Around the League...non Padres

Would he be of any benefit? And at what cost to the 40 man? Is he an upgrade on O'Grady?

Doubt it … only 29 but has not had a good season since 2018 … not a power bat … poor fielder … was making $11MM and has 7 years service time.

He may get some action as a FA over the winter but good chance the offers will be minor league contracts with an invitation to ST with a release option by Jun 1. (Don’t see him bumping anyone off the current Padres’ 26 active if thinking helping in 2021).

Padres probably have some tough calls to make the 40 man as it is for the winter (and good chance O’Grady is not among them). They may offer Polanco (or someone similar) minor league deals with an eye on someone for a OF bench role, LHH … at the end of ST should be a couple of pitchers returning to the 60 day IL to make room since their TJ surgeries would be only at the 12 month mark.

Should add that the fans in PITT were really on his case and showered him with boos this season.

Given the fact they signed Arrieta and that lasted 3-4 innings and Hudson doesn't look like he has much left in the tank......kick the tires and light the fires.....could he be worse than some of the guys in the bullpen now ?

With Tim Hill the only Left Handed option in the "pen" right now and Strahm still on the 10 day and Pomeranz on the 60 day, I would at least take a look......otherwise your options would be Camarena or if they put Weathers in the bullpen

Sadly Hand had a miserable July (WASH) … Toronto took the deadline gamble he would regain his earlier form and in AUG (TOR) he was worse. Both ERAs over 7.00.

Add that the waiver claim would cost $1.9MM in remaining salary.

I guess if he cleared waivers could get him for only pro-rated league minimum (if he did not prefer another club) but taking a guy for one month (critical) coming off two ugly months is not worth the gamble … but neither was Arrieta.

I respectfully disagree, this is where he "relearned" his chops. Bringing him in for a minimal amount of salary and take a chance. If we can get him to rebound, well worth the $1.9M. And if he doesnt, then really, what is another $1.9M with where SD is sitting in salary.

Roll the dice, pull no stops, we are close, and every bit could help.

I could see a claim to get a LHRP in the mix as a veteran gamble (Pomeranz out - Strahm likely out - Hill getting burned out from over use- Camarena / Ramirez not good) ... option Weathers to AAA and someone like Ramirez (in AAA) released. Still would leave room on the expanded 28 man roster to add both Lamet (as a RP) and Arrieta (or one of anyone else in AAA if Arrieta is wanting as a starter).

Think only Weathers has been worse than Hand in the past two months ... and Weathers was a starter ... so may be a real long shot for immediate success. On the other hand the Padres did add a miserable Arrieta and dealt for a marginal Hudson ... so maybe.

Might be academic since there are a number of teams ahead of the Padres in the waivers pecking order and still in playoff contention ... and everyone needs RP.

What did it cost Boston to pick him up this winter?

Shame we didn't bring him back....

TB released (DFA) Renfroe last winter … he went unclaimed … elected FA … signed with Boston for $3.1MM (plus incentives).

Keep in mind after a poor 20019 with SD he had a very very bad 2020 with TB so I think every one is surprised by his season. Could it be something about playing for Boston that’s changed him?

He’s become a folk hero in Beantown in just one season.

No way they don’t resign him to a big contract.

Actually don’t have to sign him to a big contract … he is still in arbitration rules as I understand. Given his “career” which is the basis of the award (not only 2021 stats) the cost will not be that daunting … plus it buys Boston time to see if 2021 is an aberration.

Renfroe is 29 … and under arbitration control for a few more years … so Boston can get away with a lower cost year by year and an easy exit if he fails. Good deal for Boston … sometimes you get lucky.
