Around the League...non Padres

PreviousPage 172 of 224Next

My youngest sons name is Gehrig.

What a player….what a man.

OPS for the Rays Lineup today 1-9

.980

.924

.886

.852

.905

.805

.797

.679

.756

Not a huge contract superstar in the lineup.

I mean….why can’t anyone else do this?

What are they doing exactly?

It can’t just be the hitting coaches?

I know EVERYBODY is frustrated and some of us are turning the game off or drinking some bourbon to get through the game but even though it’s not MLB…the college World Series is happening for both men and women and the games have been great. It’s kind of fun to just watch a game and not be emotionally involved.

The women for OU (University of Oklahoma) are in the finals and riding a 51 game winning streak and beat Stanford today in extra innings 4-2…these teams playing have so much enthusiasm and seem to really execute all facets of the game…it’s a nice change.

51 game winning streak…I would settle for a 5 game winning streak for our Padres

Interesting article about new technology and "tipping" pitches.

It would seem we may need to do better at identifying pitches.

While it seems our pitchers do a good job of "not" tipping.

At least based on our production so far.

DeGrom to have TJ Surgery .... at his age (and injury history) missing the rest of 2023 and 2024 might be career ending for a great pitcher who has had the unfortunate issue of ongoing injuries.

Tough break for Texas who put big money into signing him.

Can anyone tell me again why AJ traded for Adam Frazier back in 2021? Were we not laden with infielders that year?

The reason I come back to this trade so often is watching Jack Suwinski's number continually climb, while Grisham continues to struggle.

And now that Nola has fallen off the the proverbial cliff, AJ's trades by and large, are just bad.

I understand you win some( Tatis!, Darvish, Musgrove) and lose some( every other trade? Is that too harsh?), and sometimes, both teams come out okay( I'm trying to think of one?)

I guess what I'm trying to suggest is that it would be nice to see some of these guys that you lot have been watching since even before the draft, make their way through our system, and to San Diego.

Don't know how the rest of you guys feel, but I still look at how "our" guys are doing: Quantril, Abrams, Gore, Naylor, Elfin, Turner, Renfroe, Ruiz, Arias, Urias, France, Munoz, Brash, Suwinski, etc.....

While it's cool to have new, expensive toys( Soto, Bogaerts), I'm just not sure either was necessary.

But hey, it's not my money and I would definitely like to see the Padres bring a championship to San Diego. So if Mr. Seidler believes in what AJ is doing, that's his perogative. Just hope his trust is rewarded.

July 2021 the Padres were making their playoff push and Frazier (LHH) was an All-Star who was a quality hitter (think OPS over .800 at the time) for several years. Think the idea was to put Frazier at 2B (OF sometimes) move Cronenworth to 1B and bench Hosmer (always a good plan). On paper that was a good plan BUT Frazier just failed (sort of the 2021 Ryan Ludwick).

AT THE TIME not a bad deal considering the push for the playoffs ... but as often happens  the outcome was bad. Actually Frazier has been bad since the trade in SEA and BALT. Opens up the question as to his performance in PITT was more a product of playing in PITT and the NL Central?

As for the prospects dealt ... Milano and Marcano have yet (or may never) pan out. Suwinski is going fine but looking the scouting / ranking of him as a prospect when a Padres ... fringe with power offset by a high K rate. So at the time he was still a risk as a prospect ... but have to pay if wanting to pursue a payoff slot in the current year. Of course, using the Frazier model, is Suwinski's performance inflated by playing in PITT and the NL Central?

Having said all that I was a fan of Suwinski as a prospect, so was bummed when he was moved at the time.

Side: I guess these trade deadline moves sometimes are beneficial (this goes for all of MLB) but not really so sure that the moves end up being the catalyst to get a into the playoffs and therefore unless the player was added on the cheap (that usually means a rental) I would question any trade deadline move. We seem to be underestimating the transition process for team A to team B resulting in lower performance initially ... see Soto, Bell, Frazier, Ludwick ... note hitters.

Pretty sure at the trade deadline we will begin hearing the chorus calling for all sorts of trades to add ... given the histories ... might just want to stand pat unless a fringe bench piece emerges for a non-prospect.

I've always believed that AJ made that trade thinking he was going to be able to move Hosmer and it just didn't work out. It definitely hurts seeing  Suwinkski and Marcano begin to emerge as at least strong platoon players.

I also check in on how some of our former guys are doing semi regularly. It's hard not to play the what if game. AJ has definitely traded a lot of talent. To his credit he's also got a few clear wins in his trade history and brought a lot of excitement to the team. It's hard not to wonder what could of been with a little more patience added to Seidler's checkbook though.

No one gets all the trades right ... and hard to fully value the conditions at the time of the trade that made it doable. Plus always the focus on the bad trades (the players who got away) is a norm.

So, did look at the current SD pitching staff ... and they actually reflect some good deals by Preller:

8/22 ... Hader for Rogers (LHRP), Lamet (RHP), Ruiz (CF), and Gasser (LHP) ... Hader elite ML closer vs. Ruiz an upcoming ML CF (but who got moved from MILW to OAK ... so not that well thought of by MILW) and still the unknown of Gasser ... think the only one still in the MILW organization.

1/21 ... Musgrove for Lucchesi (LHP), Bednar (RP), Head (CF), Fellows (RHP), Cruz (LHP) ... only Bednar has produced (but injured)

12/20 ... Snell for Hunt (C), Wilcox (RHP), Patino (RHP), Mejia (C) ... like or not like Snell his work for the Padres has been significant of more value than the departed ... Mejia is in the ML but remember a large number of posters on this site just wanted to dump him with poor defense and not hitting.

12/20 ... Darvish for Z.Davies (RHP), Preciaco (SS), Mena (OF), Caissio (OF), Santana (SS) ... Davies has bounced around and the prospects have yet to arrive.

7/20 ... Hill for Cordero (OF) and Bolanos ... Hill has been an effective ML innings eater ... Cordero has been on the fringe with multiple teams and Bolanos ended up as a non factor

So, Padres traded for five key arms on the 2023 Padres ... gave up little ... would look at Preller going 5 for 5 in winning the trades (also helps Siedler was willing to pay the salaries).
