Around the League...non Padres
Quote from fenn68 on June 10, 2023, 11:50 amAlso took a look at the Soto deal ... clearly a TBD evaluation in the long run.
Soto and Bell for Gore, Abrams, Hassell, Wood, Susana, and Voit. So, a ton of elite prospects for 2 1/3 years of a mega star (as viewed at the time of the deal) and during a playoff run that was successful (that does have value).
Soto is currently at 269/421/481 (902) and even better over the past month+ supporting a playoff push. Bell was a dud and gone via FA. These two for:
Gore (24) LHP ... ML 12 starts 3.60 ERA ... good performance
Abrams (22) SS ... ML 223/271/381 (652) ... has to develop more otherwise a journeyman
Hassell (21) OF ... AA 252/355/319 (674) ... young for AA but power seems to be lacking as he rises
Wood (20) OF .. A+/AA 280/369/555 (925) ... may turn out to be the key (in 2-3 years)
Susana (19) RHP ... A 27.2 innings, 3.58 ERA ... a long way to go
Voit ... released
Soto is hitting as advertised NOW and the Padres are all in for winning NOW ... so Preller in a sense is getting what he targeted for immediate success.
The "prospects" are all TBD in the long run with Gore the one so far making a quality contribution in the ML. Probably can't make the call for 3-4 more years but odds are that the majority do not become signifiant ML regulars.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on June 10, 2023, 4:33 pmI mean LAD traded Alvarez for garbage and O Cruz (Pitt) for garbage.. and 1 is a top 5 player in baseball and the other a 6-7 SS that hits balls harder than anyone (on the shelf in 23).. and is a rising Superstar .. AJP for all his shortcomings hasn't traded anyone like that (Woods could be) but Soto is a Mega Star so the risk (Woods becomes a HOF) is still worth it for the 3 Cracks at a WS or 2.. even if he leaves after 2024...

I didn't realize only 291 men have ever achieved this level of success. Our very own Nelson Cruz is one of them.
Props on a very successful career to Andrew McCutchen!

Interesting speculation on a pure hypothetical of a Soto trade to NYY (not based on any rumor of discussions).
What was interesting to me is a) two podcasters from NY … who actually seem rationale compared to most … would identify Soto as a quality target for the NYY; b) their view of Soto was still quite high as a player and did focus on his OBP complementing the NYY (Judge); c) had a proposal that recognize the lower trade value with one less control year than when the Padres made their trade; d) suggested NYY giving up 2 highly rated prospects in Volpe and Dominguez. In 2022 they were the NYY #1 and #2 and MLB #5 and #39.
Since this is pure speculation by podcasters … the specific prospects are irrelevant … but what to focus on is that there could be a strong market for Soto still.
Even their assessment of the Padres was good … though the Padres could spend the money to extend Soto seems to want to test FA.
Bottom line this podcast gives an East Coast view of the current value of Soto … keeping the idea of the Padres moving him a viable consideration.

Yeh, Wil has had a terrible season with health and on-field production and at 33 his future is in the past.
Nice guy and like watching him play.

Quote from 3fingersplit on June 20, 2023, 2:07 pmI have always felt that Wil got royally screwed over by Andy Green in so many ways. Loved his "old school" approach of never using batting gloves and when he was locked in at the plate he owned the right center gap.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 20, 2023, 3:51 pmIf he wants to come back after he clears waivers I would welcome it. At league minimum it couldn't hurt to see if he could give you a little more than the likes of Carpenter, Cruz and Dixon.
