Around the League...non Padres
Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 30, 2023, 9:35 amDonaldson and Carrasco aren't getting claimed. Clevinger probably would have been traded at the deadline if he had been healthy. Bader could be claimed, but he's struggling through another injury plagued season. There's a pretty big difference between those moves and the Angels dumping 3 guys that they picked up at the deadline plus a dominant reliever and potentially useful bat.
I get why the Angels are doing it. It makes sense for them to try to sneak back under the luxury tax line. From the league perspective this has the chance to drastically change the NL wildcard race and playoff picture. I would imagine the teams higher up in the standings will be upset if any of these guys help lower ranked teams make a run without them getting a shot at them.
From the players union side I think they would only be upset by the guys that were traded being put on waivers so soon after. Even if it lets them go to a contender the union probably won't be happy to see players change teams again after the deadline in a situation they have no control over. We don't really know how each individual player might feel about it either. Overall it just seems like a situation that could stir up a lot of controversy.

Quote from sportwarrior on August 30, 2023, 11:33 amA shame we couldn't have won just a few more games over the last month. We'd be in a position to think about selecting some of these guys. I wouldn't mind Lopez AND Moore added to the bully, with Giolito and/or Clev in the rotation and Gruchek off the bench or playing LF with Soto full time DH.
Hell, maybe we say f*ck it and do it anyway. The chemistry is already a mess and we're not likely to sink below a major payroll tax threshold. Let's just get drunk and roil the roster, baybeee!

A cautionary tale on exit velocity.
It seems more like a cautionary tale about injuries and aging to me. The quality of Donaldson's contact isn't the issue. The issue is that he doesn't make enough contact anymore. To give Verducci some credit he does get into it a little bit in the actual article. I guess Josh Donaldson got old and his body started failing him doesn't quite have the same ring to it in the clickbait age we live in. It's disappointing to see a piece like that from someone whose work I have generally enjoyed over the years.

Agree ... age gets them all as bat speed, eyes, strength decline and injuries increase and last longer. Should not be a surprise to anyone yet is still is to some. A team might get lucky with a player that is productive a bit longer than another ... but in the end the same result.
Does frustrate me a bit the narrative coming out of teams who want to justify signing older players or long term deals that run to the player's late 30s early 40s ... usually saying they keep themselves in great shape and have the skills that will play even in their latter years ... more often wrong on that. Father Time is not listening and will have the player break down on his timetable. Take Trout who was all world playing every day ... at around 30 that body started to give way ... no one was thinking that would happen.
A bit of a cautionary tale when we project Machado, Darvish, Bogaerts, and Cronenworth. Actually we are beginning to see some warts with Machado ... plays every day / plays thru injury but 10 more years and last year we saw some nagging injuries and this year seeing some injuries maybe slowing down (although not really being discussed). Manny is a big, muscled player .... will that really play in his late 30s?
For me, would not build a roster with multiple main pieces in their late 30s.

Quote from fenn68 on August 31, 2023, 11:27 amA bit of a head scratch move by the Guardians. Keep in mind they are 5 games behind MINN for the AL Central and 11.5 out of the Wild Card … and are not the most financially healthy franchise. Yet the picked off waivers Giolito, Moore, and Lopez … added to payroll for a long long shot run for the playoffs. Can’t give them QO after the season as all are going to be FA.
For the fans, is this that make every effort to win … fight to the end? If so, I guess good on Cleveland since it is a short term commitment for minimal money.
For the conspiracy theory folks like me … could the Guardians be claiming these players at the behest of one of the top teams to prevent a contender with an earlier draft priority from claiming them making the contender stronger? Could there be some “under the table” deal that will send a prospect or two to Cleveland in the off season? Maybe questionable move but also maybe not prohibited.
Nah, just trying to win it … maybe

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Julio Urías was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence charges late last night, an officer with the LAPD tells ESPN.
Urias, 27, was booked late Sunday and released early this morning on $50,000 bond.

WHOA! Dude's bad season just got A LOT worse.
I assume he joins Trevor Bauer on the Ex Dodgers list, if he is of course proven to be guilty.
