I was suggesting on a different forum.
All the FA to be (except Snell and Hader who will get QO … and the Padres end up with a Comp Pick). Sanchez, Cooper, Gamel, Garcia, and R.Hill should be considered … maybe Sanchez and Cooper get claimed and the Padres save a few dollars and they get a shot at a playoff run. Get a shot to look at a few prospects … at least give them a ‘thank you” for their service.
Players will get paid for the season one way or the other … so if claimed great for them … otherwise a month vacation and gives the agent a 2 month run at trying to find a new team before FA can do that.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 29, 2023, 3:41 pmThe only issue I would have with releasing Sanchez and Cooper would be if it created bad feelings towards SD, and prevents SD from resigning for next season.
I think both would be good pieces for next season. Sanchez as C #2, and Cooper a nice bench piece.
Otherwise, let them see if they can get onto a playoff team.

Or they could be thanking SD for giving them the opportunity to showcase their skill on a contender / playoff team. Might have a bit to do with how the Padres would communicate the move to them … basically good for their career and are still interested in re-signing them after the season. Need to be a good spin doctor.
I really doubt they would do that with Sanchez … not getting much pay in the last month but he appears to be a key contributor to Snell’s run for the Cy Young which would be good PR for the Padres.

Quote from sportwarrior on August 29, 2023, 4:02 pmI'd hope that any discussion about whether the Padres follow the Angels would start with each affected player. Let them choose if they want to be released at this point, especially if the cost savings won't affect our luxury tax / draft penalties at all.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 29, 2023, 7:22 pmI wonder if the league will step in and do something about the Angels situation. They can't be very happy to see such a blatant mass salary dump of productive players right before the deadline to be on playoff rosters. The MLBPA can't be real happy about it either.

Sure seems like a new trend … LAA was the showcase team with 6 players but NYY (Bader), Mets (Donaldson), CWS (Clevinger), others all have taken the same path.
Think all the players involved will be FA after the season … all will still get paid from one team or another … all get a chance to improve their FA status if they get selected by a playoff team and perform well … so, not sure the union would have much an issue.
Not sure on how MLB views the moves. They could see it as a good move by putting better players in the playoffs that in turn might make for a better product (and more interest) for the games. On the other hand, probably not thrilled by teams who have played 5 months with one roster getting any major upgrade at the last minute. Sort of why they set a date for the trade deadline and freeze rosters at SEP 1 … this sort of circumvents the objectives of those two dates.
Don’t want to disadvantage any team wanting to put a player on waivers to potentially save money or to open a roster slot in SEP to get a non-roster prospect added. Hypothetically don’t see the league blocking the Padres putting Garcia on waivers (FA to be) because they want to add non-roster Kopps.
If the issues falls to good teams getting better via waiver claims … I guess they could eliminate the waiver process after the trade deadline (teams would just release players) but as a FA a player still could sign with any team (and the union would object preventing FA signings). Also, in the waiver process the player goes to the team with the best claim position but as a FA can go to any team … so a powerhouse such as ATL could sign a top player that via waivers would go to a pursuing team like the CUBS Lessening the competitive balance for the playoffs … playoff stretch run.
Does not feel right but the players are not hurt (some may be in a better situation), the team putting the player on waivers is better off (maybe lower payroll and get a chance at viewing call-up for the future), and could argue that the lowest positioned playoff contender gets the opportunity to improve for the playoff run making completion better and increasing fan interest. I guess if anyone is disadvantaged it would be the top teams seeing their challengers getting better (in theory).
It will be interesting to see how many of these players put on waivers actually get claimed or those who pass through waivers get signed as FA. A waiver claim would get the player on the roster by SEP 1 and eligible for the playoffs but if they go through waivers and sign as a FA (at a fraction of league minimum) would only be there for SEP and not the playoffs.
