Around the League...non Padres
Quote from Randy Manese on September 10, 2021, 12:26 amIt was highly unlikely that the Padres' could have gotten Renfroe to come back to San Diego as a free agent given that he basically was run out of town by the wrath of Padres fans who consistently saw him fail in the clutch to deliver the big hits we expected of him. Tampa got nothing for him and most thought that, at best, he would be the short side of a platoon facing only LH starting pitchers. Happy for him - heard he was a good guy and a good teammate but always had that low on-base percentage with led to a lot of zeroes on the board when he wasn't smashing those light tower home runs. Look for guys with OBP of 375+ to populate the Padres' lineup in the future - maybe as early as mid-2022. Here are a few with their OBP stats for their minor league career: Abrams - 398; Hassell - 407; Angeles - 387; Valenzuela - 393; and just slightly below, Campusano - 370.

Quote from fenn68 on September 10, 2021, 11:06 amFormer Padre gone in the Snell trade with real MLB potential:
Top Rays pitching prospect Cole Wilcox underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday this week, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter link). That’ll quite likely wipe out his entire 2022 campaign.

Quote from fenn68 on September 10, 2021, 11:14 amRenfroe ... oops!
Red Sox right fielder Hunter Renfroe controversially claimed in a WEEI radio appearance with Lou Merloni and Christian Fauria that Major League Baseball had told the Red Sox to “stop testing and just treat the symptoms” (Twitter link with audio). Asked in a follow-up to confirm that MLB had instructed the Red Sox to stop testing, Renfroe replied with a simple, “Yes.”
Both Major League Baseball and the Red Sox moved quickly to refute the claim. Julian McWilliams and Kate McInerny of the Boston Globe cited a league spokesperson who called Renfroe’s claim “completely wrong and inaccurate,” while the team issued a statement indicating it has “been following MLB’s COVID-19 protocols all season long.” The Red Sox added that they have “continued to test and [the league’s] medical staff has been very supportive.”
Note that the Red Sox have had a very large number of COVID cases to which Sale was just added.
IF Renfroe was right ... would cause a major conspiracy discussion of MLB trying to bolster Boston chances for the playoffs (and in turn better TV advertising revenues / viewership from a major market). IF Renfroe was "misinformed" ... a very bad case of "foot in mouth" for Renfroe. Either way, why would Renfroe even comment?

Quote from fenn68 on September 11, 2021, 5:57 amAlthough the NL last WC slot appears to be a SD v CINN with SD having one less loss putting them slightly ahead … the AL WC should make for an very exciting battle considering:
63 losses: Boston; NYY; Toronto
64 losses: Oakland; Seattle
One game in the loss column separating five teams for two WC spots … and the three AL East contenders true rivals … should be intense.

Boston Red Sox – Garrett Richards has taken well to his bullpen assignment (20.2 IP, 2 ER — though he also allowed 5 unearned in one particularly ugly outing) and the Red Sox have rewarded him with some higher-leverage work. He closed out victories both Saturday and Sunday, with the latter coming in a save situation. We’ll slide him on to the hierarchy for now and see how Boston continues to deploy its pen going forward.
Updated hierarchy: *Ottavino | Robles | Richards.
* = closer-by-committee
Chicago Cubs – Rowan Wick posted a forgettable outing on Sunday, entering with a four-run lead and allowing five baserunners (including three walks) before Michael Rucker came on to bail him out. It was Rucker’s first save of the season.
Hierarchy remains: Wick | Heuer | Morgan.

Basebal IQ on 💯:
It was believed Yuli Gurriel left 3rd base early on a Sac Fly for the Astros, Kyle Tucker intentionally got picked off and in a rundown.
The result was them D-Backs no longer being able to appeal to 3rd base because of the rundown.
